Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Debt Collection

Shen Heyu didn’t know what madness he was up to again, and she ignored him, continuing to walk forward back to their room.

Seeing that she refused to pay any attention to him, Pei Yansi felt an inexplicable rage building up in his chest. He followed her with a cold face, sat down on the sofa to smoke, and didn’t initiate conversation with her anymore.

This was exactly what Shen Heyu wanted. She got herself cleaned up, changed into clean clothes, and lay on the bed, ready to rest.

Pei Yansi, sitting on the sofa, found this scene a bit strange. He stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray and asked, “Aren’t you going to take a shower?”

Shen Heyu felt awkward, as though she had dirtied his bed. She replied, “My arm can’t touch water…”

After saying that, she added, “I’ll go sleep in the guest room.”

...

She felt like he was repulsed by her.

Pei Yansi frowned even more deeply and said, “Just stay here.”

After saying that, he turned and walked into the bathroom, filled a basin with hot water, and placed a towel in it. He then came over to the bed and told her, “Take off your clothes.”

Shen Heyu instinctively covered her chest with both hands and asked, “What for?”

“I’ll wipe you down.”

Without waiting for her to respond, Pei Yansi stepped forward, took off her clothes, and then washed the towel in the basin before wiping her body.

He wiped her down earnestly, his expression focused, and there was not a hint of lust in his eyes.

Shen Heyu watched this version of Pei Yansi somewhat dazedly; he had never treated her like this before.

After a while, once he had wiped down her body, she felt much more comfortable and lay back on the soft, big bed. Pei Yansi then went out to the balcony to make a phone call.

Shen Heyu couldn’t hear exactly what he was talking about, only catching a few words about “making sure.”

After hanging up the phone, Pei Yansi lay down beside her and said, “In two days, it’s Grandma’s birthday banquet.”

Shen Heyu’s mind suddenly cleared, nearly having forgotten about it. She said, “I will prepare a gift properly.”

Pei Yansi didn’t say anything, her words implying as if Grandma needed her gift.

The two of them slept far apart from each other.

The first half of the night, Shen Heyu slept comfortably, but during the second half, the man next to her unconsciously pulled her into his embrace, assuming a possessive posture.

She felt a bit uncomfortable, struggled a bit, but he held her even tighter.

Eventually, she gave up and fell asleep in his arms.

The next morning, Pei Yansi woke up before her, and seeing her curled up in his arms, he felt somewhat bewildered. Her sleeping face was quiet and beautiful, coyly nestled against his chest, the usual cold demeanor gone because of deep sleep.

He suddenly realized that this side of Shen Heyu was also very beautiful.

Just then, Shen Heyu opened her eyes and saw him staring at her. Startled, she realized how close their positions were; they never touched each other when they slept usually. She quickly moved back.

Just as she was trying to withdraw from his embrace, Pei Yansi tightly trapped her in his arms and said, “You want to stay away from me that much?”

Before Shen Heyu could respond, a voice from outside said, “Grandma wants you to come have breakfast.”

Shen Heyu glanced at the clock on the wall; it was already late in the morning. She quickly got out of bed.

She went into the bathroom first to wash up, Pei Yansi following her. The two of them washing up together in front of the mirror looked rather like an exemplary couple.

Shen Heyu went downstairs first, and the old lady greeted her with joy as soon as she saw her and said, “Come and sit next to Granny.”

Shen Heyu obediently sat down. Pei Yansi followed closely behind her and sat in his usual spot.

The old lady observed their estranged demeanor, sighed in her heart, and then said, “In a few days it’s my birthday banquet, and many people from our circle will be there. I will announce your relationship to everyone then…”

“No,” they both said simultaneously, cutting her off before she could finish.

Embarrassment crossed her face, her expression changing unpredictably, and then she continued, “Why not? You’ve been secretly married for so many years, how much longer do you plan to hide?”

Pei Yansi was the first to respond, “Now is not the time.”

The old lady, lost for words, asked, “When is the right time?”

Pei Yansi didn’t answer, and Shen Heyu also remained silent. Seeing them like that, the old lady said no more.

Still, she felt deeply unsatisfied in her heart.

They say with age one should enjoy the happiness brought by one’s children and grandchildren, but even though her grandson had been married for so many years, she hadn’t even seen the shadow of a great-grandchild.

The three of them ate in silence; the dining room was quiet until a ring of a telephone broke through the stillness.

Pei Yansi took out his phone and without avoiding anything, answered directly.

“Brother Yansi, where are you? I, I’m having some trouble… Can you come and help me?”

Despite not having the speaker on, everyone in the quiet dining hall could still hear the voice on the phone.

Upon hearing this, the old lady’s face darkened instantly.

Pei Yansi, as if unaffected, remembered he had no engagements today and agreed to help.

He hung up and stood up from the dining table, “I have to go.”

The old lady, very angry, said, “Are you going to see that vixen again? What place does Heyu have in your heart?”

Pei Yansi frowned, ignored her words, and strode off.

Seeing him so unaffected, the old lady felt a rush of indignation that made her chest heave. Shen Heyu, worried she might faint again, comforted her from behind, “Granny, don’t worry so much, your health is the most important.”

The old lady sighed heavily, realizing that no matter how much she talked, it wouldn’t change anything between them, and finally chose to keep quiet.

Meanwhile, Pei Yansi had left the ancestral home and headed straight to the hotel to find Bai Sheng’er.

He had just arrived at the hotel entrance when he saw Bai Sheng’er cornered by two tall men who were spouting abusive words, their menacing demeanor as if they were demanding something from her, their expressions almost devouring her.

Pei Yansi parked his car, quickly got out, and within a few strides reached them, grabbed one by the collar and fiercely yanked him back, then landed a kick on the other’s knee.

The two men staggered back from the force. Seeing a man protecting Bai Sheng’er, they didn’t dare to approach any further.

Pei Yansi looked at Bai Sheng’er, whose eyes were red with tears hanging on the brink of falling, and asked with concern, “What happened?”

Choking back tears, she cried, “They’re my family members. My father has accumulated a large debt outside, couldn’t pay it back, and used me as collateral…”

“They’ve come for me, saying I need to settle the debt…”

As she spoke, her tears flowed more heavily, making her look utterly pitiful.
