Rise of the Supreme Necromancer-Chapter 71: The Inquisitors Move
The wall of the castle and the surrounding darkness hid Aleric from the sight of the defenders. From there, he patiently waited for his undead to exhaust their resistance.
Where living soldiers would’ve gotten tired from endlessly climbing the ladders, being thrown down, and then putting them up again, the undead were only focused on their tasks.
No matter how many stones the defenders threw at the heads of skeletons, there were always more of them. Eventually, the living hands grew tired of lifting these rocks. The legs became too slow in running from one ladder to another to push them off.
That’s when the first skeleton climbed onto the wall and opened the path for dozens more.
’Besides the initial losses, things are going smoothly,’ Aleric thought. ’But what are the inquisitors waiting for? Why aren’t they fighting with the others? Are they waiting for me to show myself?’
The reason was telling him that this was a bad idea, but hiding felt just as terrible...
He glanced around, then gestured with his hand. Immediately, three zombie soldiers with shields detached from the general crowd. Aleric dismounted, and they surrounded him, protecting him with their shields.
’I will reduce my losses in this fight,’ Aleric thought, putting a hand on the Ghost Blade.
Immediately, the apparition appeared near him.
"No light..."
Next moment, pulled by Aleric’s power, the ghost flew into the wall and up through it, toward a section that was farthest from the inquisitors and their Light magic.
There were ladders being put up as well. Some skeletons were trying to get a foothold on the wall, but the defenders were pushing them back.
In this moment, the ghost flew from the wall underneath them and lunged at the nearest living soldiers.
The man didn’t even have time to gasp before the ghost’s Dark magic ripped the life out of his body!
The ghost continued to decimate surrounding soldiers, killing one after another. The skeletons nearby, who weren’t affected by the ghost at all, advanced.
Aleric raised the Spine Staff and focused. Although casting Raise Undead Slaves at this distance was hard, he had the mana and skill to do it with relative ease.
Dark energy gathered around him and flew toward the wall, making the recently killed soldiers rise again and turn their weapons on their former comrades. With extra support, the skeletons easily defended the nearby ladders.
But none of this was unnoticed by the inquisitors.
"He’s below, I can sense it... Damn, I can’t shoot from the bow from this angle. I wish I had a handgun—it would have pierced these shields like paper," said Farlan the archer.
"The fiend shows his power... But Light will protect us," Maria muttered. "This will be my last major blessing for today, brothers."
She muttered the words of a spell and raised her hands. Light flew through them like a long, thin snake that flew through the lines of soldiers there, touching a couple of hundred people in the front row of the fighting.
Each of these people immediately felt invigorated. Each soldier felt new strength in their tired muscles.
"The Light is with us!" they shouted in relief. "A cleric is here to guide and help us!"
A soldier beheaded a skeleton with a sword and grinned. He felt ready to take on even the undead!
Then, he saw a glowing green apparition in front of him. The figure of a legless old man moaned, then lunged at him.
"My sword is blessed!" the soldier shouted, swinging his weapon.
It passed harmlessly through the ghost. The man’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Before he realized that he had misunderstood the magic that strengthened him, the ghost passed through his body, killing him instantly.
But as soon as this happened, the ghost moaned in pain, too.
Below, Aleric clenched the Ghost Blade, feeling its magic tremble.
’Damn it! Was the ghost hit by this powerful Light energy I felt earlier? No, then it’d just be destroyed. Right now, it’s only slightly wounded. It can still fight.’
A moment later, Aleric understood what happened.
He could sense the blessing on the fighting soldiers. It wasn’t too powerful on its own, but it was still made from Light energy. The ghost was damaged just by attacking a blessed person.
’It really is too vulnerable... Deadly but fragile, like a glass sword,’ Aleric thought.
He forced the ghost to return for now, before it was attacked directly. The deed was done already, anyway—more and more undead climbed up the wall by the second. Aleric even saw Samuel climbing the ladder.
Aleric continued to raise undead slaves from the bodies on the wall. On a battlefield, he never lacked mana thanks to all the deaths that were happening near. Through the Dark energy in his servants and the energy of people’s deaths, he saw the battlefield almost as well as with his eyes.
He could tell that Samuel reached the wall and was crushing all opposition while letting other undead cover his flanks. Soon, he could have gone down the wall and pushed the city’s gates open.
Aleric began to think the inquisitors wouldn’t interfere directly at all, until he felt them moving.
But at this moment, the inquisitors moved from their spot and began moving toward him. And each of them was as unstoppable to the undead as Samuel was unstoppable for living!
Each of their weapons was blessed, and each swing destroyed not just the bodies of the undead but also the magic within them. Irkan’s sword was almost a copy of the one on Aleric’s hip, and it killed an undead after an undead. His companions weren’t far behind, either. Maria fought with a mace, Farlan replaced his bow with a pair of daggers, and his brother Karill was fighting with a flail and a shield.
The inquisitors made a wide line in the undead that were on the wall, leaving behind only unusable bodies. The sight left many soldiers staring in shock.
Then...
"This is our chance! Throw these ladders back down! Set them on fire!"
Aleric couldn’t see this, but he felt the inquisitors moving from the Light in them. And if the damage they did to the undead wasn’t enough...
They were going toward Samuel!
