Chapter 131: A Threat

A week later,

The past week has not been the best for Mr. De Rossi.

After getting shot and nearly losing his life in Eva’s hands, he’d not been able to move from his hospital bed at all.

This was not his first time being shot, but his body was getting old and withering away, so gunshot injuries took more time to heal than usual.

However, after paying the doctor a huge sum of money, he was finally discharged and would continue treatment at home.

Right now, he had somewhere important to be.

He got out of his car, hissing for the nth time that day in pain.

He stared at the building. It was the Unity Tower but he wasn’t going to his new office. He was headed to the president’s office.

Unlike many countries where the president’s office was a separate, secluded compound, William had chosen a different arrangement. His office sat among the other government ministries, a decision that had caused several raised eyebrows.

Mr. De Rossi gave a knock at the door that spelled out President perfectly written on the sign attached to the door.

When he heard the confirmatory reply from inside, he walked in.

"Why do you look so pale, Marcus? I heard you were shot and have been in the hospital for the past week," William, the president of Solvarra asked. His hair was completely white, a chiseled body for a man in his late sixties.

"Since you know, why bother asking why I’m pale?" Marcus questioned back, settling himself on the seat, but the movement got him grimacing in pain once again.

William noticed this and couldn’t help but chuckle.

"Who would have thought that your enemies are finally so close to getting to you now," he said with a smirk on his lips. Then that smirk instantly faltered as he pushed his files away and stared at Mr. De Rossi dead in the eyes. "Why are you here?"

Mr. De Rossi only needed three more years before he could join the presidential campaign for a new president. William’s term would end in those three years but he could still join the election and win it if he wanted to, which was the last thing Mr. De Rossi wanted.

Three years were still too long for him and with Eva alive, he might not be able to make it that long.

Only at the first encounter, and she almost killed him, despite trying to blackmail her by telling her he knew where her sister was. But it had backfired so badly.

"Let me guess why you’re here, Marcus," William interrupted before he could open his mouth to speak. "You are either here to warn me or to kill me just like you did with Jaime Lorenzo."

"I wouldn’t kill you," Mr. De Rossi lied. "I wouldn’t think about doing that at all. I actually came here to remind you of our past transactions. May I start with your brother who died years ago?"

William’s face turned grim, the wrinkles on his face turning darker as he tried to contain his rage.

"I mean, everyone suddenly thinks that I’m a killer but what they refuse to understand is that I’m not the only one in this. One day, people might suspect that I’m the one who killed your brother, Zion, and they would never suspect that you’re the one who instructed me to do t—"

Mr. De Rossi’s words were cut short when William suddenly banged his fist on the table, making him flinch.

"So what have you come here to do? To blackmail me? We had a deal, Marcus, that you would keep your mouth shut!" He yelled as he glowered at the other man sitting opposite him.

"Indeed, we did," Mr. De Rossi nodded in understanding. "But that deal expired years ago, don’t you think? You didn’t even help me with the previous election as I expected you to, and I had to stain my hands with blood once again. Well, it was Dante’s hands but still, hands were stained," he smirked so hard that William wanted to wipe them off his face with a punch.

William hissed in regret. He should have known better. In the political world, no one was completely innocent.

Everyone has done what had to be done just to get what they wanted. That was how it was.

William had been jealous of his older brother, Zion, who was the former president. He was cherished by their father so much but once the old man died by never waking up from his sleep, William decided to do the same for his brother.

Zion trusted him, so he used that against him. He asked Marcus for help, and the latter agreed to help but with a price to always help him climb up the ladder in the political world. And now, he was being threatened by that same person.

"What do you want?" William asked through gritted teeth.

Mr. De Rossi hummed, pretending to think about what he wanted. "I want to be the president of Solvarra." 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Now, it was William who turned pale.

"I want to be the president of Solvarra in the next election, but that’s too far away," he continued, ignoring how pale William looked at the moment. "So come up with something. I’m giving you only six months. You can go ahead and fake being sick and can’t continue your tenure or just disappear for all I care. You’re smart, I’m sure you can think of something. And if you don’t do anything by then, the whole country is going to know how you mercilessly had your very own brother killed all because of your greed."

Mr. De Rossi didn’t wait for William’s response. He simply stood up from his seat carefully and headed towards the door.

But then, he halted.

"If you think you can outsmart me...." he drawled, turning to face William. "I heard some of your children are married and expecting. I’m sure you wouldn’t want any harm coming to them." Then he closed the door right behind him.
