Sharing Dreams with My Bestie's Cousin-Chapter 71 - Reveal Itinerary
Chapter 71: Reveal Itinerary
Chapter 71: Reveal Itinerary
In the dimness, she heard Shang Hexing say to Kong Ci,”Little Master, could you please pour a glass of water?”
Kong Ci got up to pour the water.
It took less than half a minute for Kong Ci to bring the water to Wen Zhi. Shang Hexing said, “Thank you, Little Master.”
Kong Ci shook his head nonchalantly.
Wen Zhi had stopped coughing by then, but she kept her face buried on the table and refused to lift her head. After a while, Kong Ci asked, “Patroness, are you alright?”
Wen Zhi suddenly raised her head, “I’m fine.”
Shang Hexing’s lips curved in a smile, but he remained silent.
At that moment, Kong Ci said, “You’ve been coughing continuously. Your relative has taken good care of you.”
Wen Zhi pursed her lips tightly and turned her face slightly away, silently picking up her bowl and chopsticks again.
Then Kong Ci mentioned, “Patroness, on the day you first arrived, I happened to be outside the Guest Hall and overheard the receptionist monk asking you about your troubles.”
Wen Zhi put down her bowl and chopsticks, “Little Master, why are you eavesdropping at the corner!”
Shang Hexing glanced at her.
Wen Zhi steadied her emotions, trying to stay calm.
Kong Ci said casually, “Eavesdropping implies intent. I was just sweeping outside the Guest Hall when I accidentally overheard you say—’troubled by love’, so it wasn’t really eavesdropping.”
Wen Zhi: “…”
Shang Hexing dropped his gaze and concealed his smile.
“Alright, Little Master Kong Ci, let’s not talk about it anymore!” Wen Zhi gestured for him to stop.
At that point, she really didn’t dare to look at Shang Hexing’s face.
She wished fervently that a crack would appear in the ground for her to crawl into and hide herself away.
“Then I won’t mention it,” said Kong Ci. While he was able to perceive the essence of many things, this time he was somewhat puzzled, perhaps needing to meditate and chant the scriptures more to understand it better.
He picked up his handheld prayer beads, twiddled them, and said, “Amitabha.”
He turned and left.
With Kong Ci gone, Wen Zhi relaxed completely, but she still didn’t dare to look at Shang Hexing and quietly lowered her head to eat.
“Wen Zhi.”
Shang Hexing called her name.
Wen Zhi closed her eyes for a moment, then paused her eating and turned to him, “Actually, Kong Ci, he’s talking nonsense…”
She choked on her remaining words.
She saw Shang Hexing place a piece of tofu in her bowl with his chopsticks, “Eat your vegetables.”
Wen Zhi was momentarily startled.
He picked up another piece for her, “Tofu is mild in flavor, do you like it?”
Wen Zhi replied dazedly, “I’m used to it.”
He uttered an acknowledging sound and said no more.
Wen Zhi felt bewildered.
After the evening meal, Wen Zhi and Shang Hexing walked back to the Dormitory House together. The road was quiet, as if neither had much to say to each other.
Along the way, a monk passed by. The two of them were walking abreast, blocking the path, and Wen Zhi hadn’t noticed until Shang Hexing reached out to pull her aside to make room.
The monk brought his hands together in prayer, nodded slightly towards Shang Hexing, then strode away.
Wen Zhi caught a faint whiff of sandalwood, mingled with an even fainter scent of cold fir, familiar to her. By the time she snapped out of it, she found herself leaning against Shang Hexing’s chest, almost touching his face.
Shang Hexing took a half step back, “That’s enough.”
Wen Zhi stared at him for a moment and then suddenly asked, “Mr. Shang, how long will you stay at Jingci Temple?”
Walking ahead, Shang Hexing answered her, “Depending on my mood.”
Wen Zhi hurried to catch up, tentatively asking, “Then, may I disclose your itinerary?”
Shang Hexing’s lips curled, “To whom do you wish to disclose it?”
Wen Zhi kept pace beside him, “To Meng Fan.”
Shang Hexing asked, “Do you want her to come to the temple again?”
“She wouldn’t dare,” Wen Zhi said. “Because she is afraid of you.”
Shang Hexing paused mid-step and turned to look at her, “What about you?”
He had asked her this question before.
He even said—you seem very afraid of me.
The truth was, Wen Zhi wasn’t that afraid of him. He wasn’t some dark force, and people’s fear of him was more due to his status, the power he wielded; they feared him but it was more out of reverence.
The higher someone stands, the more unattainable they become, naturally creating a distance and a class which invoke involuntary fear.
Wen Zhi allowed a serene smile to blossom across her face, and under Shang Hexing’s scrutinizing gaze, she candidly answered him, “I’m not afraid.”
She then turned and walked ahead of him.
Shang Hexing followed behind, watching her walk quite a distance ahead, then he suddenly turned back and waved at him, “Mr. Shang, have a good rest early.”
“Alright,” he replied.
Wen Zhi returned to the Dormitory House first.
Having slept a lot in the afternoon, she thought she would be unable to sleep that night and so talked on the phone with Meng Fan.
By ten o’clock, she felt sleepy, ended the call with Meng Fan, and went to bed.
Yet that night, she found herself dreaming of Shang Hexing again.
