Chapter 126: The Healing Wine

After Lucille left, Ning turned to Jax. "Let’s go see this Wine Hermit. I want to purchase something myself. Let’s see if I can get a quest myself."

Jax and Ning arrived at the Wine Hermit’s shop, where Jax first sold all the items he had gathered that day.

"Oh!" the child-like voice shouted in excitement. "You’ve brought me the Gorgon’s eyes. I haven’t had one in a few months. Thank you, young man."

"You’re welcome," Jax said.

Ning looked at the person behind the screen. "Are you a child?" he asked.

Jax’s eyes widened at the question. He hadn’t seen anyone ask that to a hermit directly. Everyone questioned these things to themselves and with others in private, but no one dared do it in their presence.

"What makes you say that, young man?" the Wine Hermit asked.

"Your voice," Ning said.

"Hahaha!" the hermit laughed. "I may sound young, but trust me, I am much older than you can ever imagine"

Ning chuckled along. "You will find that I can imagine so much more."

The Hermit paused for a moment. "Have you come here to ask about my voice?"

"No, my friend here needs something for his broken arm," Ning said.

"Broken arm?" the hermit asked. "Did you end up breaking your arm, young man?"

"Yes," Jax said. "The damn Gorgon was much stronger than I could’ve imagined. "I need something to speed up the healing."

The Hermit disappeared into his back room and returned with a bottle of amber liquid. "Here. This is my healing wine. Drink however much you need to heal. You can save some for later too. You can use as much or as little as you want."

Jax took the liquid and opened the stopper to smell. A pungent smell prickled his nose enough to make him want to sneeze.

"This stuff heals?" Jax asked.

"Medicines are always bitter, my young man," the Hermit said. "Has no one taught you that?"

Jax said nothing. "How much for this?" he asked.

The hermit shuffled around a bit in the back before coming out with a bunch of Opal stones. "40 Opal stones for everything you’ve brought here today, minus 22 Opal stones for the wine. You get pain in return."

’So expensive,’ Jax thought. But, it was worth it. He could earn more than that in the 2 days he would gain from this wine.

Jax nodded and took the stones. "Thank you, sir Wine."

"Always a pleasure, my young man. Do say, how far are you from getting that flower?" the man asked.

"I search for the lake every day. Should I find it, the first thing I’ll do is get that flower," Jax said.

"Should I get you something as well?" Ning asked. "Just let me know."

"Oh, can you bring me the flower too?" the hermit asked.

Ning paused. "Are there more flowers than just the one?" he asked.

"A single flower per day at best," Jax told him. "It only grows in the lake where the Lakeborn Monkey lives."

"I see. In that case if we are to fight the monkey a second time, I should bring it back to you," Ning told the hermit.

Jax paused. That wasn’t a good idea at all. Finding the monkey once was a torture. Finding it twice was damn near asking to fail.

"I only need the one," the hermit said, simply rejecting Ning’s proposal.

Ning sighed. It appeared he wasn’t going to get his quest from this hermit.

Jax thanked the hermit and the two of them returned.

Back at the tavern, Ning watched as Jax opened the bottle of wine, winced at its smell, and then brace himself as he took a generous swig.

The effect was immediate and overwhelming. The taste was the last thing Jax cared about right now. Warmth flooded through Jax’s body, racing along his bones and settling in his broken arm with an intensity that made him gasp.

The warmth was anything but gentle. It was a raging fire that began to tear him apart from the inside.

"What—" Jax doubled over, clutching his arm as waves of pain crashed over him.

"Jax!" Ning panicked. "What’s happening?"

"I don’t know," Jax said, grunting. "My arm is healing, but it’s doing something more."

Ning didn’t know what to do. "Hold on, I’ll go get the hermit," he said and ran out of the tavern.

Jax remained in place, clutching onto his arm. The fire within him was enough to make him think that his arm was charred by now. He didn’t know how long it had been when someone arrived at his table and raised his head.

He saw Melayne look at him.

"You idiot! How much did you drink?"

Jax failed to understand the question at first. But then, he pointed the bottle to the side. A fourth of the wine was gone..

"So much at once?" Melayne grabbed the bottle and examined it. "The Wine Hermit’s wines are better than potions. You should know that by now. Why did you drink so much!"

Jax gritted his teeth against the pain, unable to answer.

"Don’t speak," Melayne said. "Nothing bad is going to happen. What should take 2 days to heal is going to happen in a matter of minutes. Only, you are going to feel every instance of pain you should have felt in those 2 days, all at once."

She was right. Despite the agony coursing through him, Jax could feel his bones knitting back together at an alarming rate. The pain was intense, but the feeling of his broken arm fixing itself was more than enough for him to struggle through it.

After what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, the pain subsided. Jax slowly stood up from the table that was now soaking in his sweat. He reached for his arm slowly, feeling the bones, searching for pain.

There was none.

He carefully removed the sling from his left arm and flexed his fingers. To his amazement, the arm felt better than it had before the injury. It felt stronger, and more responsive. ƒгeewebnovёl_com

"Incredible," he murmured, moving his shoulder. Not a single instance of pain remained.
