Chapter 75: Valerie was surprised

Several days passed...

Early in the morning, Valerie woke up and let Hannah or Daniel continue sleeping because it was the weekend, so there was no need to get ready for daycare. She poured various ingredients into a special container, then placed it under the mixer and turned it on.

Ding ...

The sound of the doorbell diverted her attention, so she quickly turned off the mixer.

"Who’s coming so early?" she said as she walked towards the front door and opened it.

"Jerry," she greeted, seeing Jerry with his wife, Gea. "Gea..."

She quickly approached Gea and hugged her, then invited them in with Jerry.

"I know why you’ve come, and honestly, I didn’t expect it," Valerie said anxiously, seeing Jerry and Gea sit on the sofa. "Damian shouldn’t have pressured you into this because I know you were already intent on helping your father with his business," she continued as she sat down.

"It’s Okay, besides, this won’t last forever," Jerry replied calmly. "I’m glad to help you... I feel challenged to find out who’s trying to kidnap Daniel. And is it Mr. McCourtney’s doing?"

"And what we’re doing here will also make me happy," Gea said, looking beautiful in her dark green dress, with her hair left loose. "Maybe we can spend more time together, and I’ll also experience a new atmosphere because I’m bored in Las Vegas," she added cheerfully.

Valerie sighed. "I don’t know what else to say... I’m glad you’re here, but it shouldn’t be to be my guards..."

"It’s Okay, besides, this isn’t something for free. We get a lot of money," Jerry chuckled. "Who wouldn’t want a lot of money, huh? I can use it for our baby’s birth preparations," he continued, glancing at Gea who blushed immediately.

Valerie frowned. "Baby, does that mean she’s pregnant?"

"Yes..."

"Oh my..." She immediately covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide in surprise.

Jerry just smiled.

Quickly, Valerie approached Gea and hugged her. "Congratulations... you’re going to be a mother!"

"Thank you." Gea smiled warmly.

Valerie let go of her hug, looking at Gea with teary eyes, touched by their happy news.

"The presence of a baby in the family will bring joy, and may God always bless you," she said.

Gea smiled and nodded.

"You must be feeling nauseous and dizzy often now, I’ll make you some warm tea... And it goes well with croissants!" Valerie exclaimed enthusiastically. "Luckily, I’m making it right now... But if you can’t wait too long, I’ll ask my mom’s store worker to deliver croissants here," she continued, now taking her phone out of her dusty grey pants pocket.

Gea stopped Valerie from making the call. "You don’t have to do that. We won’t stay here long," she said.

"What?" Valerie was surprised.

"I have to go back to our new house because I want to rest. Jerry will come back later," Gea explained.

"I thought you were going to stay here!" Valerie pouted.

"We’re staying next to your house."

"Really?" Valerie was surprised, instantly remembering that the right side of her house was already occupied, so it was highly unlikely for Jerry and Gea to stay there.

"The homeowner just vacated that house, and we’re going there now," Jerry said as he stood up.

"Wait wait..." Valerie looked at them in astonishment. "So, the homeowner left? Did they leave so you could stay there? Does that mean you could be close to me and make it easier for you to take care of me without leaving your pregnant wife?"

"I don’t know about that..." Jerry shrugged. "All we know is, Damian’s mother contacted us and asked us to stay in that house starting today. We didn’t even know that the house had just been vacated by its owner."

Valerie fell silent, thinking that Damian’s mother did this intentionally for her safety with Daniel.

’Oh God... They’re treating me overly... They must have spent a lot of money on this,’ she thought anxiously.

"We should go now. We want to rest," Jerry said, interrupting Valerie’s thoughts.

Valerie nodded and escorted them to the porch. She watched them walk towards the house on the right side of hers, about 50 meters away.

"Who are they?"

A voice from the left side caught her attention. Valerie saw Tristan approaching her in sportswear, carrying a ball.

"They... um..." Valerie suddenly felt nervous. ’Should I tell him the truth that he doesn’t need to take care of me anymore? Will it offend him or make him feel untrustworthy and unreliable? It’s also impossible for me to say that Jerry was sent by Damian to take care of me because until now no one should know that I still have a relationship with Damian!’ she wondered.

"Hey..." Tristan noticed Valerie’s gaze.

"They... They’re my friends," Valerie said. "They will stay in that house and... And maybe he will often pick up and take Daniel for daycare," she continued nervously, thinking of a plausible reason without involving Damian in her explanation.

Tristan furrowed his brow, playing with his lips as if thinking.

"That... That’s because of Daniel’s grandmother’s order," Valerie explained again. "I told her about the incident when he was almost kidnapped... Eventually, she panicked and ended up paying my friend to be our guardian," she continued cautiously.

"So, I’m no longer needed..." Tristan smiled faintly.

Valerie nodded. "Besides, you also need to focus on your duties. I don’t want to inconvenience you," she said.

"It’s Okay... But I hope you’ll still allow me to come often... I like playing with Daniel," Tristan said calmly, then lifted the ball in his hand. "I want to play ball with him," he continued with a cheerful expression.

"Um, okay... But you have to wait because he hasn’t woken up yet."

"Okay..."

"You can wait inside; I’ll continue making croissants," Valerie said, then walked into the house.

"I’ll see, maybe I’ll be interested in learning how to make them," Tristan replied, still following Valerie.

Valerie let Tristan follow her until they reached the kitchen. She continued making the dough while occasionally responding to Tristan, who kept talking, but she couldn’t stop thinking about Damian.

’I hope he won’t be angry when he finds out that Tristan and I are friends, and he often comes,’ she thought, but suddenly she felt her phone vibrating, so she picked it up and saw several messages from an Instagram account named m_quinn.

"What’s wrong?" Tristan, who was sitting at the table, leaned his hand on the pantry table and asked.

"I don’t know, these are messages from an account I don’t recognize," Valerie replied, immediately opening the messages, and they turned out to be picture messages.

She immediately furrowed her brow, her heart pounding as she looked at each picture message, showing Demian and Clara’s closeness in a hallway of a building, near a car, even in an elevator and a room. Instantly, her chest felt tight, her legs weak, and her mind drifted to the past when she caught them naked in a room.

"No..." She sat down immediately, her trembling hands placing her phone on the table.

"What’s wrong?" Tristan asked, standing up and approaching Valerie.

Valerie swallowed her saliva, her gaze empty, her mind still fixated on her phone, vividly recalling those photos. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably, unable to contain her sorrow as memories of her struggles over the past two years flooded back.

’How could he do this? Does this mean he’s still involved with her all this time? He... He’s still a liar!’ she screamed inwardly, clenching her fists, haunted by regret for taking Damian back.

Tristan took Valerie’s phone and looked at the photos. ’He’s with another girl? Does Karina know about this? Is this part of her scheme to distance Damian and Valerie? But what if she doesn’t know about this? What if this is evidence that Damian is indeed a jerk?’ he wondered until his attention was diverted to Valerie, who was crying while clutching her chest as if in pain.

"Stupid... I’m so stupid!"

"Who’s that guy?" Tristan asked, pretending not to know about Demian.

"He’s just a slut... and that girl too," wiping her tears.

"Do you know them all?"

"They’re traitors!" Valerie snatched her phone from Tristan, and then immediately blocked that account without deleting the messages. ’I’ll show this to Damian again... And it’ll be the reason I’ll never accept him again... Never... Never accept him again!’

"Valerie..." Tristan was puzzled, seeing Valerie stand up abruptly.

"I think you should leave now. I want to wake up Daniel and take him to my friend’s house," Valerie requested as she walked away from the kitchen.

"Why? Is there a big problem after these photos? Can you explain it to me so I can help you?" Tristan asked as he followed Valerie.

She didn’t respond until he grabbed her hand and made her turn to him.

"Please, don’t make me curious!" Tristan pleaded.

Valerie pulled her hand away. "I don’t want to involve you in my suffering... And I don’t want to dwell on all of this... I don’t want this issue to escalate, to be known by many people... Including you!" she said sharply.

Tristan immediately distanced himself from Valerie. "It’s your right not to tell me your problems, but seeing you like this, turning 180 degrees from being so calm to crying, I won’t stay silent. Now I feel involved... And I will find out soon without you explaining it to me... You should remember who I am and what I’m capable of," he said, then left immediately.

Valerie sighed, letting Tristan go, but the images of Damian and Clara returned to haunt her until she ran to her room, crying. She hugged Daniel tightly, who had woken up and was sitting in the middle of the bed.

"My son!"

She hugged her son tightly, imagining how happy he was with his father, only to find out that his father never stopped being a jerk.

’I don’t know what to say, one day you’ll be disappointed because I won’t be able to be with your father anymore... He never changes!’ she thought amidst tears.
