Rise of The Demon General-Chapter 486. Trip Down Memory Lane
Chapter 486: Chapter 486. Trip Down Memory Lane
"Yes, colonel," One of the soldiers behind Hao Yang answered. Hao Yang turned back and looked in disbelief as many soldiers walked past him.
"Yong Huan...?" Hao Yang called one of these soldiers.
"Sorry, Lieutenant Colonel. I chose to follow Colonel Amon," Yong Huang answered. He walked to Amon’s side with all the soldiers who followed him. Out of the eight hundred soldiers under Hao Yang, almost two hundred chose to stand with Amon.
Seeing the situation, Hao Yang understood, then. "How dare you! You are deserting the eighth prince? Have you all forgotten what His Highness did for us? He stopped Kazhan tribes from raiding our towns. We all owe him! That is why we joined his army! This is how you repay him?"
"We have repaid him enough with all these years fighting for him," Yong Huang replied. "You can’t deny after serving him for so long that he had no desire to stop fighting. He will continue to send us into one war after another. I can’t imagine what kind of endless wars he will put this country under if he becomes the king. Unlike Prince Huang Zhan, Prince Huang San chooses peace. This is reflected by his desire to exterminate the rebels so peace can return to this kingdom. I’m sure he can negotiate for peace with Kazhan once he becomes the king."
"You are delusional if you think Prince Huang San can be king," Hao Yang said.
"Maybe, but I believe in Colonel Amon. If he said he could help Prince Huang San to be king, he would," Yong Huang replied.
Hao Yang gritted his teeth. "Prince Huang Zhan won’t let this treachery go."
"We will be applying for transfer to the First Demon Legion. Prince Huang Zhan can’t defy this official request. The king had designated the campaign to eliminate the rebels took precedence."
"If you do something to us, he will know about your betrayal. He won’t let you go! You know what happens to people who betrayed him!"
"He won’t stay in power for long!" Amon declared while floating up. Amon put his hand up. The soldiers drew their bowstrings.
Some soldiers behind Hao Yang started yelling, "Wait! I’m willing to join Prince Huang San as well!"
"Traitors!" Hao Yang scolded.
To those soldiers’ despair, Amon said, "No. You could have just said it to save your lives. You might run back to the eighth prince after leaving here. I can’t take that chance. Fire...!!!"
The arrows were loose. With the soldiers positioned under the hole, they became sitting ducks. The only ones they could strike were their comrades who had defected. Yong Huan and the others were prepared, though. They formed a line and focused on defense while arrows from above battered Hao Yang’s soldiers.
Only those with Mystic Stage cultivation had a chance to get away from their disadvantageous position. These soldiers flew up under a rain of arrows. They left their comrades who struggled helplessly below. Under such a critical situation, it was every man for himself. Xin Wuming and the others in the sky were ready for them. They engaged these fleeing soldiers.
"Brother, stay with me!" Hao Yang was among the soldiers who took to the sky. He heard Hao Meng’s reply from behind, "Right behind you, bro!"
Three Beginning Mystic Stage soldiers blocked Hao Yang’s way. "Fuck off!!!" He yelled while swinging his large blade. The impact sent the three soldiers away. He could fly off now that the obstacles were gone. He yelled, "This is our chance, brother! Follow me!!"
He was about to dash forward but didn’t because he didn’t hear a reply from Hao Meng. He turned back and was horrified to find Hao Meng in Amon’s hand. A black dagger had pierced the side of his head. Its black tip came out the other side of that head.
"No, brother...!!!" Hao Yang cried in anguish.
"Worry about yourself."
Hao Yang heard a voice and sensed a strong aura from behind. He looked back and saw Bu Zheng. Bu Zheng’s hand had enlarged disproportionately. This giant hand formed a palm before slapping down. Bu Zheng’s enhanced Crushing Palm created a pressurized field that caused Hao Yang to have difficulty breathing.
Hao Yang couldn’t dodge the palm strike. He performed martial arts using his blade to block the attack, but his hastily executed defense was insufficient. The palm strike sent him crashing back into the ground. Arrows soon riddled his body. He used defensive art that hardened his skin but couldn’t stop all the arrows. Some pierced his body.
"Curse you, Amon! A fiend like you won’t end well...!!" Hao Yang shouted. Arrows continued to fall upon him.
Before long, the battlefield was quiet. The fighting stopped. All of Hao Yang’s soldiers were slain except for those who defected.
Yong Huang lost a few soldiers, but it was not significant. Hao Yang’s soldiers were too busy trying to survive to focus on fighting them. Yong Huang eyed the corpses that littered the battlefield. He knew he had made the right choice, but those dead soldiers used to be his comrades. Seeing those corpses inadvertently made him question his decision.
Amon landed behind Yong Huang. He could see the mental struggle from Yong Huang’s eyes. "Good job. You won’t regret this decision. You are one of us now," Amon said. He placed his hand on Yong Huang’s shoulder.
Yong Huang took a deep breath and nodded. "I won’t disappoint you," he uttered.
Amon ordered his soldiers to clean up the battlefield. The corpses were to be burned. Killing fellow soldiers was a crime. They would be in trouble if this was found out. The soldiers Amon brought here were all his loyal followers. They were the ones recruited from his Demon Gang. As for the troops under Yong Huang, they were even more guilty than Amon because the victims used to be their comrades. If their deed was discovered, they would face harsher punishment.
Bu Zheng stood beside Amon inside the ruin while the soldiers cleaned up the battlefield. He glanced at Amon and couldn’t help but shudder. He never expected this to happen when they set out.
"Being among this ruin reminded me of a time when I was still a Royal Academy student," Amon spoke.
"Huh?" Bu Zheng was slightly at a loss by this seemingly light conversation. "You were a Royal Academy student?"
"Did I never tell you?" Amon asked back.
"No, but now that you mentioned it, I think I heard people talk about it before. You were at the top rank in the academy, weren’t you?"
"First rank during my freshman and junior years, second during the senior years."
"That’s impressive," Bu Zheng remarked. "But seeing your achievements, I don’t think that is surprising. Anyway, what makes this ruin remind you of your academy years?"
"I had a mission that sent me to an excavated ancient ruin. That was where I first crossed paths with the rebels."
"Ah, now I also remembered hearing about this. You were captured by the rebels before later being saved by the kingdom soldiers. Your hatred of the rebels must have stemmed from that incident."
"That’s right. When I was held by the rebels, I pretended to know about the treasure they were looking for."
"I am aware of that story. You tricked the rebels into thinking that you know about... What’s the name?"
"The allure beacon," Amon said.
"Ah, yes. The allure beacon. Fancy name. Never understand why the rebels are so obsessed with that artifact."
Amon chuckled. "Do you want to know what is so funny about the incident? My claim about the artifact is not a pretense."
"Huh? Do you mean..."
Amon shook his head. "Perhaps I spoke too much. I shouldn’t have taken a trip down memory lane. Forget what I have said."
Amon flew away, leaving Bu Zheng, who watched him from the ruins.
---------------
A few days later, inside one of the rebels’ hidden bases, Ni Lulu was reading various reports when Bu Zheng entered her quarter.
"Cousin, how is your operation with the First Demon Legion?" Ni Lulu asked.
"We slaughtered all the people you sent to the ruins," Bu Zheng answered.
"No need to feel bad about them. They are disposable weaklings. We need to sacrifice them to help you keep up appearance. Even with their losses, we win more on other battlefields. We have taken out three platoons of kingdom soldiers thanks to your intel."
"It’s the least I can do," Bu Zheng said.
"Be patient, cousin. You might not need to stay there for long. The deadline for the trial is fast approaching. Even if they do a full-out campaign to attack us, they won’t succeed with you informing us of their plan. We only need to wait until the deadline. The kingdom announced they would wipe us out using this First Demon Legion. Once the public sees how empty a kingdom’s promise is, everyone will lose faith in them. When that happens, many will be willing to join us. We will then only need to wait until we are strong enough to go on the offensive."
"I might have something that can help you get strong faster," Bu Zheng said. freewebnoveℓ.com
"Oh? Did you hear something valuable?" Ni Lulu asked.
"Perhaps. Are you still looking for the Allure Beacon?"
