Rejected By My Mate, Now Mated To The Lycan King-Chapter 151
~ NYSSA
I’d been in my parents room numerous times since they died, but somehow, it felt different this time.
Everything was as it was the day they died. I never got around to changing the sheets or moving their files, but I did try my best to make sure it remained clean while I was here. Unfortunately, I’d been gone too long and a light layer of dirt covered everything.
I exhaled deeply, trying to remember the exact scent of my mother’s perfume and the exact feel of my father’s beard whenever he hugged me but I couldn’t. It’d been so long and that memory was so far away.
"Are you okay?" Eric asked, stepping up to me. "If you need a moment—"
"I’m good, thanks," I said quickly, smoothing my hands down my dress. "Let’s just start looking."
We rummaged through every inch of the house; through the closet and the drawers. I even checked the little compartment by the bedside table where mum kept all the important family documents but there was nothing untowardly there. Everything was as I remembered it: pack stuff, and a few house papers.
The more I searched, the more frustrated I got.
There had to be something. All of the evidence that Rowan showed me would not exist if there wasn’t anything.
I threw down an envelope with a sigh. "For fucks sake."
"Maybe we should take a break?" Eric offered. "We’ve been at it for a while."
I pursed my lips in silence, running my hands through my hair. "We don’t have time to rest, Eric. We need to find the documents and get the fuck out of this pack. I don’t think Rowan would be very pleased to find out that he has to spend the night here."
Eric’s lips curled upwards slightly because he knew I was right. "Alright then, a snack maybe. Surely you have something in your kitchen."
"I don’t remember, but you can check. I’ll keep looking."
I turned away from him before he could say anything else and started searching the drawers all over again. Behind me, I felt Eric’s lingering gaze on the back of my neck but he decided against saying anything, choosing instead to quietly walk out of the room, shutting the door behind him.
He was gone for a few minutes and in those minutes, I finally allowed myself to sit on the bed, burying my head into my palms. There was nothing. I’d searched everywhere, every fucking inch of the room. Unless there was some hidden space underneath the tiles, there was nothing here.
The bedroom door opened and I sighed. "Did you find—Rowan?"
My mate walked into the room, hands shoved into his pockets as he made his way over to me. His eyes ran across the length of the room as he walked but his expression remained carefully blank.
"It looks like a hurricane went through here," he drawled slowly. "I take it you didn’t find anything."
I shook my head. "I hate to think that this whole thing was a fucking waste of time. We came all this way for nothing."
"I’m sure we’ll find something."
"Where?" I asked, throwing my hands up in defeat. "I have cleaned my own room numerous times to know that it isn’t there. Unless for some reason they kept it in the fucking kitchen."
I stormed to my feet, tugging at my hair as I tried to calm my breathing.
I should’ve been relieved. If there was nothing then it meant that I was their child, but it also meant that they were such cruel individuals and I had loved them... I still loved them.
"Tell me something else," I mumbled, running a hand over my mouth. "I don’t want to think about this right now."
Rowan’s eyes followed my movements. "What would you like to know?"
"How did your meeting with Ian go?"
He was silent for a moment. "He tried to threaten me into an alliance."
I went deathly still. I turned to him, eyes wide with surprise but Rowan wasn’t looking at me anymore. He was carefully picking up the papers I’d thrown on the ground, arranging them neatly on the table.
"You don’t just say shit like that and go quiet," I hissed. "What the fuck? How did he threaten you? Why?"
"It’s nothing to worry about. He will not be doing it again. He was in way over his head and I have reminded him of where he stands in the pecking order. Unfortunately, it also means that we are on limited time here. We need to leave tonight."’
And just like that, we were back on the subject of my parents.
I leaned against their bookshelf, resting my head against the cold wood while Rowan picked up my mess.
"I guess we’ll just have to accept that there’s nothing here," I murmured. "It was all for nothing."
"Perhaps not nothing," he said, locking eyes with me. "You’re in your home, you can take whatever you want. Something of your parents that you don’t want to lose. I don’t know that we can return after this."
I looked around the room. "I’ll probably sell the house so I’ll need the documents. Then perhaps I can take the books, my dad really loved them."
"Good. Get those and we can think about more things."
After arranging the house documents in a neat file, I began pulling the books off the shelf. Most of them were covered with dust so I made a mental note to clean them once we got back home...
Home
I did not know when Rowan’s palace began to feel like home but the word flowed so effortlessly.
I sighed, pulling another book but to my surprise, the book didn’t come off the shelf. I tugged again and this time, I heard a sharp creak.
My mouth fell open when a small layer of the shelf gave way, revealing a metal safe and a keypad.
"Well fuck," Rowan murmured from behind me.
