Rejected by the Campus Belle, I Find My True Love-Chapter 270 - 268: Since ancient times, daughter-in-laws and mothers-in-law have always been enemies
"What’s wrong? Did your dad scold you?"
"No."
Lin Xi sat next to Si Wen, looking utterly miserable and on the verge of tears.
"If not, then why do you look like you just got an earful?"
"My dad told me to come home tonight."
"Oh? And did you agree?"
Just then, Xue Yang came out of the kitchen with a plate of chicken. Hearing them, he said, "You’ve been living in the dorms for over half a month. It’s about time you went to see your dad."
"But..."
"Dinner’s ready. I’ll take you home after we eat."
Lin Xi’s lips stuck out in a pout.
"Xue Yang, how come you’re not taking me home?" Si Wen chimed in.
"Your family’s driver is already waiting downstairs, so there’s no need for me to. Gas is expensive, you know."
"I can tell him to leave right now. I’ll cover your gas money."
"In that case, you can find your own cab home tonight."
Si Wen glared at him. "You’d drop your friend for a girl in a heartbeat."
Xue Yang stuffed a large chicken drumstick into her mouth. "This ought to shut you up."
"MMPH, MMPH!" Si Wen struggled to take a bite. "This is huge! Are you trying to choke me to death?"
"With a mouth as big as yours, you’ll be fine."
"Oh, thanks a lot."
Xue Yang placed the other plate of chicken drumsticks, chicken feet, and wings in front of Lin Xi. "Here, eat up." His tone was a world apart from how he had just spoken to Si Wen.
Si Wen protested indignantly, "Hey, you said the drumsticks, feet, and wings were all for me!"
"You only said you wanted drumsticks, feet, and wings, not how many. Giving you all the parts from one chicken is already more than fair. Eat it or don’t. If you don’t want it, give it back."
Like a mother hen protecting her chicks, Si Wen immediately hugged the plate closer. "Hmph! What’s the big deal? This is plenty for me, anyway... and it’s delicious."
Xue Yang moved the plate closer to Lin Xi. "Xiao Xi, eat up before a certain someone finishes her portion and comes to steal yours," he said, shooting a pointed glance at Si Wen.
"Hmph, I don’t want it! I have enough here."
"That’s good."
"..."
Lin Xi picked up a chicken foot. It smelled delicious, but when she thought about having to leave Xue Yang soon, even the big drumstick lost its appeal.
"Xue Yang, why does this chicken taste even better than the last one we had?"
"My mom made these. Of course they’re better."
Xue Yang would confidently vouch for Madam Zhong’s cooking; most of his own culinary skills were inherited from her.
"Your mom is amazing! Her cooking must be superb." 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
"That’s right. My mom’s cooking is the best in our cluster of villages."
"When I came to find you last time, I should have met your mom and tasted her cooking."
"Better not. There were seven of you. If your group had suddenly barged into my house, it would have become a celebrated tale for miles around, one they’d talk about for years."
Showing off a little was one thing, but becoming the center of gossip was another matter entirely. In rural areas, keeping up with the Joneses was a serious business. Attracting too much attention could easily invite unnecessary trouble. Xue Yang just wanted his parents to live peacefully in the countryside until he had the means to bring them to the city.
With a drumstick in one hand and a chicken foot in the other, Si Wen said indistinctly, "That’s true. So, if just Lin Xi and I go another time, that should be fine, right?"
"Mrs. Zhong would be thrilled. And if only Xiao Xi went, she’d be even happier. My own status in the family might be in jeopardy."
Si Wen burst out laughing. "Xue Yang, you should really think before you brag."
"Am I lying?"
"Don’t you know? Daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law are the greatest enemies in the world. The conflict between them has been a major dilemma since ancient times. Tell me, if Xiao Xi met your mother, do you think they’d start fighting?"
"You’re projecting. Xiao Xi’s not a troublemaker like you."
"Then I guess she’d be the one to get wronged."
Xue Yang stared at Si Wen for a long moment before saying, "Si Wen, Xiao Xi was right. You really are a bad person. Xiao Xi, don’t listen to her. My mom is very easy to get along with. If she met you, I’m sure you two would get along wonderfully."
Si Wen just huffed and refused to acknowledge him.
"Xue Yang, is that true? Would your mom really like me?"
"Of course. My mom has always dreamed of having a daughter. If she saw you, she would definitely treat you like one of her own."
Lin Xi’s mood brightened a little, and she even started to feel a little eager to meet Xue Yang’s mother.
Just then, Xue Yang said, "Xiao Xi, your dad really misses you."
Lin Xi lowered her head and took a bite from a large drumstick. "I know. I’ll go home... just let me stay a little while longer, okay?"
"Alright."
Not long after dinner, Si Wen made an excuse and said she had to go home. Xue Yang and Lin Xi walked her downstairs together.
"Alright, you don’t have to walk me out. I’m heading home now."
"We weren’t only walking you out." Xue Yang took Lin Xi’s hand and led her toward the sidewalk.
"Tch." Si Wen scoffed, then turned and climbed into a nearby Rolls-Royce. The driver rolled down the window, gave Xue Yang and Lin Xi a slight nod, and rolled it back up. The car pulled away slowly, merging into traffic.
The traffic on this road had increased since the Lunar New Year. Xue Yang and Lin Xi walked hand in hand along the sidewalk. Though the rain had stopped, some pedestrians still carried open umbrellas. Water dripped from the trees lining the road from time to time. Xue Yang stopped and helped Lin Xi pull up the hood of her pink windbreaker, which she wore over her school uniform.
They stood under a streetlight, the glow stretching their shadows long behind them. It was a scene straight out of a movie, and passersby couldn’t help but turn their heads to watch.
"You still owe me those black stockings."
"Pfft!" Lin Xi was so amused by his deadpan expression that she burst out laughing. "Who even brings that up at a time like this?"
Xue Yang held up two fingers. "Adding this time, you owe me twice."
He raised a third finger. "And when you come back next, that’ll make it a nice, even three times."
Lin Xi cupped his three outstretched fingers in her hands. "I promise. The next time I come back, I’ll definitely wear them for you."
"They have to be three different types."
"Fine."
"Can I specify the patterns?"
"You can."
"And the colors?"
"Mhm."
"Then... can I specify the poses?"
Give him an inch, and he’ll take a mile.
"Xue Yang!" Lin Xi bit down on his three fingers.
Pain shot through him, and he winced but didn’t cry out. Lin Xi bit down until her own jaw ached before she finally let go.
Xue Yang stared at the neat set of teeth marks on his hand, where a fine, glistening thread of saliva was still visible.
His gaze darkened.
"Does it hurt?"
Xue Yang snapped back to his senses. "Doesn’t hurt at all. You’ve got some strong teeth."
