Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Losing All Face

She could show such unreserved concern for a complete stranger, yet she treated him—her own husband—like a distant acquaintance. It was obvious just how much she loathed him.

At this thought, an indescribable frustration welled up inside Leona Grant.

He tugged irritably at his tie, a shadow falling over his features. "Why should I care about her? Who does she think she is?"

Vivian Yates glanced at his obviously dark expression, and the coldness in her eyes intensified.

’Even though he still acts like he doesn’t care about Annabelle Linton, just like before, he was never like this in the past!’

’In the past, he wouldn’t have even deigned to spare her a facial expression or a sideways glance. His gaze was always completely indifferent. So why is he displeased now?’

’Is it because she’s being cold to him?’

Vivian Yates gritted her teeth, a sinister glint flashing in her eyes.

"But Annabelle is my best friend," Vivian Yates said, her gaze lowered, looking as if she were about to burst into tears. "I don’t want her to misunderstand me, and I certainly don’t want her to hate me..."

Leona Grant pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, ignoring her impending tears.

"She won’t," Leona Grant said, his gaze sweeping over to her. He offered a placating murmur, but his expression was somewhat dismissive. "Don’t worry. She won’t hate you. Things will get better after some time passes."

He pulled his silent phone from his pocket, glanced at the screen, and then said flatly, "I have work to get back to at the office. I’ll take you home first."

"Okay." Vivian Yates gave a faint smile. She watched as he turned back, staring for a moment at the spot where Annabelle Linton had disappeared, a calculating light flickering in her eyes.

’Well played, Annabelle Linton!’

Leona Grant dejectedly pulled his gaze away.

’Strange. Why did I feel a sharp pang in my chest when I saw the coldness in her eyes?’

...

Across the street, inside a luxurious black sedan, a handsome man watched the direction Annabelle Linton had gone, the corners of his lips curling into a seductive arc. "So that’s Annabelle Linton?"

"Yes, President Lynch," the assistant in the driver’s seat replied. He then added, somewhat hesitantly, "Sir, my recent investigation shows she’s been getting heavily involved in the Linton Group acquisition. It’s not just a casual inquiry. Also, William Chapman doesn’t know about this. Should we inform him?"

Hearing this, Chase Lynch’s eyes narrowed slightly. A heart-stopping smile played on his lips. "It doesn’t matter who we partner with. Our priority is acquiring the Linton Group."

The assistant nodded, realization dawning on him.

Chase Lynch lounged against the back seat, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "Besides, our counterpart is quite the beauty. This just got interesting."

...

The next day was when Leona Grant’s parents were due to return.

Annabelle Linton had specifically taken two days off for their welcome-home reception.

They were scheduled to go to the family estate that afternoon. Leona Grant had told her to go with him.

Annabelle Linton took great care in getting ready.

She applied light makeup and let her hair fall gently over her shoulders. She changed into a stylish white blouse and a pale pink pencil skirt. The outfit was mature yet graceful, simple and elegant without sacrificing an air of nobility.

’If I remember correctly, Vivian Yates will be there today, too.’

’Leona Grant’s mother and Vivian Yates’s mother were the best of friends, and since Vivian had grown up with Leona, his mother had an inexpressible fondness for her.’

’Normally, at a welcome-home reception, the people returning from abroad are the ones who bring gifts. But Vivian’s emotional intelligence was on another level; to win over Leona Grant’s parents, she had actually gone to the trouble of preparing gifts for them.’

’In my past life, I listened to Vivian Yates’s advice, wore an ostentatious dress to show off my status, and went to see Leona Grant’s parents empty-handed. I completely humiliated myself.’
