Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 157: She Left, She Came
Serena went home and slept for five hours.
She woke up at five in the afternoon.
Ethan had been waiting in the room. He hadn’t gone to the office or dealt with Quinn Gardner.
He was worried that if Serena woke up and couldn’t find Nina, she would get upset.
Sitting up, she saw Ethan on a beanbag chair on the balcony. She stretched lazily and asked,
"Why are you still here? Didn’t you go to work today?"
Since Nina was getting a divorce, she had taken time off from school to spend more time with her and Leo.
Ethan closed his book and stood up.
"I didn’t."
He walked over to the bed and asked, "Are you awake? Want to get up and grab a bite to eat?"
Serena shook her head and looked around for her phone. "I’ll ask Nina if she’s picked up Leo yet. I can eat over at her place."
Just as she found her phone and was about to dial, Ethan said, "Nina has already left."
"Huh?"
Serena furrowed her brow and looked up at the man beside the bed, as if she hadn’t understood him.
Ethan patiently explained, "You thought Nina was fine with the divorce, but she was more heartbroken than anyone.
She probably didn’t want you to know how much pain she was in, and she didn’t want to see how sad you’d be saying goodbye. So she took Leo and left while you were asleep.
She took my private jet."
Serena was stunned into silence.
’What is he talking about? I don’t understand a word.’
’Nina just got divorced today. How could she possibly leave already?’
’She said she was going to cook a few more meals for me. There’s no way she would just sneak away while I was sleeping.’
Disbelieving, Serena scrambled out of bed, put on her shoes, and tried to leave.
Ethan reached out and pulled her into an embrace.
"Serena, calm down. Nina is really gone."
He took out his phone, pulled up a voice message Nina had recorded earlier, and played it for her.
As she listened to Nina’s voice message, Serena fell silent.
"Serena, by the time you hear this, I’ll already be gone with Leo.
I know I shouldn’t have left without telling you, but I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to bear it if you saw me off. I was afraid I’d hesitate, or worse, give in to Quinn.
You know, I really did love Quinn. When I came back to marry him, I thought I would be the happiest woman in the world.
I could even picture it, how happy our future would be—the three of us, him, me, and Leo.
But I never imagined his proposal was all a lie.
Serena, I’m in so much pain, but I don’t want you to see me so defeated and pathetic, crying my eyes out.
Thankfully, it’s all over. I’m gone now, so you have to take care of yourself. Don’t contact me for a while; let me have some time alone to clear my head.
I’m sorry, Serena. Please don’t be mad at me for leaving without a word. I hope that when we meet again, we can still be family to each other."
When the message ended, Serena went limp and collapsed onto the bed.
Tears filled her red-rimmed eyes.
’She knew Nina must have been heartbroken.’
’But she never realized she was in this much pain.’
’If I’d known, I never would have supported the divorce.’
’But what now that she’s gone? She’s probably never coming back, is she?’
Overwhelmed with emotion, Serena burst into tears.
"Why? Nina is such a good person! Why did she have to suffer so much? Why did she have to leave? In a city this big, isn’t there any room for her and Leo?"
Ethan sat down beside her and held her tight.
"Quinn didn’t actually make her leave the country," he said. "He just told her to take Leo and go somewhere Mr. and Mrs. Grant couldn’t find them. She’s the one who decided to go abroad to cut all ties with him."
Serena was sobbing uncontrollably, her lips trembling and her voice hoarse.
"Will she ever come back? Do I not have an older sister anymore? Is there no one left who’ll dote on me like she did?"
Hearing her cries, Ethan’s heart ached.
He held her tighter, comforting her. "Of course not. She’s only gone temporarily. Besides, you can go visit her after a while. If you miss her that much right now, you can call Julian and ask how she’s doing.
Julian is with them, so you don’t need to worry."
Hearing that made Serena feel a little better.
She sniffled, pulled away from his embrace, and looked at him with tear-filled eyes.
"I just miss her so much. You know that. Besides you, Nina was the best to me in the whole world. I always thought of her as my real sister."
Ethan cupped her face and wiped away her tears. "Of course I know. Nina is a wonderful person; she just had the misfortune of falling for Quinn."
"So you agree Quinn is a scumbag, right?"
Ethan chuckled. "Ahem. He’s my friend, after all. No matter what kind of person he is, I still have to deal with him."
"Well, the next time I see him, I’m going to kick him for Nina’s sake."
Helpless, Ethan carried her to the bathroom to wash up.
Little did Serena know that Nina, the person who doted on her most, was leaving now to become stronger and more exceptional.
And one day, at a magnificent wedding, she would wear a beautiful white gown and marry the person dearest to Serena Yardley’s heart.
...
After Nina left, Serena felt like she had no one else to talk to.
After moping at home for two days, she returned to school.
It was a busy time, with midterm exams to prepare for.
She spent most of her time on campus, except for weekends.
Today was Friday, and she went to the library after lunch.
Kylie Cross walked beside her, whispering gossip.
"Serena, do you remember when we went camping and ran into Professor Yardley and that older guy, the one with the last name Gardner?"
Without looking up from her textbook, Serena replied, "Mhm, I remember."
"It looks like Cynthia Meyer is with that Gardner guy now. Azure and I saw him drop her off at school last night."
Serena’s head snapped up, and she stared at Kylie.
Afraid of being overheard, Kylie lowered her voice and went on,
"You have no idea. Cynthia is like a whole new person. She’s all dolled up every day, and on weekends, she goes out wearing really sexy outfits."
Serena said nothing.
"Tsk, tsk. That Gardner guy looks pretty old, don’t you think? I wonder if he’s married."
Serena replied nonchalantly, "It’s none of our business. They can do what they want."
’Anyway, Nina already divorced him. It doesn’t matter who he’s with now.’
’I just hope Nina can get over this failed marriage quickly and find her own Prince Charming.’
Just as she was about to go back to her book, her phone rang.
Serena glanced at her phone. It was Ethan.
She quickly stepped away from Kylie to answer the call.
"Another weekend’s gone by," Ethan said over the phone. "You’re finally coming home to me today, right?"
"Okay," Serena replied. "I’ll pack up and be right there."
"Okay. I’m at the school gate."
After hanging up, Serena turned to Kylie. "I’m heading home. I’ll see you around."
"See you Monday."
Serena hurried to the school gate and, making sure no one was watching, quickly slipped into Ethan’s car.
As if possessed by the spirit of a straight-A student, she ignored the man beside her and kept reading as soon as she got in the car.
Ethan reached over and pinched her cheek. "Next time, make sure you come home on time."
"Okaay,"
Serena replied with a pout, her eyes still glued to her textbook. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Seeing how hard she was studying, Ethan couldn’t help but ask, "Serena, what do you want to do after you graduate?"
"I haven’t thought about it. I’ll figure it out after I graduate."
’I have to take a leave of absence to have the baby after this semester. I probably won’t be able to go back to school for at least a year after that.’
’There’s still plenty of time. I can think about it later.’
"You don’t have to work this hard, Serena."
Ethan took her book away and pulled her into his arms. "When you graduate, you can be my secretary. That way, we’ll never have to be apart."
’If we’re not apart, we won’t have to miss each other so much.’
’And I wouldn’t have to leave work early every day just to run around picking her up.’
Serena was surprised. She tilted her head to look at him. "Really?"
"You don’t want to?"
Serena quickly shook her head. "No, no, I want to! If I’m your secretary, I can keep an eye on you all day. Then you won’t have time to go out and mess around, will you?"
Ethan pinched her cheek again. "You make it sound like I go messing around when you’re not here."
"Hee hee, I know you wouldn’t."
Serena gave him an exceptionally sweet smile.
’She trusted Ethan completely in that regard.’
Chatting, the two of them arrived home in no time.
But as they stepped inside, just past the foyer, Ethan’s handsome face instantly soured at the sight of Vivian Lynch sitting in the living room.
