Chapter 212: Chapter 212: Victim: White Bone’s Injustice 12

Gao Yuelan picked up her tool and nudged it, then saw a complete hand bone. She screamed in fright, her face turning pale, and instinctively stepped back several paces.

Just as she was about to fall, someone caught her from behind.

"Lanlan, what’s wrong?"

She turned to see Chang Xianmin and quickly hugged him: "Brother Chang, there seems to be a human hand bone inside, we need to call the police quickly."

"Could you have seen it wrong?" Chang Xianmin frowned, confusion all over his face. "Let’s go over and have another look, show me where it is."

Gao Yuelan hesitated, but with Chang Xianmin boosting her courage, she mustered the strength to step forward, tightly holding onto Chang Xianmin’s arm, her lips and teeth trembling: "I really saw it just now."

"If you’re scared, wait here, I’ll go and look." Chang Xianmin said, "It’s possible you just imagined it. Let me check first. If it’s there, we’ll call the police. If not, you can come and look again."

"Alright." Gao Yuelan quickly nodded. She definitely didn’t want to see it a second time, even though it was possible she imagined it, the sensation she felt earlier was all too real.

She let go of Chang Xianmin, watching his quick steps away, feeling inexplicably chilly around her.

"Lanlan, I told you, you saw it wrong. There’s nothing resembling a hand bone here, just some branches." Chang Xianmin pointed to some branches collected from the ground. "In the past, this place was divided with one side for raising pigs and the other for storing firewood."

"If you don’t believe it, come take a look. I’ll put the branches back where they were. You probably mistook them for the branches. You’ve been on the road too long, you’re probably just dizzy."

"Really nothing there?" Gao Yuelan asked, still a bit uncertain, standing on tiptoe to take a peek, but she couldn’t see much from this angle. She could, however, see that Chang Xianmin did indeed hold a branch the length of a hand bone.

Could it really have been a hallucination?

She watched Chang Xianmin with a smile, walked over, and saw him standing by the overturned soil and stone slabs, with no hand bone in sight.

Chang Xianmin replaced the branch, "It was like this when I got here."

"Alright then." Gao Yuelan sighed in relief, "You really scared me. I must have seen it wrong."

Brother Chang surely wouldn’t lie to her; it was just her mistake.

"You must be exhausted. Go rest; I’ll clean up." Chang Xianmin said with a reassuring pat on her, "We need to bring someone here tomorrow to fix up this place. A house needs occupants to stay intact; just living once or twice a year makes it prone to damage."

"Why not rebuild it? It seems too old." Gao Yuelan asked.

Chang Xianmin said, "Old houses shouldn’t be altered casually; there’s a reason for it. Without guidance from wise people, building a new house could either turn things better or bring disaster. During my early days, my old house was like this, so prudently, people advised keeping the original structure. Just some repairs to prevent collapse, without altering the layout."

Gao Yuelan had vaguely heard such stories before and believed them.

After the earlier fright, she really had no energy to clean and just sat with her daughter to play.

However, the scene she witnessed before kept replaying in her mind.

She glanced at the pigsty every now and then, wondering if there really wasn’t a hand bone there?

Should she look again?

Just as she was about to get up, Chang Xianmin returned with a broom from the house. She decided against it, fearing it would seem like she didn’t trust Brother Chang.

When evening came, and after dining which Chang Xianmin prepared, her mind was still preoccupied with that matter.

At bedtime, though she lay with eyes closed for two hours, sleep eluded Gao Yuelan.

Suddenly she opened her eyes; should she go check once more?

Just a glance, else she’d never rest.

Besides, needing to go to the toilet which was by the pigsty, these basic accommodations of the old house were indeed insufficient. She nudged Chang Xianmin beside her: "Brother Chang, I need to go to the bathroom, are you asleep?"

Chang Xianmin grunted, evidently not intending to wake. Once asleep, waking him was nearly impossible unless something major occurred.

"Sleep on, I’ll go myself."

As it was, she intended to go see for herself.

Holding a flashlight, Gao Yuelan sighed at the spot of interest, deciding against it, for it was too terrifying. She turned back indoors, sleep overtaking her quickly.

In an unknown span of time, she startled awake, nervously reaching beside her only to discover no one there, so she got up.

Brother Chang, gone to the toilet?

Compelled by an inexplicable feeling, she ventured out quietly.

Upon exiting, what met her eyes was an active Chang Xianmin in the pigsty, holding a bone. Sensing her gaze, he glanced her way with a smile, casually tossing the bone aside, and moved towards her.

"Don’t be afraid, I only worried about frightening you, so doing this task by night was my thought."

Gao Yuelan shivered in his embrace.

If she believed that, she’d be no different than a fool.

"Lanlan, you don’t trust me?" Chang Xianmin gripped her throat lightly, "You were asleep, why get up? We’ve been married over ten years, lived happily. I’ve given you whatever you wanted, yet why your curiosity overwhelms all? I even quite like you, but there’s no keeping you now."

"No, I believe you, Brother Chang, I believe you." Sensing his murderous intent, Gao Yuelan knew she had to believe if she hoped for any chance.

Yet Chang Xianmin no longer planned to spare her.

"I think dead men tell no tales. With you catching me, who knows what lies ahead." Chang Xianmin dragged Gao Yuelan into the house, squeezing her throat with force. She wanted to cry, to resist, but couldn’t muster strength.

Since Chang Xianmin grabbed her, resistance was lost.

Assuming her end was near, Gao Yuelan struggled for breath.

The old house, secluded and far from the village, meant even her loudest cries would go unheard.

At this moment, the door creaked open unnaturally, accompanied by strange noises. In the dark, she widened her eyes, unable to tell if the wind was to blame.

Wind swept across her face, she felt.

"Aah!"

Chang Xianmin cried, falling aside, his grip on her neck loosened.

Slumping down, she coughed vigorously, attempting to call for help but no voice emerged. Hastily, she flicked the light switch, flooding the room with brightness.

Seeing the scene before her, Gao Yuelan forgot all about calling for police assistance.

Chang Xianmin lay curled on the floor. Beside him stood a White Bone, rhythmically tapping his head, eliciting muffled groans. His attempts to resist thwarted, the White Bone kicked his belly causing howls of pain.

Ah Chen, noticing Gao Yuelan’s dumbfounded state, pointed to her phone.

Standing there in shock, better call the police quickly.

The sooner one wraps up matters, the sooner one leaves; reassembling atop this White Bone proves rather taxing.
