Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Sleep Talking

“Why do you look so pitiful even in a feverish slumber?”

He casually sat by the bed, staring at her. Her complexion was somewhat pale, and because of the pregnancy, there was a gentleness in her features that only a mother possessed.

Suddenly, a cold breeze blew in, causing her body to shiver. He looked towards the window and realized the French window was open, and the early autumn breeze was already quite chilly.

He scoffed internally, thinking that this was why she was always sick—she wasn’t a child anymore, yet she couldn’t even take care of herself in such matters.

He stood up to close the window and when he returned to the bedside, he heard her muttering something. Her voice was very soft and low; he couldn’t hear anything.

So, he bent down, bringing his ear close to hers, to listen to the words she was speaking.

...

“Mom, it really wasn’t me…”

“I really don’t know what happened, Mom. Do you believe me this time, please…”

“Stop hitting her, don’t hit my mom anymore…”

As Shen Heyu spoke more, her tone became more aggrieved, and two lines of clear tears fell from the corners of her eyes. Pei Yansi listened to these dream talk, his frown tightening.

Even in her dreams, she dreamed of this matter, never admitting in her dreams that Shen Fanshuang’s death was related to her.

Dreams had always been the best reflection of one’s innermost thoughts. Doubt began to stir in Pei Yansi’s heart for the first time—could it really not be her?

As he was pondering, Shen Heyu opened her eyes.

She looked up at him, her eyes still somewhat groggy, and spoke in a soft, feeble voice, “Why did you come here?”

While speaking, she raised her hand to wipe away the tears from the corners of her eyes.

She was merely dreaming of some unpleasant past events and couldn’t help shedding tears. The tears on her face brought a vivid sensation, waking her from the dream.

She just didn’t expect that when she opened her eyes, she would see Pei Yansi standing by her bedside.

Pei Yansi casually sat down, “Grandma told me to come.”

“Oh.” Shen Heyu discerned another layer of meaning in his words—it wasn’t that he wanted to come but that he was forced. Realizing this, she continued, “I’m awake now, if you have things to do, you can go ahead. I’ll talk to grandma.”

Pei Yansi smiled, but his smile didn’t reach his eyes as he looked at Shen Heyu, “Eager to see me leave?”

“Not at all.”

He knew it wasn’t true; he was just asking knowingly. He saw her reddened eye corners, recalling the tears she had just shed.

She had always faced the outside world with the coldest demeanor, icy and aloof, as if there was nothing in this world that could make her emotionally fluctuate.

He had always disliked her cold and detached demeanor because it always felt like she neither saw nor took him to heart.

Yet now, this icy person had secretly cried in her dreams.

He seemingly asked casually, “What did you dream about just now?”

“Nothing.” Those were not so pleasant past events, and she did not want him to know about them.

Besides, she never had the habit of revealing her vulnerability to the outside world.

“Is that so?” Pei Yansi clearly didn’t believe her, his gaze towards her cooled by several degrees, imbued with inquiry, almost as if he was forcing her to speak.

Shen Heyu met his probing gaze, and after a moment, she still said, “I dreamed of an unhappy childhood.”

“Not ideal?” he remembered that she was the young miss of the Shen Family, just like Shen Fanshuang, both raised like flowers in a greenhouse.

Shen Heyu explained, “The man now is not my real father. My father actually loved drinking. Every time he got drunk, he would come home and beat my mother. Later, he drank too much and died. My mother remarried and married the current Boss Shen.”

“But he didn’t take me and my sister with him. He only occasionally gave us a lot of money. My sister and I have been dependent on each other, and life has been very tough since our father’s death.”

Pei Yansi’s look changed again as he watched her.

Neither of them noticed, but this time his gaze carried a very obvious pity.

Shen Heyu found it odd and looking up at him, she asked, “Didn’t she tell you these things?”

Without saying it, Pei Yansi knew who she meant by ‘she.’

Shen Fanshuang.

Indeed, she had never told him about these things. He shook his head, said nothing, and both fell silent, the atmosphere in the room growing strange.

Pei Yansi glanced at his watch and told her, “You don’t have to go back to the company. Rest well.” As he stood up to leave, he stopped at the entrance and said, “I will come back tonight.”

He pulled open the door and left.

Shen Heyu didn’t know what his last sentence meant; he had never told her whether he would come home or not before.

She didn’t think much about it, lying on the bed and once again falling into a slumber.

After leaving the house, Pei Yansi got into the car driven by his chauffeur to go to the office. His mind kept replaying the scene from just now.

Shen Heyu’s days were not easy, and since Shen Fanshuang’s death, she had been increasingly isolated and dependent only on Shen Fanshuang. What excuse was there for such cruel treatment towards her?

Remembering her many explanations, he felt strange inside… Perhaps it really wasn’t her; the incident back then won’t likely be cleared up now.

Too much time has passed, the evidence too cleanly obliterated.

As soon as he returned to the office, thinking of Shen Heyu’s feeble state at home and knowing she was carrying his child,

As a man, he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. He told his assistant, Zhao Jin, “Have the nutritionist prepare some pregnancy-nourishing meals, and buy some extra pregnancy-care medications to send to her, to help her replenish.”

Zhao Jin was stunned for a moment, then quickly understood and grinned, “President Pei, you are getting more and more special towards Director Shen.”

Pei Yansi said sternly, “Shut up.” He just didn’t want to see her looking malnourished again, making it seem as if he didn’t feed her…

Zhao Jin grinned and didn’t ask more, knowing he was just denying his true feelings. Turning around to leave, he bumped into Bai Sheng’er who was just entering.

He greeted her with a smile and walked out.

Pei Yansi heard his greeting and looked out the door to see Bai Sheng’er wearing a white dress today, which made her look even more innocent.

“Is there something you need?” he asked softly, not having much energy to deal with her as he needed to think through Shen Heyu’s situation.

Bai Sheng’er immediately noticed the change in his attitude towards her.

It became colder.

She had just overheard his conversation with Zhao Jin. Shen Heyu was pregnant! They say a child can tie down a man’s heart; seeing his attitude change towards her, she felt a bit panicked.

She suppressed her thoughts and said, “I heard that the old lady’s birthday party is coming up, and I’d like to join the fun. Brother Yan Si, could you take me?”

Pei Yansi looked her up and down for a moment. It was just a birthday party, after all. He nodded, “Yes.”
