Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 11: He Will Marry Her as Promised
For the next two days, Ethan Yardley didn’t come home.
Every day, Serena Yardley was left alone in the empty house. She ate alone and went to school alone.
Final exams were just around the corner, and all the students were busy studying. But every time Serena Yardley sat at her desk in her dorm room, her mind was completely filled with thoughts of her Uncle.
’What is he doing? When he’s with Sylvia Schuyler, is he just as good to her?’
’I wonder if they’ve been intimate.’
’I wonder if he ever thinks about me, even for a second.’
Serena Yardley couldn’t bring herself to study. She would just stare at her textbooks, her mind elsewhere.
Her roommates tried talking to her several times, but she didn’t even hear them.
"Hey, Serena, what are you thinking about? Come on, let’s go eat."
Kylie Cross called out.
Serena Yardley snapped out of her daze and looked at Kylie Cross, forcing a smile. "I’m not hungry yet. You guys go on ahead."
"What’s with you these last couple of days? You’ve been completely out of it, like you just got your heart broken. Are you all right?"
Serena Yardley quickly shook her head. "I’m fine. It’s just... with exams coming up, the pressure’s getting to me a little."
"All right, then. Try not to overthink it. If you don’t do well, you can just take the re-sit. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Well, we’re off to eat."
"Okay." 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
Serena Yardley nodded. After watching her roommates leave, she picked up her phone and glanced at the time: six in the evening.
’It’s Tuesday. Uncle should be done with work by now.’
’Is he on his way to the hospital again?’
After a moment of hesitation, Serena Yardley dialed Ethan Yardley’s number.
After waiting a long moment, the call connected. Serena Yardley’s face lit up as she cried out, "Uncle..."
But the person on the other end of the line didn’t answer her.
Serena Yardley tried again. "Uncle, are you busy?"
Again, there was no reply. A second later, the line went dead.
Listening to the BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... of the disconnected line, Serena Yardley stared dejectedly at her phone screen for a long time.
’Why didn’t Uncle talk to me?’
’Before, no matter how busy he was, he would always answer my calls. He’d give me a quick explanation before getting back to his work.’
’But this time, he didn’t say a single word.’
The thought that she hadn’t seen her Uncle in three whole days was unbearable. Serena Yardley couldn’t stop herself from wanting to see him, to be near him.
She stood up, grabbed her coat, and walked out of the dormitory.
「The Hospital」
In the VIP hospital room, Sylvia Schuyler quickly put Ethan Yardley’s charging phone back where she found it, deleting the call log while she was at it.
She leaned back against the headboard, hardly able to believe she could see again.
’I can’t believe my sight returned so quickly.’
Suddenly, she heard a noise at the door. Sylvia Schuyler continued her act, pretending to be blind as she perked up her ears and asked, "Ethan, are you back?"
"Yeah."
Ethan Yardley came forward carrying a bag of fruit and set it down. Just as he was about to peel an orange for Sylvia Schuyler, she suddenly grabbed at him frantically.
"Ethan, I’ve been cooped up in this bed for days. My whole body feels stiff. Can you help me walk outside for some fresh air? Please?"
Ethan Yardley explained, "You can’t move your leg yet. If you want to go out, you’ll have to use a wheelchair."
"I don’t want to use a wheelchair. If I start depending on it, I’ll never get off it. You can just support me. I’ll be fine with crutches. Besides, it’s just a fracture, my leg isn’t completely broken."
Ethan Yardley had no choice but to agree. "All right."
He brought the nearby crutches over for Sylvia Schuyler and helped support her as they headed outside, completely forgetting about his phone, which was still charging.
With Ethan Yardley’s help, Sylvia Schuyler made her way out of the inpatient building and toward a secluded part of the hospital garden.
Remembering the call from Serena Yardley just moments before, she couldn’t resist asking Ethan Yardley,
"Ethan, how are you planning to get justice for me?"
Ethan Yardley had already forgotten all about it.
For a moment, he didn’t realize what Sylvia Schuyler was talking about. "Justice for what?"
Sylvia Schuyler’s anger flared at his question. She abruptly stopped walking and said,
"I told you, Serena Yardley was the one who pushed me down the stairs! I can’t see a thing, and it’s a struggle just to walk. Aren’t you going to make her pay for what she did?"
Ethan Yardley’s handsome face remained impassive, his voice cold. "I’ve already dealt with her. Don’t worry."
"Oh? And what did you do to her?"
"I made her stay in her room to reflect on her actions, denied her food for three days, and cut off her allowance for a month."
Sylvia Schuyler was speechless.
’That’s it?’
Resentment building inside her, Sylvia Schuyler demanded, "Do you really need her to give you a child? Can’t you just divorce her right now?"
Ethan Yardley’s lips thinned into a tight line, his patience clearly wearing thin.
"We can drop the idea of her having my child, but divorcing her now would be unfair. I need to find the right time to discuss it with her."
Sylvia Schuyler grew frantic. "What’s unfair about it? Your marriage was a sham from the start! Just give her some money as compensation. Unless..."
"Sylvia, we agreed to two years, and it will be two years. I will marry you as promised when the time comes, but until then, I’m the one in charge."
"By that logic, I could just give you money as compensation, too. Would you want that?"
He shot back, his tone leaving no room for debate.
Sylvia Schuyler was struck silent.
The powerful aura radiating from him, that air of looking down on everyone and everything, stopped her from pushing any further.
She knew that, more than anything, Ethan Yardley hated being told what to do.
She didn’t dare to overstep again, knowing it would only backfire.
Leaning on her crutches, Sylvia Schuyler started walking forward again. Suddenly, she spotted a familiar, petite figure in the distance walking toward them—it was Serena Yardley.
Her expression shifted instantly. She pretended to accidentally drop her crutches and threw herself at Ethan Yardley, grabbing onto him.
Ethan Yardley instinctively caught her. "Are you all right?"
"Ethan, my head suddenly hurts so much... I feel awful."
"I’ll help you back to your room, then."
"Ethan, my leg hurts too... It hurts so much, Ethan..."
Sylvia Schuyler went limp, making it clear she wasn’t going to move on her own.
At a moment like this, Ethan Yardley had no choice but to scoop her up into his arms. "I’ll carry you back."
As he carried Sylvia Schuyler away, Ethan Yardley never noticed Serena Yardley standing just a short distance away.
But Serena Yardley saw it all—she watched Ethan Yardley carry Sylvia Schuyler back into the inpatient building.
She stood there, frozen stiff, a pain seizing her chest as if thousands of ants were gnawing away at her heart.
’So that’s how he holds other women.’
’So he lied to me.’
’Sylvia Schuyler is attractive. Uncle must like her, deep down.’
’Otherwise, why would a man as powerful and aloof as him be forced to marry her for any other reason?’
’In the end, her Uncle was no longer hers alone.’
Serena Yardley suddenly felt her world go dark, so dark she couldn’t see her hand in front of her face.
She reached out, trying to grasp the one man who was the light of her world, but he just walked further and further away. No matter how she reached for him, she could never catch him.
She didn’t have the courage to take another step.
She was afraid that if she followed them to the room, she would only see something else that would push her to the breaking point.
She turned around, her eyes red-rimmed, and walked away from the hospital, completely crestfallen.
After carrying Sylvia Schuyler back to her room, Ethan Yardley called a doctor to examine her, then stood to the side, phone in hand.
He realized he hadn’t contacted the one at home for two days, and he had to admit he missed her a little.
Just as he was about to step out of the room with his phone, Sylvia Schuyler called out to him again, her voice fraught with emotion.
"Ethan, don’t leave me! I’m scared! Ethan, where are you? Please, come stay by my side, okay?"
With no other choice, Ethan Yardley put his phone away and walked back to Sylvia Schuyler’s side.
