Rejected By My Mate, Now Mated To The Lycan King-Chapter 146
~ ROWAN
As soon as Nyssa left, I called for Jeremiah.
He was in my office within minutes and when I had finished informing him of my decision to return to Nyssa’s pack, he stared at me with wide eyes.
"Your Majesty," he began slowly, "Am I allowed to speak freely?"
Jeremiah had been my sentinel for years. I knew him since he was a twenty year old with far too much energy and not enough respect and discipline. I’d watched him become who he was and he was a damn good sentinel.
"Yes."
He exhaled deeply, fisting his hands tightly as if to calm himself before speaking. "Why would you want to return? It doesn’t make any sense."
"My mate needs to pack up her home," I said, keeping it deliberately vague.
"We can always ask for the home to be packed up and have the belongings sent to us. There is no need to go there, not when things are so tense. They are appointing a new Alpha soon. The ceremony will be over in two days. Now is not the time for us to risk any potential peace treaties by imposing."
"It will not be imposed, we will request entry as we do before going to any pack."
He frowned. "And if they refuse?"
I stayed silent because I had not thought that far.
As much as this was for Nyssa, I also wanted to get my hands on her parent’s files. There were more people in their team; more individuals who we did not get the chance to put away because we did not have the full files. If I could get it... I could end things once and for all.
"I will cross that bridge when I get to it."
He ran his hands through his hair with avid frustration, the muscles in his jaw ticking. "The council sent a letter, Your Majesty."
I frowned, my blood growing cold at his words. "I know that, believe me."
I had gone over that letter so many times that I could state it word for word. No one was as stressed as I was regarding that fucking letter, but this was equally important... if not more.
"Send out the request," I said simply, keeping my face carefully impassive. "That is your order."
Jeremiah nodded, bowing low as his eyes filled with resignation. "As you wish, Your Majesty."
He walked out of the room without another thought, shutting the door quietly behind him.
It was only when I was alone that I let out a breath. I leaned forward, opening the drawer next to me quietly. I grabbed the letter, the same one I’d read so many times and stared at the neat writing on it.
My phone rang at that exact moment and I cursed, reaching for it without glancing at the caller ID. "Hello?"
"The council, Rowan, really?" Aria hissed.
I cursed silently. I should have known that Nyssa would say something.
I thought I did a good enough job convincing her but clearly not considering my sister was now calling me, her voice laced with panic.
"I warned you about this, I told you it could happen. Fuck!" I heard movement in her background and I knew for certain that she was pacing.
"Relax," I began but clearly it was the wrong thing to say because she immediately turned on me.
"Relax? Are you fucking insane? Relax when the council is on your neck? Goddess above, Rowan, why didn’t you say something?"
"Because I knew you’d react like this."
"Of course I—" she stopped herself, exhaling deeply. "Tell me what the letter says."
I scoffed. "Not a chance."
"Rowan Henderson you better tell me right now or I swear, I will storm into that office and get the letter myself."
I raised a brow, my lips curling at her words. "You do realize that I am older, right? And I am the King."
"You might be the King but you’re still my brother," she shot back. "Letter now, or I’ll deploy your mate. You might refuse me, but you won’t refuse her, and I don’t think she would be as gentle as I am if she knew how serious a letter from the council was."
All humor bled out from me. "You wouldn’t."
She laughed. "Try me."
I knew Aria well enough to know that she was not bluffing. She truly believed I was in danger, and she would stop at nothing to make sure that she got me out of it.
With a sigh, I unfolded the note and began reading.
King Rowan,
We truly wish that we did not have our formal introduction like this.
It is our belief that every ruler be allowed to do as they please and rule their subjects with justice and wisdom.
However, the recent tension between your Kingdom and a certain pack has come to our attention. It has even come to the death of an Alpha.
We trust your wisdom and discretion in leading the Kingdom and it is our hope that no such incidents happen again.
Yours Truly,
The council.
When I was done, Aria was silent.
For a long minute, she did not speak. If I did not hear her breathing on the other end, I would have assumed that she hung up.
"That’s a threat," she said finally. "Do you realize that is a fucking—"
"I know what it is," I snapped. "I know what a threat looks like, I have sent out my fair share in the last century."
She went quiet, her voice instantly taking a softer tone. "What happens now?"
"Nothing. They have made their warning clear. All I have to do is stay the fuck out of trouble."
I could practically see her frowning on the other end of the phone as she spoke. "I don’t like this one bit."
"You’re not going to like it even more when you find out that I requested to enter Nyssa’s old pack." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
"Rowan!"
"She wants to go. You told me to listen to her."
"That was before I knew the council was on your back!" she hissed. "Look, we have to be very careful right now. You know how dangerous the council is."
"I do, trust me." I ran my hands through my hair with a sigh. "Just... keep this away from Nyssa for now. I’ll figure it out."
She sighed. "I hope you know what you’re doing."
I hung up.
I hope so too.
