Sleeping With The CEO-Chapter 327: Hard To Say
Chapter 327: Hard To Say
After everything that had gone on, Jane Molson had bigger things to worry about than the fact that neither she, nor her daughter owned a car. But as Derek Haven drove them through the city streets, that was exactly what she was thinking about. freёwebnoѵel.com
Not owning a vehicle was not something that Jane had ever regretted. After all, the city was a much kinder place to those who did not have to worry about taking care of their cars. They did not have to worry about parking fees, and they also did not have to concern themselves with car maintenance.
That was why Jane had never really cared much about getting her own car.Despite the fact that both she and Emily could have afforded to buy one. But now as she sat in the back of Derek’s car with Cassie by her side.
Jane was seeing the benefits of owning a vehicle. Were she in public transport? She would not have had the luxury to just let her mind wander for a bit. She would have had to remain aware to prevent the possibility of her missing her stop.
But in the privacy that the back of Derek’s personal car provided. Jane could focus on other things without having to keep an eye out.
Stealing a look over at her fellow backseat passenger. She realized that Cassie was doing the same as well, thinking on matters, gathering her thoughts. Except it was not just Cassie as Jane had known the woman in her past. The woman sitting next to her was Cassandra Haven.
The mother of Derek Haven.
Such a small detail, but it made a world of difference. When Jane had found out that her daughter was dating a man who was her boss. She had thought that that situation was complicated.
But now, knowing that Derek was Cassie’s son, made things even messier. Jane kind of wished for the days when her biggest issuewas that he was both Emily’s boss, and her boyfriend.
When she and Cassie had parted ways all those years ago. They had decided on having no contact with one another as a way of trying to protect their children. But it seemed that neither of them had known that that plan had fallen apart two years ago, when Jane’s daughter had gotten a new job, and Cassandra’s son, had found himself a new PA.
When the car finally came to a stop, and the four of them made their way into a restaurant that was just oozing money. Their children walking ahead of them, holding hands. Jane slid her hand into Cassie’s and squeezed tight before letting go. A silent reminder that they would get through the situation.
The small bit of comfort helping to settle Jane.
She had not wanted to talk about things back at the apartment, but as they got seated in one of the private rooms in the restaurant. She knew that there would be nowhere to run.
After decades of avoiding the issue, things were finally going to be revealed.
It was clear from the moment theybsat down that Derek and Emily wanted tostart talking as soon as they reached the private room. But For the sake of keeping up appearances, they ordered first. Though once the food arrived, none of them bothered to eat it. Moving her vegetables around with her fork, Jane began speaking. Coming to the restaurant really had helped.
It was easier for her to talk about things. When she was not looking at the walls of the home that she had shared with her husband once upon a time.
"As the two of you already know, Cassie and I met the day that our husbands died. But what you do not know is that your fathers died together. Not in separate incidents like you have always been told,"
It took a moment for her words to sink in, and the second their children understood. They were already shaking their heads, not wanting to believe it. Before they could start repeating the tales that Jane and Cassie had fed them when they were little kids. They were presented with more truth, and they had no choice but to listen.
"The stories that you do believe. The one about the cancer, and the overdose were lies," It was Cassandra who said it, and Jane looked at her in gratitude.
Jane had wanted to be the one to say the words, but they had died in her throat. Shame preventing her from voicing them. What mother wouldn’t be ashamed of finally admitting such a huge lie to her child.
But even as Derek stood stock still, eyes wide in shock. Jane’s Emily was shaking her head, still not believing it. "No, no, I remember Dad had cancer. We used to go and visit him in the hospital,"
She said and Jane nodded.
"That part is true. Your father did have cancer. But the day he died, he was in remission. We were planning to tell you that evening. We were going to make a huge deal out of it," They had been given hope, only to have it stripped away.
"But the cruelty of life, the day that we were supposed to tell you that he got to live longer, was the day he died," Jane said with a humorless laugh, unshed tears making her eyes sting.
There would never be any words to describe how cheated she had felt back then. In fact, she still felt cheated. But there was nothing that she could do to change things.
"What the two of you know as the truth is actually a lie that we told not only the two of you but the rest of the world as well. It is just an official story that we came up with," Jane said. And Cassandra’s son finally came back to life, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the two of them.
"If the overdose and cancer story is nothing more than an official statement than you came up with. Then what is the unofficial story, the one that is the actual truth?" Derek asked. He had Cassandra’s no-nonsense, straight to the point approach to things.
Any other day, Jane would have appreciated it.
But now she found herself wishing that Derek was the kind to dance around a subject.
Because his question felt like a knife going right between her ribs, and piercing her heart. She opened her mouth to try and answer him. After all it was what they had come to the restaurant to do. But the words would not come.
Looking over at Cassandra, Jane silently begged her to continue. But it seemed that the other woman was suffering with the same thing that Jane was. The words to describe what had happened to their husbands were on the tip of Jane’s tongue.
But she could not bring herself to say them.
In the end both she and Cassandra just looked at their children. Silent tears streaming down their faces, and she saw the moment that things clicked into place for both of them because the light in their eyes dimmed. Terrible understanding shadowing their faces.
In the end it was Derek who said what neither she, nor Cassandra could say. His voice a sorrow filled whisper as the words moved past his lips.
"They were murdered, weren’t they?"
