Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 145: Ethan Yardley, Are You Sure?
’Get rid of the child?’
’How could his mind change so quickly?’
Serena Yardley was suddenly in a daze, completely at a loss.
Ethan Yardley looked at her. "It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have gotten you pregnant without your consent. If you don’t want to have the baby now, we’ll go get an abortion."
He knew this was cruel to her.
It would break her heart and harm her body.
But what could he do? He couldn’t forgive his own monstrous behavior.
"Then go arrange it!"
Serena Yardley choked out the words. As she lowered her head and shoveled rice into her mouth, unbidden tears welled in her eyes.
She wanted to pretend she didn’t care.
But she just couldn’t control her emotions.
’Her baby...’
She had just managed to convince herself to accept this, to look forward to its arrival. She’d even picked out so many toys and clothes for the baby online.
And now this man was telling her she could get an abortion if she didn’t want it.
’Back when I didn’t want the baby, why didn’t he let me get an abortion then?’
’Since he doesn’t seem to care that much, maybe the child wouldn’t be happy after it was born anyway. In that case, I’ll do as he wishes.’
"Serena..."
Ethan Yardley watched her hide her anguish by focusing on her food, and his heart felt like it was being twisted by a knife.
"Just let me know once you’ve made the arrangements. I’m not feeling well. I’m going to my room to rest."
Unable to contain her emotions any longer, Serena Yardley shot up, pushed back her chair, and hurried upstairs.
Ethan Yardley watched her retreating figure, a lump forming in his throat.
He put down his utensils, stood up, and told Mrs. Miller to clear the table.
Mrs. Miller looked at the table, laden with food that had barely been touched. She couldn’t understand what was wrong with Mr. Yardley and Miss Serena again, why neither of them wanted to eat.
Ethan Yardley sat in the living room for a moment before taking out his phone to call the hospital.
He told them to schedule an abortion for the next day.
Just as he hung up, Ethan Yardley saw the screen light up with an incoming call.
It was a call from the manor.
He answered the call, and Master Yardley’s hearty, cheerful laughter came through the line:
"Ethan, my boy! Bring your wife over tonight. We’re all having a family dinner together."
With a great-grandchild on the way, Master Yardley was so delighted that he was personally calling his grandson back to the manor.
His grandson’s wife had done him proud; he had to prepare a grand gift for her.
A shadow crossed Ethan Yardley’s handsome face. His voice was low. "Grandpa, let’s go in a few days. We’re a little tied up right now."
"I knew you’d try to make excuses, that’s why I called you myself. No matter how busy you are, you have to bring Serena over. It’s just one meal. It won’t interrupt the happy life you two lovebirds have."
Master Yardley admonished.
Ethan Yardley didn’t argue further and ended the call.
After a long moment, he finally got up and went upstairs.
Serena Yardley was crouched on the carpet by the bed, fighting to control her emotions. ’Don’t cry,’ she told herself.
’Isn’t this what I wanted before?’
’Since he’s agreed to terminate it, what is there to hold on to?’
’It’s just...’
Lowering her head, Serena Yardley placed a hand on her stomach. She didn’t know why, but her heart ached.
’Is it because I’m reluctant to let go?’
’Or is it because I feel like that man doesn’t really love me that much after all?’
’Two abortions in six months... that would be incredibly damaging for any woman.’
At that moment, a magnetic, masculine voice sounded from behind her. "Serena..."
Serena Yardley quickly masked the grief on her face. She took a deep breath, stood up, and forced a smile as she asked him:
"Have you arranged the hospital? Let’s go. The sooner it’s done, the better."
Her gaze wavered as she tried to walk past him.
Ethan Yardley reached out and caught her arm. "No. The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. For now, go change your clothes. We’re going to the manor."
Serena Yardley was in a daze again, her mind stuck on his words. ’The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.’
’Tomorrow? So soon?’
’I came home, didn’t I? I reached out to him, called him. How could he not see that I actually want to build a life with him, to have our child?’
’How could he not understand me?’
Realizing she was about to get emotional again, Serena Yardley fought to compose herself and said, "Oh. Then I’ll go get changed."
Ethan Yardley released his grip and watched her walk into the closet.
He turned his head, his gaze falling upon the large bed.
’It was on this very bed that he had violated another woman.’
’It was in this room that he, Ethan Yardley, had done something monstrous.’
’He couldn’t forgive himself for what he’d done. How could he possibly hope for the woman he loved to forgive him, to keep the child and spend the rest of her life with him?’
’He wasn’t worthy.’
Once Serena had changed, and before they left for Yardley Manor, Ethan Yardley instructed Yannick Young to go to The Sovereign Villa and replace the bed in the master bedroom.
Changing the bed couldn’t erase what he’d done, but at least it might restore a sliver of dignity for Serena.
In the car, Serena Yardley sat beside Ethan Yardley, too upset to speak.
But she sensed something was off with the man beside her, too.
She turned to look at him.
His handsome, well-defined features were completely devoid of expression. It was clear he was deeply unhappy.
Serena Yardley thought, ’Is he only unhappy because he’s finally giving me what I wanted? Because I’d fought with him so much, he’d finally relented, and now he’s miserable about terminating the pregnancy?’
Thinking that might be the case, Serena Yardley spoke up. "Ethan..."
"I’m here."
He turned to her, his voice as gentle as always.
Serena Yardley lowered her gaze and asked,
"Are you really sure about this? About me having an abortion."
Ethan Yardley avoided her gaze. "I’ve thought about it a lot. You’re still young, and you’re still in school. I should respect your wishes."
"And what if I said I’ve changed my mind?"
She looked up at him.
But he couldn’t bring himself to meet her beautiful eyes, replying ambiguously, "Serena, I’m so sorry. I’m the one who’s made you suffer."
"So what are you saying now?"
Serena Yardley was confused.
Ethan Yardley felt a crushing weight in his chest, as if a boulder were pressing down on him, making it hard to breathe.
"Let’s just get to the manor first. We can talk about the baby tomorrow."
’His mind was a mess. He needed time to think.’
Seeing his strange attitude, Serena Yardley didn’t press him further.
But his reaction sparked feelings of guilt and self-blame within her.
’She felt it was her fault. She’d been too difficult, testing his patience until it ran out. Now he was done putting up with her.’ 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Though there was much more she wanted to say, she held her tongue.
The pair arrived at Yardley Manor in the evening. Dinner was already prepared, and a large circle of people was waiting for the young couple.
Rows of servants stood at the entrance, bowing in unison and calling out:
"Welcome home, Young Master, Young Madam."
Serena Yardley maintained a forced, shallow smile as she followed Ethan Yardley into the castle-like manor and entered the magnificent, spacious dining room.
Seated in the dining room were Master Yardley, Mason Yardley, Sophia Quinn, and several aunts and uncles.
The children were likely all away at school, as none were present.
Serena Yardley and Ethan Yardley went forward to greet their elders one by one. A servant pulled out their chairs, and the couple then sat down beside his parents.
Everyone at the large table was beaming.
Master Yardley, in particular, smiled and gestured to Serena Yardley:
"Come now, Ethan’s bride, stand up and let Grandpa have a look at you."
Serena Yardley obediently rose and walked to Master Yardley’s side.
She was wearing a light, summery, pale blue maxi dress that accentuated her slender figure. A gray knit headband held her shoulder-length, wavy hair back from her ears, revealing a perfect, youthful face.
Her features were so soft and animated that it was a joy just to look at her.
It was because she was so sweet and lovely, with a charm that everyone adored and a complete lack of malice, that no one in this family cared about her background.
They all treated her with genuine affection.
Master Yardley sized her up and said with satisfaction:
"I can’t see anything yet, but if Sophia says it’s so, then it must be true.
Grandpa promised you a hundred million for each child, and while this one isn’t born yet, I’m giving it to you in advance. When the baby is born, Grandpa will have another grand gift waiting for you."
As he spoke, Master Yardley presented Serena Yardley with a check for one hundred million.
