Shadow Husband:I Have a Hidden SSS-Class System-Chapter 25: BREAKING POINT
Sekar was waiting in the living room when Rama arrived home.
Not cooking. Not working. Not reading. Just sitting on the couch with her arms crossed and an expression that made his enhanced Combat Sense scream danger signals.
"Sit down," she said quietly.
Rama sat in the chair across from her, maintaining careful distance.
"Your emergency beacon went offline at 8:14 AM," Sekar began, her voice controlled. "It stayed offline for three hours and seventeen minutes. When I called you, you didn’t answer. When I checked your location, your phone was stationary in South Jakarta near an active C-rank gate." She leaned forward slightly. "So I’m going to ask you once, very clearly. What happened?"
"I disabled the beacon," Rama said.
"Why?"
"Because I was entering a C-rank dungeon with a party of experienced Hunters, and I didn’t want the beacon triggering if I took normal combat damage. It would have called you in the middle of a coordinated raid."
"You disabled safety equipment I specifically installed."
"Yes."
"Without discussing it with me first."
"Yes."
The silence stretched taut between them.
"Who were these Hunters?" Sekar asked.
"People I trained with at the Forge. They reached out about running C-rank content together. I said yes." All technically true. Just edited.
"Names?"
Here was the trap. If he gave fake names, she could verify through the Hunter Association database. If he gave real names, she could investigate them and potentially discover they were Players.
"I’d rather not say," Rama replied carefully. "They value their privacy, and I don’t want to expose them without permission."
"That’s not how this works."
"I know. But I’m asking you to trust me."
"Trust." Sekar’s laugh was bitter. "You disabled emergency equipment, ran a C-rank dungeon with people I don’t know, and now you’re refusing to tell me who they are. That’s not asking for trust. That’s asking for blind faith."
"I cleared the dungeon successfully. S-rank performance. Nobody got hurt. I came home safe." Rama met her eyes. "Isn’t that what matters?"
"What matters is that you’re keeping secrets again." She stood, pacing to the window. "I thought we were past this. I thought after our conversation, after training together, you’d be more honest."
"I have been more honest." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"Partial honesty isn’t honesty!" Her voice rose for the first time. "It’s just more sophisticated lying!"
The accusation landed like a physical blow because it was completely accurate.
"You’re right," Rama said quietly. "I’m still hiding things. And I know that’s not fair to you."
"Then stop hiding."
"I can’t. Not yet."
"Why not?"
"Because—" He stopped, choosing his words carefully. "Because there are things I need to do on my own. Ways I need to grow that don’t involve your protection or oversight. And if I tell you everything, you’ll try to manage it. Control it. Keep me safe by keeping me limited."
"That’s not—"
"It is." Rama stood. "I love you. And I know you love me. But your love comes with chains. Golden, well-intentioned chains. And I can’t grow while wearing them."
Sekar stared at him, hurt and anger warring across her face.
"So what are you asking for?" she said finally. "Permission to lie?"
"I’m asking for six more days. Six days where you don’t investigate, don’t interrogate, don’t track every movement." He took a step closer. "Six days from now, I’ll tell you everything. Every secret. Every hidden truth. But I need these six days first."
"Why six days specifically?"
Because that’s when his hidden quest deadline hit. Because that’s when he’d reach level fifty or fail trying. Because in six days, everything would change regardless.
"Because that’s when I’ll be ready," Rama said.
Sekar studied him for a long moment. Her S-rank perception analyzing every micro-expression, every breath pattern, every tell.
"Six days," she repeated. "And then full honesty."
"Yes."
"No more disabled beacons."
"Agreed."
"No more refusing to answer questions."
"Agreed."
"And if I find out you’re putting yourself in mortal danger—"
"Then you can intervene. But unless the danger is life-threatening, you give me space."
Another long silence. Outside, Jakarta’s afternoon traffic hummed.
"Six days," Sekar said finally. "But Rama? If you break this promise, if you lie to me after this—we’re done. I won’t cage you. I’ll just leave. Because I can’t live with someone I can’t trust."
The ultimatum was clear. Absolute. Final.
"Understood," Rama said.
Sekar nodded once and headed for the bedroom. "I’m going to shower and then go to the guild. I’ll be late tonight."
She closed the bedroom door with careful control. Not a slam. Worse—the sound of someone fighting to maintain composure.
Rama stood alone in the living room, the weight of the promise settling on his shoulders like a physical thing.
Six days. Then full truth or relationship over.
The walls were closing in from every direction now.
That evening, while Sekar was at the guild, Rama finally reviewed his Level 35 milestone skill options.
[MILESTONE REACHED: LEVEL 35]
[SELECT ONE SKILL:]
[OPTION 1: TITAN’S ENDURANCE - RANK S] [EFFECT: Passive. HP regeneration increased by 300%. Can survive one lethal blow per day (HP cannot drop below 1 for 3 seconds). No cooldown reduction.]
[OPTION 2: STORM BLADE - RANK A] [EFFECT: Active. Weapon attacks release energy projectiles. Ranged damage scales with Strength. 15 MP per strike. No cooldown.]
[OPTION 3: COMMANDER’S AURA - RANK A] [EFFECT: Active. All allies within 20 meters gain +20% to all combat stats. Duration: 5 minutes. Cooldown: 30 minutes.]
Rama studied each option carefully.
Storm Blade would give him ranged capabilities he currently lacked. Commander’s Aura would make him invaluable for team combat. But Titan’s Endurance...
An S-rank passive. Massive HP regeneration. And a once-per-day survival ability that would let him tank a killing blow.
For someone facing multiple deadly threats in the next six days, the choice was obvious.
[TITAN’S ENDURANCE - RANK S ACQUIRED]
[EFFECT: HP regeneration +300%. Once per day, can survive at 1 HP for 3 seconds after lethal damage.]
[NOTE: This passive will be partially visible to high-rank observers as unusual recovery speed.]
Rama felt the change immediately. The lingering soreness from the morning’s dungeon raid faded. His HP bar—currently at 82% from healing potion usage—began climbing faster. One percent every ten seconds instead of one percent per minute.
He’d be at full HP in three minutes.
His phone buzzed. Player Network message.
[SARI: Emergency meeting. Ascended activity detected. Tonight, 10 PM. Same location as last gathering. Mandatory attendance.]
[BUDI: This is serious. Don’t skip.]
[DEWI: Shadow Killer was spotted in Jakarta. Two Players went missing yesterday. Presumed dead.]
Rama stared at the messages.
The Ascended threat wasn’t theoretical anymore. It was here. Active. Killing Players.
He checked the time. 7:43 PM. Sekar had said she’d be late—probably not home until eleven or midnight.
Which meant he could attend the meeting and be back before she returned.
[RAMA: I’ll be there.]
He prepared carefully. Dark clothes. Combat gear stored in inventory. Emergency equipment. He enabled the beacon—Sekar would see him leave the building, but she’d also see him return safely.
Better to let her track him than break that promise less than twelve hours after making it.
At 9:30 PM, Rama left the penthouse.
His phone immediately showed a notification—Sekar’s tracking app registering his departure.
Twenty seconds later, she called.
"Where are you going?" No greeting. Just the question.
"Meeting some Hunters. Discussion about dungeon strategies." All true, technically.
"At 9:30 PM."
"They work day shifts. This is when they’re free."
"You’ll be back by when?"
"Midnight latest."
"Rama—"
"Six days. You promised me six days."
The silence on the line was heavy.
"Be safe," Sekar said finally. "And keep your phone on."
"I will."
She hung up without saying goodbye.
The warehouse was packed when Rama arrived. Not thirty Players like the last gathering—at least sixty. People had come from across Java, possibly beyond.
The atmosphere was tense. Afraid.
Ratna stood on the same raised platform, but her expression was harder than last time. "Thank you all for coming on short notice. We have a situation."
She pulled up holographic displays showing crime scene photos. Three locations. Three bodies. All Players.
"These happened in the last seventy-two hours. Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. All three victims were contacted by Ascended recruiters, all three refused to join, and all three were found dead within twenty-four hours."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd.
"The Jakarta victim was killed in his apartment despite A-rank security systems. The Bandung victim was killed in a public restaurant during lunch hour—witnesses reported seeing nothing unusual. The Surabaya victim simply vanished and was found three days later."
"Shadow Killer?" someone called out.
"We believe so, yes. But he’s not working alone anymore. Intelligence suggests at least five Ascended are operating as an assassination cell, targeting Players who refuse recruitment."
"What’s the Network’s response?" another Player demanded.
"Survival protocol is in effect. All Players are advised to travel in groups. Vary your routines. Install additional security. Report any contact with Ascended immediately." Ratna’s expression was grim. "And if you’re approached for recruitment, do not refuse outright. Stall. Say you need time to think. Contact the Network immediately."
"So we just let them intimidate us?" a young Player shouted. "We run and hide?"
"We survive," Ratna said firmly. "The Ascended want us to fight. They want open conflict that exposes Players to the world. We don’t give them that. We stay smart, stay hidden, and wait for opportunities to handle this quietly."
The meeting continued for another hour. More intelligence. More warnings. More fear.
Rama listened carefully, his mind tracking implications.
Six days until his hidden quest completed. Six days until he needed to come clean to Sekar. Six days until everything changed.
And now, six days during which a group of hostile Players were actively hunting and killing anyone who opposed them.
The timing couldn’t be worse.
The meeting broke up at 11:47 PM. Rama was heading for the exit when someone blocked his path.
Hasan. The same Player who’d "welcomed" him at the last gathering.
"Leaving so soon?" Hasan asked with that predatory smile. "We should talk."
"I’m on a schedule."
"This won’t take long." Hasan glanced around—most Players had already left. "I have an opportunity for you. Something better than hiding with Ratna’s cowards."
"I’m not interested."
"You haven’t heard the offer yet." Hasan leaned closer. "The Architect wants to meet you. Personally. He’s very interested in rapid-growth Players like yourself."
The Architect. The Ascended leader.
"I said I’m not interested."
"Think about it carefully." Hasan’s smile didn’t waver. "Refusing might be... unhealthy."
There it was. The threat barely disguised.
"I’ll think about it," Rama said, echoing Ratna’s advice. "Give me a few days."
"Don’t take too long. The Architect’s attention is valuable but temporary." Hasan stepped aside. "See you around, brother."
Rama left quickly, his Combat Sense screaming warnings.
He’d just been marked. Targeted for recruitment. Which meant he had days—maybe hours—before the Ascended decided he was either with them or against them.
Outside, he checked his phone.
One message from Sekar: "Tracking shows you’re heading home. Good. See you soon."
And one message from Sari: "Did Hasan approach you? We saw him corner you."
[RAMA: Yes. Recruitment offer. I stalled.]
[SARI: Smart. Don’t be alone for the next few days. They target isolated Players.]
[RAMA: Understood.]
Rama headed home through Jakarta’s late-night streets, hyperaware of every shadow, every movement, every potential threat.
[Hidden Quest Progress: 19/30]
[Days Remaining: 5]
[Levels Remaining: 15]
Five days. Fifteen levels. An assassination cell hunting Players. A wife on the verge of leaving him if he lied again. An ultimatum about full truth in less than a week.
The walls were closing in from every direction.
And Rama was running out of time to break through them.
[WARNING: HOSTILE PLAYER DETECTED NEARBY]
The System notification appeared without explanation.
Rama’s hand went to his sword immediately, scanning the empty street.
Nothing. Nobody visible.
But the warning remained.
He used [Void Step] twice in rapid succession, teleporting two blocks in different directions, taking an unpredictable path home.
The warning vanished.
Someone had been following him. Someone hostile enough that the System flagged them as a threat.
Rama made it to his building, through security, into the elevator, and finally into the penthouse at 12:07 AM.
Sekar wasn’t home yet.
He collapsed onto the couch, exhaustion and adrenaline warring in his system.
[NEW QUEST AVAILABLE]
[OBJECTIVE: Survive Ascended Attention]
[DURATION: Until Hidden Quest Completion]
[REWARD: ???]
[FAILURE PENALTY: Death]
