Revive Rome: Wait! Why not make the empress fall in love with me first?-Chapter 281 - 79: The Mutant Arrives
Chapter 281: Chapter 79: The Mutant Arrives
The envoy team left Beg Village, and The Azure Longsword Mercenary Corps also had an additional pile of luggage—all handcrafted food that was convenient to carry, made by Hood’s wife Maria, such as air-dried sausages, smoked meat, and beer, etc.
Everyone continued to head south along the Isar River at an extremely slow pace.
On one hand, because of the many necessities for eating, dressing, living, and traveling for so many people, and the absence of cars for transportation, their pace could not increase.
On the other hand, the envoy team itself was not in a great hurry; they advanced cautiously during the day and started camping on the spot once night fell, giving the impression that they were deliberately vigilant of something.
It took nearly a week for the envoy team to finally enter the Ahnaus Mountain Area. That evening, as the sun was on the brink of setting, the attendants again unabashedly refused to go any further, claiming that it was easy to encounter attacks from extraordinary creatures in the mountains at night, demanding to set up camp and arrange sentry posts, and to wait until it was light the next day.
Viscount Heinrich reluctantly agreed to the knight squires’ request for rest after communicating with Squad Leader Aske.
Miel had already returned from hunting with Eleanor and Sigrdrifa. With her super long-range sniper rifle and a vision enhanced by her extraordinary ability, Miel was practically the best hunter in the mountains, while the power armor of Eleanor and Sigrdrifa gave them the strength to drag large game.
Several deer, a few wild boars, and even a bear were half-dragged, half-carried back by them.
The guards of the Weisbach family skillfully took over the game, gutted the animals and extracted their innards, then skewered the meat on racks to roast, while the innards were thrown into a large pot to boil out the blood, after which salt and wine were added for seasoning.
Soon, the aromatic scent of roasting spread; the golden fat in the meat surged out from the charred tender skin under the high temperature, dripping into the fire below, making a sizzling sound.
Mia weaved between several barbecue grills, brushing layers of pepper and salt mixture onto the grilling meat as directed by Aske.
Across from them, the knight squires of the Wolf envoy team couldn’t help but swallow their saliva, smelling the tempting aroma that wafted over.
Although they were traveling in the same team, they ate their own dry food separately. The Azure Longsword and the Weisbach guards shared a meal, while the servants of the Wolf family were responsible for preparing Viscount Heinrich’s dinner and, in theory, were to supply the knight squires with food as well.
However, these knight squires had been on edge for a long time; how could they dare to eat food prepared by strangers? What if someone had poisoned it?
So, they could only swallow their saliva, smelling the aroma of roasted meat from The Azure Longsword and the scent of food being cooked by Viscount Heinrich, while silently nibbling on their dry rations.
Nora skillfully cut off strips of roasted meat with a small knife, distributing it to the squad leader, the ladies, and the guards, and she couldn’t resist biting into a piece to taste it herself.
Not bad, although there was a hint of gaminess that hadn’t been fully removed, under Aske’s personally prepared seasoning, it took on a unique natural flavor.
She ate, squinting slightly, when suddenly she heard a voice behind her:
"Miss Nora?"
Nora immediately turned around vigilantly and saw that the person approaching was the black-robed sorcerer Adams, who had tried to disrupt the knight fighting event by using sequence abilities.
"What do you want?" she asked quietly as she took a half step back, clutching the dining knife in her hand, only to be astonished to discover that Eleanor and Sigrdrifa by her side had no reaction and were simply leaning against their power armor, continuing to eat.
"Don’t worry, I mean no harm," the black-robed Adams raised both hands to show he had no weapons, then tentatively said, "We haven’t seen each other for days, have you advanced to ’Mind II’?"
"And me," Medea walked over, saying disdainfully, "’Mind Blind Zone,’ was that little trick necessary?"
"Heh, I certainly don’t want to expose my arrival," black-robed Adams said with a cold laugh, "Who knows if among my ’companions’ there is a dark hand planning to slice my throat with a knife in the night. Besides, are your companions really trustworthy?"
"Our companion definitely has no problem," Nora said angrily.
"Let’s hope you can still say that with such conviction a few years from now," the black-robed Adams said disdainfully, "The so-called path of the Extraordinary is a lonely road in pursuit of power. Apart from yourself, there is no one you can trust, because they may at any time scheme for the Extraordinary Traits within you."
"I assume you have not come to offer us the wisdom of an elder, Mr. Adams?" Medea interrupted.
"Of course, I am here to seek cooperation."
"Cooperation?"
"For self-preservation, I have no other choice," the black-robed Adams said with a somber face.
"You still only have Mind II and cannot see those rustling, lurking shadows at the edge of the camp. Yet, I can see them very clearly through my Mind Body vision; they are becoming more numerous, forming groups with malice peering over here..." Black-robed Adams said all in one breath and paused, "I am certain that someone behind the scenes is planning an attack."
"I have not felt any malice," Medea said over the channel to Nora.
"Do you have evidence?" Nora asked.
"Evidence? Of course, I knew you would ask that," Adams said in a low voice, "I can prove it. I can feel their hunger, those beasts crawling in the darkness, craving our Flesh."
"Haven’t you caught your prey? Just tear off a hind leg—not too much—and then throw it into the distance, into the night. After a while, we’ll go take a look."
Medea and Nora exchanged a glance.
If it was just a small experiment, of course, there was no problem.
So Nora went over to a roasted deer and tore off its remaining hind leg.
"Eh, I remember this deer should have had one more leg," Sigrdrifa suddenly noticed the lighter weight on the grill.
"It must have been eaten by you," Eleanor said indifferently.
"That’s not true!" Sigrdrifa protested.
From beginning to end, the two girls had not noticed that there were three other people standing by their side, due to the interference of the "Mind Blind Zone" with human perception.
Adams took the deer leg, his throat squirming for a while (swallowing saliva), and then forcefully threw it into the darkness beyond the reach of the campfire.
Next, all three of them changed their expression at the same time.
A dense mass of Mind Bodies flooded out of the darkness, swirling continuously around the spot where the deer leg fell, and emotions of bloodthirst, wildness, evil, and cruelty started to drift.
Adams quickly pulled a burning stick from beneath the grill and threw it again toward that spot.
These small Mind Bodies rapidly avoided the thrown light source. The burning stick fell near the deer leg, causing onlookers to shrink their pupils with the cold sweat breaking out on their backs.
That deer leg lay desolately outside the camp on the barren ground, not even a shred of meat left on it, only a dense mass of marks that looked as though it had been gnawed on by some rodent.
