Sleeping With The CEO-Chapter 293: One More
Chapter 293: One More
Emily had to admit that the day before had been pretty eventful for her. From suddenly getting the email from HR telling her that she needed to come in to handle some stuff. To seeing Derek again. Not only had she seen Derek, but she’d also seen her replacement.
The new Emily, the one who was blonde and had blue eyes, and had a face like nothing could shake her.
The unflappable new Emily.
It was more than enough to send anyone into a tailspin. Add to all of those events the fact that Emily had not just been seeing her former boss. But she had also been seeing her former boyfriend. The man looking at her like she was the one who was at fault.
The one responsible for things not working out between them, and she had not stood a chance. In fact, her going out afterwards, and making sure to get as drunk as was humanly possible was actually the most logical thing that any sane human being would have done in her situation.
If she had come back from all of that and had continued on with life as though nothing had changed. Doing her cleaning, cooking, embroidering and just hanging with her mother like nothing had happened. Then Emily would have really been worried about herself. That would have meant that something deep within her was shattered beyond repair.
She had been about to bear her heart to the man. To confess to loving him like she had never loved another. It was only right that she grieve her loss. But even as she saw no fault in the way in which she had chosen to express her pain over Derek.
Emily had to admit that she could have changed a few things. Maybe bought two bottles of wine instead of three, or she should have just stuck to one.
Had she done that, her head would not be feeling as though it were splitting open.
And even with her eyes closed, Emily still felt as though it were too bright out. There was no way actually opening her eyes would be a fun experience. But still, it had to be done. So after taking a few deep breaths to get herself ready. Emily opened her eyes a sliver.
Only to promptly shut them again. Her headache having been amplified by that small exposure to light.
Realizing that doing things in increments was not going to help her. Emily took yet a few more deep breaths. This time when she opened her eyes she did not do so, by pulling the lids up only a little bit.She forced them all the way open.Unable to hold back a pained hiss, as the light hit her eyes fully. But after a few blinks she was able to endure the glare of the light.
Rubbing gently at her pounding head in an effort to relieve her pain, Emily looked around. It seemed that she had fallen asleep in the living room. But it was not as bad as it could have been. Her coat was folded over the top of the couch, and she’d also avoided waking up with more aches and pains. All thanks to her mother having had the foresight to bring Emily’s pillow, and also a blanket to cover her with.
The older woman might not have been able to carry Emily to bed. But she had made sure that Emily was as comfortable as possible on the carpet.
Glancing over at the table, Emily expected to find the bottles of wine as well as the glasses waiting for her, but they were gone. In their place, there were some painkillers and a bottle of water.
Getting on her knees, Emily crawled towards the table and reached for the bottle. Opening it with shaky hands, and then drinking some of the water. It did not help with how awful her mouth stank. But it did make her throat feel less like it had been rubbed with sand.
Reaching for the painkillers, Emily downed them with yet another gulp of water, and then she settled back down. Her hand going for the note that was on the table.
’Gone to work. Drink plenty of fluids and rest up. Love, mom,’ the note read, and Emily had to smile despite the headache that was still yet to be reduced by the painkillers. Her mom could have very simply just left Emily a text. She would have read it later.
But the woman was so old school. She still thought that notes were the way to go. Once the painkillers kicked in, and Emily felt a little bit better. She made her way to the bathroom and got ready for the day.
Shower done, her teeth brushed, hair brushed, Emily felt a little bit more human. And as was her routine, she cleaned up a bit around the apartment, counseling herself as she did so.
Seeing Derek the day before had been hard, but it had also been necessary.
They’d not shared words, but that brief encounter had provided some of the closure that Emily needed.
She would not let him rule over her life anymore. Emily was over him( if she said it enough times, it might become reality). Her little drinking binge the day before had been a once-off thing. Now she was going to focus on building herself back up and living her life to the best of her abilities.
That proclamation of course lasted a few days. Getting broken when Emily, on her hands and knees on the carpet. Happened to look over, and see the bottle of wine that had rolled away from her the day before.
This is a very bad idea, Emily. Put the bottle away, her inner voice said. But she could barely hear it. She had bought three bottles because she had intended to drink three bottles. Yes, she was a strong woman who was moving on with her life after having her heart broken.
But she could use a break every now and then.
She’d not had to be as strong while drunk. Now, she would finish off the last bottle. Cry a few more tears, and once she sobered up, then she would really begin her healing journey.
This time, Emily was at least clear-minded enough to carry the bottle of wine with her to her bedroom. She would not have her mother finding her again. That would not have been fair on the older woman. Emily had spent years protecting her mom from pain. She was not about to start being the one to inflict it.
