Remarriage Failed Again Today-Chapter 62: The Sheer Cunning
She walked past Vivian Yates as if she hadn’t even seen her and went straight downstairs.
Patrick Grant painted, completely absorbed.
Just like that, Vivian Yates was ignored by everyone.
The Grant Family’s coldness was unexpected, and it embarrassed her.
Her face darkened instantly.
’She was absolutely furious,’ but Vivian Yates didn’t let it show. She casually walked over, smiled, and said, "I heard you praising Annabelle, Aunty. Annabelle really is quite wonderful."
Roxanne Jennings’s interest was piqued. "Oh?"
Vivian Yates said sweetly, "Aunty, you might not know this, but in high school, Annabelle wasn’t just a top student, she was the school beauty. Eight out of every ten boys in the school had a crush on her.
And Annabelle is very independent. She never took a penny from her family and worked part-time to support herself through school. She earned all her own money for tuition and living expenses."
"She was earning her own living expenses back in high school?" Roxanne Jennings asked, puzzled. "What kind of part-time jobs did she do?"
"Um... I think she often worked as a jewelry sales associate, a phone promoter, a restaurant waitress, a bar waitress... things like that..."
As soon as she finished speaking, Vivian Yates nonchalantly clapped a hand over her mouth, as if she had let something slip.
Though it was obviously a deliberate act, coming from someone with such a pure and innocent image, it made her seem naive and guileless. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
At this, the smile on Roxanne Jennings’s face faded, and a trace of contempt flashed in her eyes.
’Does the Young Madam of the Grant Family need money that badly? The other jobs are one thing, but a bar waitress...’
’That kind of place is full of shady characters. Why would a girl from a good family go there?’
Vivian Yates watched Roxanne Jennings’s expression, and the corner of her mouth curved into a sinister smirk.
This was exactly the effect she wanted. She continued to fan the flames, "Actually, Aunty, you don’t need to worry about it. Annabelle was just selling alcohol; she didn’t do anything else..."
Upon hearing this, Roxanne Jennings’s expression grew even darker.
"Miss Yates is right."
Annabelle Linton had come upstairs at some point with a tray of freshly brewed tea, seemingly unaffected by Vivian Yates’s words.
She set down the tray, placed the cups of tea before the elders, and said with a smile, "The Linton Family and the Grant Family may both be wealthy, but that money isn’t mine. It’s true that I worked part-time jobs all through high school. That’s because I wanted to support myself with my own two hands. In this world, nothing is certain. The only way to guarantee you won’t starve is to rely on yourself. I have never been ashamed of having worked part-time, nor do I feel that doing so lowered my status."
Leona Grant was rounding the corner of the rooftop stairwell when she heard Annabelle Linton’s words and stopped in her tracks.
Annabelle Linton spoke with a faint smile on her face. Her voice was lovely and gentle; even as she refuted the claims, she made others feel at ease.
When Roxanne Jennings heard this, her expression brightened considerably.
’That’s right. A person has to rely on themself. She admired this kind of self-reliant person.’
"Wouldn’t you agree, Miss Yates?" Annabelle Linton asked, looking at her calmly.
’Saying that eight out of ten boys liked me was to imply that I was loose.’
’Saying I worked as a bar waitress was to imply my lifestyle was indecent.’
’The nerve of her!’
Annabelle Linton suddenly remembered. In her past life, a seemingly casual remark just like this one from Vivian Yates was what made Mrs. Grant, who was already dissatisfied with her, turn on her completely.
Back then, an enraged Mrs. Grant had directly mocked her, saying a pheasant could never become a phoenix and that she was unworthy of Leona Grant.
She had burst into aggrieved tears, looking utterly helpless, which only made the strong-willed Mrs. Grant despise her more. If Grandpa hadn’t stepped in, the situation would have escalated to the point of divorce!
