Scumbag Fate System-Chapter 105: Phase 2
Reinhard closed his dorm room door behind him and leaned against it with a tired smile on his face. The evening with everyone had been perfect. It was nice to see all of them together, even if it was just them sparring.
He headed to his bed before pausing when a familiar blue screen appeared in his vision without warning.
[Host!]
Reinhard blinked at the sudden appearance. I was going to call you up later anyway, he thought while moving to sit on his bed. Okay, Yor has returned from her trip, now let’s start the next phase.
[Of course, Host! I’m so happy to have such an amazing person like you! Check it out now, Host!]
The system’s text seemed to be bouncing with joy, far more than usual.
Reinhard raised a brow slightly. Why did the system seem so eager about this? What was different about this mission compared to the others he’d completed?
He watched as the blue screen in front of him began to shift and change. Text scrolled rapidly upward, disappearing as new information replaced it. The mission description he’d seen before was him becoming one with Yor. Had vanished, and now something new appeared, line by line.
[Main Fate Mission: Yor Noctyne - Phase 2]
[Status: Phase 1 Complete - Void Control Achieved]
[New Objective: Journey to Silent Peak]
[Task: Help Yor connect with the Void Sovereign]
[Reward: Shall be known after completion]
[Warning: Extreme Danger]
Reinhard sat up straighter as more details appeared on the screen. A map materialized showing the continent with a location marked far to the north. In the mountain ranges that formed a natural barrier between regions.
Silent Peak.
The place where Yor grandparents, Hellena and Marcus, headed to find a way to help Yor. And the place where they met their end. But "connect with the Void Sovereign"? That was something new; it seemed there really was something important on Silent Peak.
"What exactly is a Sovereign?"
The screen shifted again as new text appeared with what seemed like unusual gravity.
[Sovereigns are beings above Ascendant and Lord Hunter.]
Reinhard’s eyes widened, and he muttered. "So, they are Hunters-"
[They are more than Hunters, but beings that govern one of the fundamental forces of reality. They exist beyond normal magical limitations and are considered Divine Level beings in the world of Astra.]
Reinhard’s mind raced through the implications. Beings that controlled fundamental forces? That was power on a scale he’d never considered before. Even Ascendants like Victoria seemed small compared to what the system was describing.
But he supposes it makes sense, considering they are equivalent to what the gods were in his old world.
"Tell me about the Void Sovereign."
[The Void Sovereign specifically governs the force of nothingness and absence. It can create and control Void Distortions across entire continents.]
"Wait, so the Void Distortions all came from it?"
[That’s correct, host!]
"Is there a reason why, or does it involve Yor?"
[Well, it isn’t related to Yor. The reason there is Void Distortion is that the being is sealed, but its power is still leaking out in the world]
Leaking... Reinhard thought before sighing.
To think all of the Void Distortion came from the magic of the Void Sovereign leaking. It wasn’t even caused directly by it, but a consequence of it being sealed.
[Host, this is crucial information for completing Yor’s Main Fate. The Void Sovereign is directly connected to her power in ways that go beyond a normal Sigil.]
Reinhard held his chin at the system words. He felt something was off, like the pieces didn’t quite fit together the way they should. He began to take a step back and look over all the information he had.
Void Sovereign, the Void Distortion came from it, and Yor can devour it...
Then several things clicked into place simultaneously.
"Is Yor’s power related to this Void Sovereign?" Reinhard asked.
[Yes! That was a pretty good deduction!]
"Then let me do another one." Reinhard crossed his arms. "Did the Void Sovereign give Yor her Sigil?"
The system’s response didn’t appear immediately. The blue screen stayed blank for three full seconds before new words appeared.
[...Host, how did you guess that so accurately?]
Reinhard smiled slightly. "Several reasons, actually. Let me explain my thinking."
He stood and began pacing while organizing his thoughts. This felt a lot like debriefing the higher-ups on the current mission situation and the information he had discovered.
"First," Reinhard continued. "Yor awakened her power way earlier than the awakening ceremony. Either all Void Sigil users have their powers awaken early naturally, or something external triggered it specifically for her."
[Correct so far...]
"If you take it further. What if something simply gave her the Sigil directly? You’ve shown me that Sigils can be given, and the original owner had their Sigil removed. What says another being other than you can grant a Sigil?"
Reinhard’s pacing grew more animated as his deductions gained momentum. The blue screen followed his movement, staying in his peripheral vision.
"If A Sovereign is like a Divine Being and breaks the limitation of magic. Then being able to give someone a Sigil shouldn’t be impossible, just not something they have done or is known by the world."
[The host is absolutely right! Please continue!]
"The second reason is even more obvious once you think about it." Reinhard narrowed his eyes. "Void Distortions react to Yor specifically. Like in Noctyne Ruin, all of the surroundings reacted and matched Yor emotions, something that I have never seen done by others."
He held up his hand, thinking about his own Void Sigil that he’d gained from the Fate System.
"I have a Void Sigil too now. But distortions don’t react to me the way they react to her. They don’t reach for me or respond to my presence even though mine is better."
[Excellent observation, Host!]
"If the Void Distortions come from the sealed Void Sovereign, which makes sense given what you’ve told me about Sovereigns governing fundamental forces. Then Yor being directly connected to that Sovereign would explain why distortions react to her uniquely."
Reinhard stopped pacing before staring at the blue screen. "She’s not just using void power but also carrying a piece of it, most likely. The Void Sovereign gave her a fragment of itself, which created a connection that goes both ways. Leading to the Sovereign being able to sense her, and that means the Distortion as well."
The blue screen exploded with text and visual effects, stars and sparkles surrounding enthusiastic words.
[Host is completely correct! You’re so amazing, host!]
Reinhard’s lips twitched, but he began paying attention as more words appeared.
[You’ve identified one of the truths! Yor Noctyne was not born with a Void Sigil. The Void Sovereign itself granted her a piece of its power directly when she was very young. This created a unique bond between them.]
"Wait, is that unique just to her? Or to all Void Sigil users?"
[All Void Users in the Noctyne family will be connected to the Void Sovereign on a fundamental level.]
"How come none of them knew? Shouldn’t previous wielders..." Reinhard’s eyes widened. "Unless none of them found out because it requires them to go to Silent Peak to find out."
[Correct, all Noctyne Void users are unstable, and their powers will go out of control sooner or later. It’s because they are trying to contain a fragment of a Sovereign’s essence within a mortal body.]
Reinhard sat back down on his bed as the full weight of this revelation settled over him. Yor wasn’t just special because of rare abilities, but she carried actual divine power within her. A piece of something that governed reality itself.
No wonder her family had struggled to help her for so long, and no wonder professors couldn’t find solutions. They were trying to treat a normal Sigil problem when the issue was infinitely more complex.
"Why did the Sovereign choose the Noctyne family specifically?" Reinhard asked.
[That information can only be known by reaching the top of the Silent Peak.]
"And completing this will finish Yor’s Main Fate?"
[Phase 2 will be complete, yes. After this, you can start your next Main Fate.] 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Reinhard headed to the window and looked outside to see that everything was illuminated by the moonlight above. Somewhere out there, Yor was probably in her room, maybe thinking about the fun things they will be doing in the future.
She had no idea she carried a fragment of a Sovereign within her. No idea that her power came from something sealed away that still watched her from wherever it was imprisoned.
"What do I need to do?" Reinhard asked softly.
[You must take Yor to the peak of the Silent Peak, and then Yor’s trial will commence.]
A new map appeared showing detailed terrain. Mountain paths winding upward through dangerous territory with markers indicating zones of high magical disturbance.
[At the peak, Yor can establish direct communication with the Void Sovereign. This will allow her to fully understand her power’s origin and the new Void Distortions from appearing.]
"That sounds straightforward." Reinhard thought carefully. "So what’s the catch?"
The system’s screen shifted, and new words appeared.
[It’s extremely dangerous, more than anything you have already faced. There will be a lot of Fiends wandering the area with Void Distortions leaking around the area. Additionally, Silent Peak itself has claimed the lives of every Void Sigil user who attempted to reach the summit in the last fifty years. None has returned. All were consumed by something at the peak.]
Reinhard’s expression hardened.
He already knew it wouldn’t be a simple trip considering it already claim Yor grandparents. But based on the system words, this really pushes him and the others beyond their limit.
[Regardless... Host, the choice of whether to attempt this mission belongs to you.]
Reinhard stared at the text for a couple of seconds before smiling in anticipation.
He’d helped Yor gain control of her power when everyone else had failed. He’d built friendships and connections that made this academy more enjoyable. He’d grown stronger than he’d ever been in his previous life and experienced a better life.
And now? Now he had the chance to not only help Yor fully understand herself but also to help save people who’d been lost to Void Distortions.
Such as Sirin’s sister.
The danger was real, but that had never stopped him before; he was a spy who always completed the mission.
No matter the danger.
"Then I guess we’re going to Silent Peak." Reinhard said with a chuckle.
[Excellent resolve, Host! Prepare carefully. This mission will test everything you’ve learned.]
The blue screen faded, leaving Reinhard alone with his thoughts and the distant lights of the academy below.
