Rich in the 70s: I Made a Rugged Veteran a Millionaire-Chapter 30: Noted in My Little Notebook
Jiang Cheng followed Uncle Sun a bit anxiously towards the courtyard.
On the way, she learned that Shen Xing had gotten into a fight with a classmate at school and accidentally fell into a drainage ditch.
"Don’t worry, kids fight all the time; they’ll grow out of it while fighting."
Uncle Sun had a good impression of Jiang Cheng, thanks to her personable nature.
"That’s true."
Jiang Cheng understood that Uncle Sun was trying to comfort her out of kindness; she didn’t need to determine who was right or wrong.
The two walked into the alley, and after the next turn, they’d be there.
The dark road was filled with the sound of wind howling through, and the moonlight made the trees’ shadows dance.
"Brother—don’t go—"
Shen Yue’s voice.
Jiang Cheng’s heart sank, and for the first time, she looked at Uncle Sun in panic.
"Didn’t he just hurt his leg?"
Uncle Sun was also startled.
"Yeah, I didn’t see any other injuries."
Jiang Cheng had already rushed into the courtyard, with Uncle Sun following closely behind.
In the courtyard, under the dim light, Shen Yue stood angrily at the doorway with her arms outstretched, blocking Shen Xing who was trying to hop on one leg.
Jiang Cheng felt relieved; it turned out to be that kind of "don’t go."
Scared me to death.
"Shen Yue, move. I need to go to the bathroom."
"No way! Granny said you can’t put weight on your leg."
Shen Yue stubbornly blocked Shen Xing at the door.
"Sister Jiang Cheng!"
Shen Yue still stubbornly stretched out her arms, refusing to lower them, saying, "Don’t try to trick me!"
Shen Xing said helplessly, "I’m not, Sister Jiang Cheng is really back."
Jiang Cheng had already come over and stood beside Shen Yue.
"I’m back."
Shen Yue’s little nose suddenly felt sore, and she pursed her little lips.
"Sister—"
"It’s okay, I’m back."
Jiang Cheng looked at Shen Xing, whose face was flushed with embarrassment.
"Do you have to go number two?"
Shen Xing nodded shyly; he really couldn’t hold it any longer.
Jiang Cheng calmly fetched the slop bucket from the house, put it inside, and found some toilet paper to place beside it.
"We’ll be outside. Hold onto the table so you don’t fall in. Tomorrow, I’ll figure out a lid for it."
Jiang Cheng led Shen Yue away, closed the door properly, and walked over to Uncle Sun to express her gratitude.
Uncle Sun waved his hand, saying, "As long as the person is okay, scared me half to death."
Uncle Sun asked if she needed help, but Jiang Cheng said no, so he went back first.
Jiang Cheng mentally noted to thank Uncle Sun and sat on the steps with Shen Yue to inquire about the fighting incident.
"Yue Yue, does Zhu Xiaopang often bully you and Shen Xing?"
Shen Yue nodded with her little bun face, feeling wronged, "Sister, they say we’re orphans, say Mom and Dad don’t like us, that’s why they left."
"They even say I cursed Dad and Mom to death, sister, is it really my fault?"
"Of course not. Who do you believe, your sister or them?"
Shen Yue firmly said, "I believe Sister."
Jiang Cheng held Shen Yue’s little shoulders and let her lean against her.
"That’s right! You have parents; they just went ahead because they were sick. You’re not an orphan. You have a big brother, Brother Xing Xing, Granny Shen, and me, your sister. We all love you, okay?"
"Uh-huh."
Shen Yue nodded.
Just a door away, Shen Xing leaned against the wall, the stubbornness of a teenager making him grit his teeth. His hand wiped his eyes vigorously, but couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.
Ten minutes later, Shen Xing opened the door hopping on one leg.
"Sis—"
"Shen Yue, help your brother back to his room."
After Jiang Cheng gave this instruction, she took the slop bucket and a bucket of water outside to the public restroom.
Shen Xing wanted to cry again.
He was supposed to be a man!
After cleaning up, Jiang Cheng happened to meet Grandma Shen, who was returning quickly with a flashlight after picking up medicine.
"Grandma Shen!"
Jiang Cheng approached, taking the medicine bottle from Grandma Shen’s hands.
"What are you doing with this?"
"Nothing, just emptying the slop bucket."
Grandma Shen wasn’t foolish; no one empties a slop bucket carrying two buckets.
Thinking of Shen Xing’s inability to move, she understood.
"Jiang Cheng—"
"Grandma Shen, maybe you shouldn’t be so nice to me in the future?"
Grandma Shen chuckled helplessly, no longer thinking about expressing thanks.
Too polite.
Jiang Cheng smiled and followed Grandma Shen into Shen Xing’s room. Both of them paused in their steps, exchanging a meaningful glance.
Shen Xing lay on the bed, covered with a blanket. If not for the movement of his eyes, Jiang Cheng would have thought she was there to admire a memorial.
The proper posture, the perfectly smooth blanket without a single crease, even the height of the cover was "deadly" precise.
"This way of covering the blanket is quite innovative."
Jiang Cheng couldn’t help but tease, only to hear Shen Yue proudly claim, "Sister, it was me! It was me!"
Jiang Cheng: What a good little sister!
Even Grandma Shen was a bit speechless. Mainly, who covers a living person with a white sheet?
"Stop lying down. Get up and apply the medicine."
Shen Xing didn’t want to lie down, but he wanted to cooperate with Shen Yue after seeing her cry.
Grandma Shen took out a gray-black ointment from the bottle and applied it to Shen Xing’s ankle.
Shen Xing’s foot was sprained, and the whole ankle was swollen like a big bruise.
"This medicine is effective; anyone in our neighborhood with a sprain or fracture comes to us for it."
After Grandma Shen applied the medicine and went out to wash her hands, Jiang Cheng asked Shen Xing a few questions. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Did you fight before?"
Shen Xing shook his head.
"No, Zhu Pengcheng at most pretended to block our way with a few friends, throw our backpacks, and put dirt in our lunchboxes. We never actually fought."
"At most? For such a young age, you sure can endure a lot."
Jiang Cheng was getting angry hearing this, but Shen Xing remained calm.
Shen Xing shook his head and said quietly, "I can’t beat five people alone and still have to protect Yue Yue. I’ve noted down all the times they bullied me. When my big brother comes back, I’ll show him!"
"Not bad, at least you’re not stupid."
Jiang Cheng asked for Shen Xing’s little notebook.
At the door, Jiang Cheng said to Shen Xing, "You don’t have to wait for your big brother; your sister alone is enough!"
"Tomorrow, you’ll see what it means to win without a fight."
Jiang Cheng returned to the opposite room, and Shen Xing lay on the bed, thinking silently: I should find more receipts for Sister.
In the opposite room, Jiang Cheng flipped through Shen Xing’s small notebook.
Almost every day, several people bullied Shen Xing and Shen Yue, both verbally and physically.
With a "snap," Jiang Cheng closed the notebook.
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and calmed herself.
When Jiang Cheng opened her eyes again, they were clear and resolute.
She was good to Shen Xing and Shen Yue because they were good and because they shared a similar childhood.
The only difference was that she chose to resist from the very beginning because she had no one but herself.
But Shen Xing’s sensibility made her heartache even more.
He had written so many letters to his big brother yet never mentioned the things in this notebook.
He worried about his sister, worried about his brother, but never worried about himself.
As night fell, Jiang Cheng, after organizing her emotions, continued to study.
Somewhere unknown to her, Shen Que received another letter from Shen Xing.
"Big brother, a beautiful sister has moved into our house. Her name is Jiang Cheng..."
Shen Que: Jiang... which Cheng?
At that moment, he didn’t realize that in all the letters he would receive in the future, Jiang Cheng would be the only central figure.
