Single Spell Sorcerer-Chapter 119: Quest Complete
Chapter 119: Quest Complete
Gemma floated back out of the realm designated for the workers within the Celestial Express, her well-shaped body turning back to a shapeless wisp as she did. She landed next to Jax, who sat around a table in a tavern with other members of his party.
"Well?" Jax asked, looking up from his plate of roasted meat.
"It’s the same," Gemma said, her voice carrying a note of frustration. "There’s nothing in the records. I have no idea who that old man was."
Jax sighed. He’d been hoping for answers, but deep down he’d expected this response.
Ning took a large bite of leg meat and spoke. "Tell us more about this guy. You said you’ve fought him three times now?"
Jax nodded. "He’s appeared out of nowhere each time. The first time was months ago. I was hunting alone when he came out of nowhere, just like today. He tried to attack me, but ended up dying after slipping into his own axe."
"Are you sure he died?" Melayne interrupted, "He was just attacking us."
"That’s the thing," Jax continued. "I thought he was dead. His head split open back then. But then he showed up again during my trial fight, tried to interfere. Same scars, same wild look in his eyes, same bloodlust directed at me specifically."
"And now, today makes three? Any idea why he’s targeting you?"
"None whatsoever," Jax said, frustration clear in his voice. "He doesn’t say much each time, only that he wants me dead."
The table fell quiet for a moment as they all considered the implications.
"That was impressive work back there, Lucille," Melayne said, breaking the silence. "Your spell activated so quickly. Was that random luck?"
"There was no spell," Lucille replied calmly, cutting her food into precise pieces. "It was a telekinetic skill"
Ning paused and turned around. "Telekinesis isn’t a spell?"
"It is, but I’m not using Telekinesis," Lucille explained, her tone patient. "The Skill I’m using is called Navi Manipulation. I use Navi to control things."
Ning mulled over those words. "Navi is so similar in how it works. I wonder if Dinagonus based it on Qi."
Lucille turned to Ning with a curious look. It was the first time she seemed to have no idea what someone was talking about.
Jax leaned forward, interested. "Can you teach me that? The Navi Manipulation skill."
Lucille considered this for a moment. "I can, but only after we leave the forest. I don’t want us staying here–"
"Deal," Jax said without hesitation. "I’ll do my best to complete my Quest as quickly as possible."
The group finished their meal quickly after that, the conversation turning to lighter topics. As they prepared to leave, Jax turned to Melayne.
"Will you join us tomorrow?"
Melayne shook her head. "I’m close to being done with my quest. Just a few more days of work and I’ll have everything I need."
Jax nodded. "I’ll look forward to the day then. Good luck."
They all went back to their respective quarters, the mystery of the scarred man having never been explained once again.
While the rest of her party continued hunting Monsters and growing stronger, Melayne spent the next week and a half working as hard as she could. Her hands moved with practiced efficiency as she crafted weapon after weapon, armor piece after armor piece. The rhythmic hammering of metal became her daily music.
Each opal stone she collected brought her closer to her goal. She worked from dawn until well past dusk, taking only brief breaks to eat and rest. She smelled of nothing but rust and soot at the end of each day.
Finally, on a bright morning thirteen days later, Melayne counted her opal stones one final time. Two thousand five hundred exactly. She had done it.
Her excitement was barely contained as she made her way deeper into the smithy where a large iron door lay. She knocked on it loudly and the door opened on its own.
Melayne stepped inside.
"I’m done with my Quest," she announced, trying to keep her voice steady. "I’ve gathered the 2500 Stones."
No one stood before her in the empty dark hall, but a voice came from inside still. A child’s voice.
"Every single one?" the Iron Hermit asked.
"Every single one," Melayne confirmed, producing a large pouch that clinked heavily as she laid it down before her.
A figure appeared from the shadows, covered from head to toe in armor that completely obscured his figure. He arrived next to the stones and took it. He didn’t even count it and yet he seemed to know she had succeeded.
The hermit was half the size of Melayne.
"Come on inside," the hermit said, walking back into the shadows.
Hearing a child’s voice come out of who she knew to be an adult gave Melayne a weird feeling. She followed him inside and arrived at a room that had been prepared for something similar.
This room contained a magic circle that could tell when she was lying.
Melayne sat, her heart racing with fear despite having done nothing wrong.
"How did you come by these stones?" the Hermit asked.
"Through selling items I created all on my own," Melayne answered truthfully. "Weapons, armor, tools. Every last one of the stones was paid for something I made."
The hermit remained in the shadows. "Did you fully stick to the rule I gave you?" he asked.
"Yes," Melayne said.
The room went silent after that. The hermit didn’t speak again for sometime, making Melayne feel concerned. Had he perhaps found out about Jax commissioning her for the sake of the quest? Was that perhaps a bad thing?
Something appeared before her right at that moment.
A scroll.
Melayne’s hands trembled slightly as she reached for the scroll. She unfurled it carefully, and read through the script that she should not have been able to read. The understanding of the Spell she was about to learn came to her mind, asking her if she wanted to learn it.
Melayne accepted.
The scroll disappeared in a flash of light and the Spell embedded itself into Melayne.
Melayne quickly opened her status page and searched for the spell. And there it was, her reward for months of hard work. Her new spell.
