Chapter 387: Chapter 359: Radiant and Brilliant (End of Main Story)

*

The rain poured all night and still hadn’t stopped by dawn.

When Shen Jianian woke up, it was almost ten thirty. Under the care of Fu Jichen, she lazily finished her morning routine and, on a whim, decided she didn’t want to dine at the hotel and discussed going out to find food with Fu Jichen.

Fu Jichen happily agreed to her suggestion.

Shen Jianian found a goose yellow dress in her suitcase and changed into it, then applied light makeup in front of the mirror. Due to the weather change, the temperature was a bit lower than yesterday. When they went out, Fu Jichen helped her with a thin windbreaker.

The hotel sent a car to take them to a street lined entirely with restaurants. Fu Jichen got out of the car first, opened a black umbrella, and extended a hand toward the car.

A slender, evenly-proportioned calf first poked out from the car, with white ankle boots stepping onto the wet pavement. Then, a small hand placed itself in the larger hand, bending out of the car, with a skirt in a shade of goose yellow peeking out from under a light beige windbreaker, adding a touch of warm color to the gray, misty rain.

Shen Jianian held onto Fu Jichen’s arm, her body sheltered under the umbrella, as she walked and glanced at the restaurants on both sides of the street, searching for one that caught her eye.

Not having done any homework in advance, Shen Jianian eventually chose a restaurant whose decor matched her aesthetic. The two climbed the steps, Fu Jichen put away the umbrella, held the door open for her, and placed the umbrella into a bucket by the entrance.

The scent of food wafted through the air inside, convincing Shen Jianian her intuition was right.

However, when the first bite of food entered her mouth, her expression immediately changed. Taking advantage of the fact that no one around could understand her, she directly commented, "It’s not good."

Fu Jichen tasted it as well and found the flavor indeed quite mediocre, not matching the restaurant’s stylish decor, so he suggested, "How about we try another place?"

"Never mind, let’s just make do and eat here."

Shen Jianian used a fork to pierce a piece of fried egg and took a bite. Only the egg tasted decent.

While chewing, Shen Jianian gazed out the floor-to-ceiling window; a bakery was open across the street. Eating the bland food, she thought, if only she had just gone to buy a sandwich.

Seeing Shen Jianian staring at the bakery opposite with barely a blink, Fu Jichen said, "Wait here," put down his cutlery, quickly took a napkin to wipe his mouth, then got up and went out.

He raised the umbrella and stepped into the rain, waiting by the roadside for the light to change.

Shen Jianian was stunned, unable to stop him in time; he had already walked far away, his dark silhouette standing there, like a scene captured from a movie.

Her first reaction was to pick up her phone and take a photo of the man outside the window.

The phone dinged at this moment, displaying a WeChat message notification at the top of the screen.

Shen Jianian tapped in, finding it was Zhao Shunyi who had sent tens of photos, all taken at the wedding.

Zhao Shunyi: "I was too exhausted last night. I went straight to bed and forgot to send you the photos."

Shen Jianian sent a heart emoji to express her thanks.

Zhao Shunyi replied with a kiss emoji.

Shen Jianian’s fingers lightly tapped the screen, enlarging the photos, flipping through them one by one. There were photos taken right after she changed into her wedding dress, of her arm in Pei Che’s as they walked the red carpet, of her standing under the heart-shaped flower arch gazing at Fu Jichen, of Fu Jichen lifting half her veil to kiss her, and even of the two of them dancing together at the brilliantly lit banquet, including shots of them secretly kissing on a white wooden chair.

Among them were several photos capturing fireworks, moments Shen Jianian regretted missing on her phone. Even when enclosed in photographs, their beauty was no less than when they lit up the sky, still so splendid.

After flipping through all the photos, Shen Jianian suddenly realized Fu Jichen had been gone for quite some time. She lifted her gaze, looking out through the side glass window, finding no trace of him by the roadside.

Could he have gone inside?

Shen Jianian set her phone down, her gaze fixed on the bakery opposite, thinking Fu Jichen must have seen her desire for bread, hence braved the rain to get some for her.

As time passed, four women and one man came out of the bakery, but still no sign of Fu Jichen.

Just then, the glass door of the restaurant was pushed open, and someone brought the umbrella in and placed it in the bucket. The newcomer was a tall man dressed in a black suit, his white shirt inside perfectly pressed. He had unbuttoned the collar without wearing a tie, his hair casually falling around yet still strikingly handsome.

One hand carried a takeaway paper bag from the bakery, exuding the sweet aroma of baked goods, while the other seemed to hold something hidden behind him.

The restaurant staff noticed the elegantly poised man walking straight toward the floor-to-ceiling window, where a quietly graceful woman was seated.

The woman seemed unaware of his approach, her gaze still fixated outside as if waiting for someone.

Only when the paper bag was placed on the table with a gentle rustle did Shen Jianian, lost in thought staring outside, snap back to attention. She retracted her gaze and turned to face the man’s smiling eyes directly.

"When did you get here?" Shen Jianian asked in surprise, pointing outside the window, "I was watching the store across the street the whole time without noticing you coming back."

"Perhaps you didn’t look closely."

Fu Jichen sat down, then revealed the item hidden behind his back and handed it to her.

It was a bouquet of sunflowers wrapped in brown recycled newspaper, the same warm hue as her dress.

Raindrops clung to Fu Jichen’s sleeve. He casually brushed them off, his voice carrying the moisture of the rainy day, low and deep, "There’s no sunshine today, Mrs. Fu didn’t get a delicious breakfast either, so I bought her sunflowers to cheer her up. Can you ask her if she’s feeling a bit better now?"

Shen Jianian glanced at the vibrant sunflowers, then her eyes lingered for a long time on the face of the man sitting across from her.

So, all this time, he had gone to buy her flowers.

On the way over, she hadn’t spotted a flower shop near the restaurant, so he must have gone far.

A sudden warmth spread through Shen Jianian’s eyes, reflecting a shimmering light under the lamp, but her lips curled up in a gentle, sweet smile, "Mrs. Fu says she likes the flowers you bought her very much, she’s feeling superb, as good as she could possibly feel."

She was certain, in the future years, whether on rainy days or sunny ones, with him by her side, her mood would always be as radiant and blooming as this bouquet of sunflowers.

Fu Jichen was also certain that no matter how many years might pass, even if they were old with white hair and missing teeth, in his eyes, she would always be the little girl in need of his care and affection.

His little girl.
