Chapter 7: It Wasn’t A Dream

Jason had never expected that the Steven who was always silent would speak back at him, and so rudely at that.

Remembering that Steven had called him a mere staff member made his anger skyrocket. Even though it was true, those words had not felt humbling. Rather, it felt like he was being humiliated.

But what made him even more furious than he already was were Steven’s last words before ending the call.

"He said that he will be the last person I see before I hit rock bottom. Was he threatening me? Did he dare threaten me?!" Jason seethed.

Jason was never someone to let things go just like that. Since Steven had dared to talk to him that way and threaten him, he would make sure that Steven lived to regret it. He would make sure that Steven would almost be unable to get a job in any other restaurant around.

He was sure that after Steven had been rejected in three to four places, he would come back to beg for his job back.

Jason smiled coldly to himself, imagining the scene when Steven came back and started begging him on his knees to take him back, pathetically and miserably. But it would be too late by then.

Without hesitation, he picked up his phone to call one of his friends who managed a restaurant nearby.

Steven smacked his lips in satisfaction, cleaning the last bit of baked beans from his plate.

The meal was sumptuous and very delicious, and it was the best meal he’d had in a very long time. It was also the first meal in a long while that he’d been able to eat with complete ease, not having to worry about how work or how life was going to be tomorrow, or if he was going to survive the next five days.

After the meal, Steven decided to set up his new phone. It was already late, so he planned to go to bed afterwards, with the intention of sleeping till late afternoon the next day.

Setting up the new phone didn’t take long, since he didn’t have much data to transfer over from his old phone. After he was done, he reset his old phone to factory settings and placed it in a corner where he would probably never touch it again.

Steven lay in his bed, his mind still replaying the events of the day, especially the part where he got hit by the car and the screen appeared.

Actually, now that he thought about it, the system had said something about his condition being critical and an emergency response activating.

"Wait a minute... Does that mean that I would have died today if I hadn’t been saved by the system?" He muttered in shock.

He had only just realised it, and a strange feeling welled up in his chest.

Thank you, system.

The fact that he’d had a close shave with death today and survived was really something to be grateful for.

Today had ended on a high note, but tomorrow was going to be even better. He hoped he would find an agency with his desired property.

Steven made himself comfortable and covered himself with a blanket. He closed his eyes and slowly drifted off to sleep.

The next day, it was almost noon before Steven woke up. The first thing he did was call up the system screen.

His face lit up with a bright smile when he saw the screen, confirming that everything that had happened yesterday wasn’t a dream.

He turned to his side, where his phone rested on an old wooden side table. He picked it up, and when the screen lit up, a frown creased his face.

The reason for this was a message from his former boss that read, "Prepare to crawl back here and beg."

So predictable.

Steven had been expecting something like this, but it was still a bit surprising that his former boss could actually stoop so low.

But what his former boss didn’t know was that Steven would make him do more than crawl.

Steven’s plan was to acquire the restaurant from the owner. He had already done the math the night before and was sure that the establishment wouldn’t go for more than $1M, which was an overly optimistic evaluation on his end.

The amount was still too much for him at the moment, but it wouldn’t take too long, as he has the system.

As for how he was going to bring his former boss down, as a former staff member of the establishment who had worked there for more than two years, he was fully aware of some of the man’s secret dealings.

His knowledge of it was actually one of the reasons why the man had been treating him that way, constantly nagging and always finding fault with everything he did.

The incident had happened a few days after he got employed. He had come to work early with the enthusiasm of a new employee and saw his boss packing some of the inventory away.

He had an idea of what was going on but made the decision to look the other way. However, his former boss hadn’t been willing to take any chances. He called Steven into his office later that day and made him an offer, giving him a role and trying to secure his loyalty.

But Steven, unwilling to be involved in something like that or to become anyone’s lapdog, had politely refused the offer, which hurt his former boss’ pride. And that was the beginning of hell for him.

I guess things have been going his way for so long that he’s become overconfident. Time to knock him down a peg and get payback for every sh*t he put me through.

Steven dropped his phone and got out of bed to start preparing for his day. The issue with his boss would be handled, but at a later date. He had something far more important to take care of today.

He stepped out of the bathroom a couple of minutes later, dried his body, and started dressing, putting on a pair of the new clothes he had bought.

After he was done, he walked to the kitchen area to start making breakfast. He had no plans of leaving the house without eating, or eating out.
