Chapter 170: The beauty of second chances

A few months later...

Once again, despite being very sleepy and tired, Valerie went to the bathroom. She returned to bed and saw her husband, still asleep with his bare chest exposed. She sat next to him, leaned back, and touched her large belly that wasn’t covered by any fabric since she was only wearing a green crop tank top and green shorts.

"Why is my stomach always hurt? Could it be that I’m about to give birth?" she wondered, remembering that her due date was very close.

"Ughh..." She started feeling uncomfortable, took a deep breath, and exhaled slowly. The pain was intense, making her feel relieved when she rested her head on the headboard.

Damian noticed Valerie’s movement and glanced at her.

"Why aren’t you sleeping?" he asked lazily.

"I don’t know, I’ve been to the bathroom five times," Valerie replied anxiously, biting her lower lip as she felt another wave of pain. "And I always feel heartburn... It’s like contractions..."

"Really?"

Damian reached out his hand, held Valerie’s belly, and caressed it, hoping to feel movement but felt nothing.

"He usually moves when I touch him," he said lazily, still sleepy.

"He hasn’t moved since earlier."

"Really?" Damian panicked, immediately sitting up and looking at Valerie in astonishment. "Why didn’t you tell me earlier? What if our baby is in trouble?" He wondered, then quickly grabbed his phone from the nightstand.

Valerie stayed silent, watching Damian anxiously call the doctor. Slowly, she felt the pain again until something very wet emerged from below.

"Damian..."

"What?"

"I think the baby is coming," Valerie said with a fearful look. "I think my water broke!"

Damian clenched his teeth, then focused back on the call.

"Doc, her water broke!"

"Okay, don’t panic, help her change clothes, and bring her to the hospital. I’ll handle it right away," the doctor said over the phone.

"Okay!" Damian quickly ended the call and turned to look at Valerie, who seemed to be in pain, leaving him stunned and unsure of what to do.

"What? What did the doctor say?" Valerie asked uncomfortably.

"Um..." Damian suddenly became nervous. "We... we need to go to the hospital now!" He quickly got out of bed.

He helped Valerie get out of bed and guided her to the wardrobe room, changing her into a blue dress and several pairs of underwear in case of more fluid.

He also put on a white t-shirt and gray shorts, then grabbed the car keys and his wallet.

"Let Jimmy and the others prepare our stuff; the important thing now is to get to the hospital," he said, guiding his wife out of the room.

Valerie walked slowly, holding back the pain that made her legs very weak. She and her husband stopped at the door, seeing how quiet it was since it was still 2:00 AM.

"You’ll be fine, trust me," Damian whispered, kissing Valerie’s temple. "Oh, wait, I’ll call my mom," he continued, stopping to get his phone from his pocket.

"Please don’t!" Valerie exclaimed.

Damian frowned. "Why?"

"Don’t tell anyone that I’m about to give birth," Valerie explained, then continued walking while holding onto the staircase railing. "We’ll tell them when our baby is born," she continued.

"Honey, but..."

"Please, I don’t want to worry them," Valerie said again, ignoring Damian still behind her. "I need to get to the hospital soon, this is uncomfortable... I’m in pain!"

Frustrated and confused, Damian followed Valerie. He let his wife wait in the yard while he got the car from the garage, then asked the security guard to open the gate and instructed him not to tell anyone that they were going to the hospital.

...

It took about 20 minutes before they finally arrived at the hospital. Valerie immediately received care, and the doctor guided her to help deliver the baby soon.

At that moment, only Damian accompanied her, seeing her in pain and struggling until she finally gave birth to their second son. Everything seemed smooth, and the medical team moved Valerie to a spacious recovery room complete with necessary furniture like a sofa, wardrobe, chair, baby cot, table, and more.

Damian stood watching Valerie, who was focused on breastfeeding their baby, dressed in a small light blue outfit with a cap, slightly revealing his naturally black hair. In silence, he remembered how he had hurt this woman but now felt immense happiness from her, making him feel unworthy of this.

"Don’t you want to be with him?" Valerie asked.

Awkwardly, Damian nodded.

"Come here, sit next to me," Valerie requested. "But take off your shirt first so you can do skin-to-skin with him," she added.

With hesitation, Damian took off his shirt, then got on the bed and leaned back next to Valerie, allowing her to place the baby on his chest gently, stomach down.

"Hold his back carefully," Valerie whispered.

Damian stayed silent, his hands trembling as he embraced his tiny son, slowly inhaling the fresh baby scent, and looked at his handsome face and hazel blue eyes, his cute lips, and perfectly shaped nose. Everything was perfect, making him feel awe once more.

"He will like you," Valerie said, lying back against Damian with their baby. "Isn’t he so handsome? He’s much bigger than Daniel when he was born," she continued.

Damian remained silent, gazing at the baby with a mix of emotion and sadness.

"I’m happy now, your kindness allows me to enjoy moments like this," he said, stroking his baby’s cheek with his thumb. "But I’ll never stop feeling guilty for Daniel... Because of my mistakes, he never experienced a moment like this..."

"Forget about that, stop regretting, because now you need to move forward, showing that you can be a good father to him, and to his little brother," Valerie replied calmly.

"Yes... Of course..." Damian smiled, then turned to Valerie. "You are the best... Thank you for giving me two sons..."

Valerie laughed. "This isn’t just for you, but also for me. Two sons will punish you if you dare mess with me!"

Damian grinned immediately, then shook his head. "That will never happen..."

"Promise?"

"Yes... I promise!"

"In that case, I’ll also try to make you never want to hurt me. I’ll be a good wife and mother," Valerie said, then quickly kissed Damian’s lips softly. "I love you!"

"I love you," Damian whispered, kissing Valerie’s lips again until his attention returned to their baby, who made a little sound but then fell asleep.

"Give him a name," Valerie asked.

Damian paused, staring at the baby as if thinking of a suitable name.

"What about Alexander?" Valerie suggested.

"No..." Damian shook his head. "He will have the name Dominic, meaning from God... Then Brian, meaning strong."

Valerie smiled, looking at their baby, imagining he would grow up to be a handsome bachelor like his father, and certainly strong.

"My son..." Damian sighed. "You are Dominic Brian McCourtney... God’s strong gift to the McCourtney family..."

"That’s a great name!" Valerie said enthusiastically.

Damian smiled, then kissed baby Dominic’s forehead. "Dominic Brian McCourtney, may God bless you, I love you," he said with teary eyes, embracing his baby, and letting him rest his head on his chest.

Valerie’s smile faded as she watched Damian close his eyes tears streaming down.

"Don’t cry," she said, gently wiping her husband’s tears.

Damian opened his eyes again and smiled shyly.

"This is our happy day," Valerie said, then hugged their baby along with Damian. "Don’t show your sadness... Don’t always remember the bad things from the past... All of that is over."

"I’m trying... I just feel unworthy of all this," Damian replied, his face downcast. "I gave him a name... This is my first, best experience..."

"Of course you’re worthy... Who else deserves me? Would you let me be with another man?" Valerie asked with a pout.

Damian shook his head, looking at Valerie with hope.

"Would you turn away if one day you got bored of me and found a better man?" he asked, suddenly afraid of losing her.

Valerie sighed, focusing on Damian.

"No one is worthy of being with me except you... And there will never be any boredom in my heart towards you... What we have been through has proven that no matter what happens, it will not diminish my love for you," she said with conviction. "You cheated, you were abusive, you lied... I still accepted it. That’s because of love... But that doesn’t mean you can repeat it... I won’t accept it if you do that to me again," she continued firmly.

"No, I won’t do it again," Damian replied, shaking his head. "You are the best... There’s no one I want but you," he added.

"That’s good!"

Valerie quickly kissed Damian’s lips, then looked back at their baby until suddenly surprised by the door opening.

"What?" Elena was surprised to see Damian and Valerie already with the baby. She quickly closed the door and approached them, carrying her bag. "Are you kidding me? Oh my God..."

Valerie chuckled, seeing her mother-in-law’s shock.

"It’s your baby... Oh my..." Elena was still surprised, looking at the baby more closely. "I thought you were still going to give birth, but..."

"He’s here," said Damian, glancing at his baby. "His mother could push him out faster... So you don’t need to worry," he continued, turning to his mother again.

Elena sighed, watching Valerie sit back down before approaching and hugging her.

"Thank you, you are truly amazing!" she said softly.

Valerie remained silent until Elena released her hug. She let her mother-in-law hold the baby while Damian didn’t move from the bed but lay there holding her.

"You shouldn’t want to get too intimate with me," she whispered, looking at her husband’s face so close to hers.

"Why?"

"Because it will arouse you..."

the beauty of second chances

Damian frowned, looking at Valerie seriously.

"No sex for a month or more," Valerie explained.

"Really?" Damian immediately panicked.

Valerie just chuckled, guessing her husband would be sad because he had to hold back his desire for quite a while.

"You have to control yourself, don’t take out your passion on other women," she said with a smile that slowly faded, remembering her husband’s previous indiscretions.

"No, I won’t do that..." Damian shook his head and then kissed Valerie’s forehead. "I will patiently wait, this all happened because you gave birth to a son for me..."

Valerie just smiled, then rested her head on Damian’s chest, occasionally glancing at Elena who was happily cradling the baby, feeling so happy and fortunate to have been able to control her emotions and forgive Damian, understanding that second chances sometimes bring more genuine happiness.
