Chapter 57: Through the Maze

Jax took two left turns and two right turns, and still, he arrived nowhere. He was confused about where exactly he was supposed to go. He understood that arriving at a boss room within the Maze took time, but now that he was actually in the Maze, he realized just how much he actually had to walk.

He continued walking still, since that was the only thing he could do. As he walked, he saw another junction in the path, leading to the left and right. Another choice for him to make that would lead him nowhere at all.

However, as he got close to it, something happened.

The ground shook around him a little, making him stop. The walls around him swayed just a little, confusing him quite a bit as to just what was happening.

Then, the walls suddenly moved. As though they were water, a wave passed through them, the origin of which he could not see. The wave continued up to the junction, where reality itself seemed to wobble for a moment.

Then, from that wobble emerged walls of the Maze that covered the two paths on either side. Instead, a new path emerged straight ahead, the wave passing beyond what he could see in the distance.

Jax paused for a long moment, trying to take in what had happened. He slowly nodded to himself, remembering what he had read about the Maze.

Part of the reason why the Maze was unending was apparently because it kept on changing every so often, altering all the possible pathways so that no one could remember which way was back.

Jax wondered if he was close to some boss, which was why the wave had suddenly appeared. But then, he accepted that it was probably just something random.

So, he continued on.

More lefts, rights, and straight paths awaited him. Surprisingly, there were no dead ends yet. The dead ends were apparently where the bosses were located, so there had to be a few.

Jax opened his status and looked at the timer inside. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he realized over two hours had already passed.

Two hours, and all he had done was walk.

"Where the hell is anything?" he couldn’t help but ask in frustration.

Just as he continued, he stopped as he finally noticed something other than the unending walls of the Maze.

It was another person.

A young woman with a spear in hand stopped before him at the crossroads, looking at Jax to her right.

Jax had arrived at the crossroads as well and looked at her. Seeing the woman hold the spear tighter, Jax tightened his grip on his axe as well.

Meetings in the Maze sometimes led to deaths. Jax wondered if he was going to fight right now. The truth was, he didn’t want to.

"Do you want to fight?" he asked the woman.

The woman stared at Jax strangely before slowly shaking her head.

"Me neither," Jax said. "So why don’t we both head separate ways?"

"Sure. You leave first," she said, her posture still cautious.

Jax nodded.

He walked to the side, holding his axe ready for battle. He watched the woman carefully, seeing every small movement she made.

His Body Fortification Skill was already active and ready for the battle should one come.

Thankfully, the woman truly seemed to have been telling the truth. She did not want to fight, and thus she did not attack. She simply watched as Jax walked into the path straight ahead of her, and once he was far enough, she walked to the left, running away.

Jax sighed in relief. That had been rather stressful.

He didn’t know just how strong someone else in the Maze was, so he didn’t want to fight carelessly. Especially not when he needed to find a boss first.

Wasting his energy needlessly and likely getting injured in the process was not a good idea at all.

Jax continued walking now that the woman was gone and made his way through more pathways in the Maze until he finally arrived at some place that wasn’t the same as everywhere.

He heard the sound before he saw it. He could hear some noise, although not very clearly, so he wasn’t sure exactly what he was hearing. So, he ran toward it, turning right up ahead since that was the only turn he could make.

As Jax turned, he arrived at a massive section of the Maze, nearly 100 feet wide, with a monster inside of it. The monster was a green snake, nearly 50 feet long and 3 feet wide.

And it wasn’t alone.

There were two people in that area at that moment, a man and a woman—a party of two. And they were fighting this snake.

Jax didn’t recognize the snake at all. If he had read about it before, he didn’t remember it. He couldn’t even tell what stage this beast was supposed to be at.

However, what he could say was that the two people in the boss’s room were having a rather difficult time with it. Victory wasn’t certain for them just yet.

The man used a longsword, while the woman was a sorcerer, holding a staff to use her spells. There was frost on the side of the snake, and it seemed to come from the woman.

Jax stood there for a moment and watched the battle. The man weaved through the snake’s attacks, keeping its attention on himself while doing his best to give his companion a chance to attack.

They were struggling, but they were wounding the snake, so they were more or less successful.

Jax took a step back, naturally not wanting to be seen or attacked by these two when he was alone. As he was about to leave, however, he saw the thing he had come here for.

The ticket.

High in the sky, nearly 40 feet in the air, was an illusory rectangular card that was a simple green color with two items drawn inside of it.

Stars.

This was a Two-Star ticket.
