Chapter 3: Chapter 3: She Will Not Get a Divorce

When Serena heard a woman’s voice on the other end, affectionately calling her husband Ethan, she felt like she’d been struck by lightning.

What made it even harder to accept was that the man in front of her replied patiently,

"Okay. I’ll be right there."

Ethan hung up and looked at Serena.

"You should get some sleep. I’m heading out for a bit."

It was a bolt from the blue. Serena simply couldn’t accept it, and a wave of anger washed over her.

"Why? That was a woman on the phone! She said she sprained her ankle, and you’re actually going to go see her?"

Ethan didn’t seem to want to explain. He put his phone away and turned to change his clothes.

Serena followed him, agitated.

"Ethan, what do you mean by this? Who is this Sylvia Schuyler? Is she the woman you brought home this afternoon? What is your relationship with her?"

After changing, Ethan still didn’t offer an explanation. He just raised a hand, patted Serena’s shoulder, and tossed out, "Get some rest."

He turned to leave, but Serena wouldn’t have it. She quickly blocked his path and cried out hoarsely,

"Ethan, don’t you think you owe me an explanation? Why are you leaving me to go see another woman this late at night? What do you take me for?"

’No, it can’t be.’

’He’s such a good person. He’s always been so good to me.’

’He’d never abandon me for another woman.’

Serena tried desperately to convince herself.

But this old man seemed dead set on abandoning her.

Seeing his wife’s angry yet desperate expression, Ethan pursed his thin lips. As reluctant as he was, he spoke.

"Serena, you... need to prepare yourself. In a little while, we’re going to the Civil Affairs Bureau to get a divorce."

With that, he couldn’t bear to look at her heartbreakingly vulnerable face any longer. He pushed her aside, opened the door, and left.

Serena...

It was as if her brain had short-circuited. Everything went blank.

She froze, unable to move, and could only watch as he disappeared before her very eyes.

’What did he say?’

’In a little while... go to the Civil Affairs Bureau... get a divorce?’

’A divorce?’

’Ethan wants to divorce me?’

A sharp pain pierced Serena’s heart. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor, tears streaming from her eyes.

’Why?’

’Hasn’t our marriage been going well?’

’Why does Ethan want to divorce me?’

’Besides, I’m pregnant.’

Serena couldn’t accept this sudden blow. She collapsed against the edge of the bed, sobbing her heart out.

She cried for a long, long time. Then, remembering the baby in her belly, she knew she couldn’t let herself get too upset. She forced herself up, got back into bed, and tried her best to control her emotions.

But she was in so much pain, so heartbroken.

She couldn’t understand how their marriage, which had seemed perfectly fine, had suddenly reached the point of divorce.

Serena couldn’t accept this reality.

’I won’t get a divorce.’

’If not for myself, then for the baby in my belly. I have to fight to protect our rights—mother and child.’

「The next morning.」

Serena washed up and listlessly made her way downstairs.

Seeing that Ethan wasn’t in the dining room, she sat down at the table and asked Mrs. Miller, who was arranging the breakfast dishes.

"Mrs. Miller, did Ethan not come back last night?"

Mrs. Miller sighed and nodded.

"It seems so. Miss Serena, did you argue with the master last night? Why would he leave you alone and go out so late?"

Serena was completely out of it and didn’t have the energy to answer Mrs. Miller.

Hearing that Ethan hadn’t returned all night, her heart went cold.

’So Ethan is really dead set on this divorce?’

’But why?’

’Is it because of that woman he brought home yesterday?’

Serena still couldn’t accept it.

After eating a few bites of food, she left the house and took a taxi back to school.

It was Monday, and as a sophomore in college, her schedule was still quite packed.

Even if her marriage was falling apart, she couldn’t let her studies suffer.

When her classes finally ended that afternoon, Serena stared down at her phone. There was still no message from that old man.

The ache in her chest returned with a sharp pang.

A classmate said to her, "Come on, Serena. Let’s go get dinner at the cafeteria."

Serena put her phone away, stood up, and followed her classmate out.

They were halfway there when another female student ran up and stood in front of her.

"Excuse me, are you Serena Yardley?"

Serena looked at her, a bit confused, but still confirmed,

"I am. Can I help you?"

The student said, "There’s someone at the school gate looking for you. They said to go over right away."
