Rising from his seated position, he stepped out of the glowing circle and almost instantly, the luminous inscriptions on the ground dimmed as if a switch had been flipped.
Ethan regarded him with a slightly more appreciative gaze, though his wariness remained entirely intact.
Without hesitation, he extended his hand again and expected the sheath to be returned.
However, this time, Master Argos didn't comply immediately. Instead, he stated firmly,
"First, the payment..."
"Ahh, certainly..." Ethan responded and found the request reasonable.
Without hesitation, he retrieved twenty high-tier dark elemental crystals from his spatial storage and handed them over.
Master Argos's lips curled into a faint smile as he accepted the payment and in turn, passed the sheath to Ethan.
Ethan ran his fingers across its smooth reinforced surface as he admired the craftsmanship.
Each contour was flawless and the weight was perfectly balanced.
Meanwhile, Master Argos, though slightly pained to part with the sheath consoled himself with the belief that both the weapon and its new sheath would soon fall into his possession regardless.
As Ethan busied himself testing the sheath and slid the Black Dragon Saber in and out repeatedly, Master Argos carefully examined the crystals for any flaws or counterfeits.
Once satisfied, he finally spoke again and offered an explanation.
"The multicolored patterns on the sheath aren't just for aesthetics.
They provide protective enchantments and allow the blade to resist mild magical attacks from various elements.
It won't burn, freeze, or crumble under typical circumstances." He then cast a pointed look at Ethan.
"However, don't mistake this for invincibility.
No artifact is indestructible as enough force of the right intensity of magic or an attack beyond its threshold will compromise its integrity.
So, I would advise against reckless experiments."
Ethan nodded and absorbed the information.
Without further delay, he turned to leave.
The evening had already stretched on, and he had no intention of idling here any further.
Just as Ethan reached the staircase, a sharp verbal clash pricked at his senses.
His brows knitted together as he quickened his pace and his expression darkened the moment he caught the chilling tone of a familiar voice.
"You can go fuck yourself, you disgusting bastard!!"
It was Virelle. And judging by the ice-cold venom in her words, she was very livid.
Meanwhile, at the top of the staircase, Master Argos smirked and his newly erupting thoughts were laced with amusement.
Finally, that numbskull is here. Now, all I have to do is watch the show... Heh. It's good, I have been bored lately.
This will surely lift my sour mood.
In a mere instant, Ethan reached the first floor and his figure was like a phantom blur as he apparated like a specter.
Master Argos who was still relishing the success of his little scheme was caught off guard.
Only when he looked down did he realize Ethan was already on the first floor.
His eyes widened in alarm and without a second thought, he rushed after him.
The scene that met Ethan's gaze upon arrival turned the ice in his eyes into something even colder.
A colossal sinister black broadsword that was wreathed in ominous writhing black flames, cleaved through a web of crimson threads.
The searing blade incinerated them on contact and reduced the intricate weave to nothing but scattered and smoldering ashes while the air itself seemed to ignite in the blade's wake.
A fierce gust followed the strike and whipped through the chamber and Virelle seized the momentum.
With practiced grace, she glided backward across the polished floor as though skating with a firm grip on both Velcy and the elven girl, Aurae.
The oppressive air around the towering black knight vibrated violently.
It swirled and twisted and a roiling tempest of dust and raw power coiled around him like a storm on the brink of devastation which was ready to consume everything in its path.
Ethan reacted before any conscious thought could catch up as his instincts ignited like a spark in dry tinder.
In the blink of an eye, the black knight's shadow flickered and his massive form vanished from sight.
The only evidence of his departure was the sharp sonic boom that followed.
It was a deafening burst that nearly sent the trembling young master beside him into a humiliating mess of fear.
Virelle's eyes widened in sheer horror and that was the only reaction she could muster in that split second as a wickedly sharp edge descended upon her from above while gleaming with the promise of sure death.
Time seemed to stretch and the world seemed to slow down to a suffocating crawl.
Velcy's ice-blue eyes mirrored her widening panic but amidst the chaos, it was the dark elf Aurae who remained eerily calm.
Her gaze flickered with grim determination and her fingers twitched as if about to invoke a spell.
Yet just as she was about to move, her sharp vision caught sight of something.
It was a glinting green projectile slicing through the air.
In an instant, she withdrew her raised hand and seamlessly slipped into the same panic-stricken facade as her companions.
Just as it seemed inevitable that Virelle would be cleaved in half, a small and sharp green blur struck the descending blade with pinpoint precision.
A deafening impact followed and shook the entire hall.
A visible shockwave pulsed outward and sent cracks through the floor as the blurry greatsword was violently deflected.
The sudden interruption caused it to be slammed into the ground with a forceful crash.
The colossal black knight was hurled sideways and his fearsome momentum was shattered mid-strike.
Before the stunned onlookers could even process what had happened, a streak of dark motion erupted and chased after the knight's tumbling form like a predator refusing to let its prey escape.
The knight's glowing crimson eyes flickered with warning and danger prickled through his very soul.
A gleaming curved black saber wreathed in tendrils of chilling dark mist arced toward him while aiming for his exposed flank with lethal precision.
