Sleeping With The CEO-Chapter 329: Liars
Chapter 329: Liars
Emily was a grown woman who made grown woman decisions every day. She made her own money, she took care of herself. And Derek too was a grown man capable of standing on his own two feet, and handling the challenges that the world threw at him, like all other adults did.
But at the same time, when it came to experiences in the world. The two of them, especially when compared to their mothers, were impossibly young. It was not a fact that Emily liked to acknowledge, but just because she did not like acknowledging it, that did not make it any less true.
In fact, it made it even more so when Cassandra Haven had finally set the record straight. Admitting that Emily’s father had not died of cancer, and that Derek’s father had not died of an accidental overdose. That the two of them had instead been involved in an accident that was highly suspicious.
Emily had felt rage beginning to build within her. Slowly replacing the shock that had come with the revelation. She had been ready to start arguing. To vent her frustration and disappointment at having been lied to for years.
Sure she and Derek had lied too. Keeping their sleep struggles secret for years. But that was completely different. At least that was what Emily had thought. And then the reason behind the lies their mothers had told had been revealed, and all of the rage had left Emily like a balloon losing air.
It seemed that they were incredibly similar to their mothers in that respect, and Emily could not be mad about that. From the way Derek seemed to lose steam as well, neither could he.
It seemed that everyone at the table had lied to protect a loved one.
Looking over at the two women before her, Emily no longer just saw them as their mothers. She saw the grieving widows who’d had to make difficult decisions and had made them without hesitation in order to protect their children.
If something were to happen to Derek. Emily would want to find out every small detail that she could in search of the truth. So for their moms to push aside that instinct.Opting instead to care for their children, it must have taken a great deal of strength. A strength that Emily was certain she did not possess and never wanted to.
"How did you bear it?"Emily asked, unable to keep the question to herself. It was Derek’s mother who answered her.
"It was difficult, especially in the beginning. With your father’s gone and the two of you in the hospital. The only reason that we kept moving was because we had each other to lean on,"
"After the accident, the police tried to question you guys to find out what you remembered. But just mentioning the word accident seemed to set you two off,"
"At first the doctors said that it was just the shock that it would wear off after a few days, and you’d be able to be questioned properly. But then the nurses started finding you two awake no matter what hour they did checks on you. And on the days that the police came by things got even worse," Their moms looked at them sadly, and Emily could hardly bear the sorrow in their eyes.
"You guys just seemed to shut off, being unresponsive, staring off into space. Not saying a word to anyone. It was terrifying. And the doctors were talking about having the two of you admitted to a psychiatric hospital, just for a little while they said..." Emily found herself clinging to Derek’s arm at that. Blunt nails digging into the sleeve of his shirt.
A psychiatric hospital for children who’d just watched their fathers die.
It was a terrifying thought. How could the doctors have ever thought that that would be a good idea? They’d just watched their fathers die and then they wouldn’t be having their moms around either. Seeing the expression on her face, Emily’s mother gave her a sad smile.
"That’s not even the worst of it. They were scared of Cassandra because when they saw her. They saw status and power. For us things were a bit different. In addition to wanting to have you institutionalized. One doctor even wanted me to sign you up for drug trials," Emily’s stomach twistednin knots.
"Apparently the drug that he was testing would revolutionize the world of sleep. A few years after I turned him down, I found out that some of the patients who took the drug never woke up," Just how cruel could the world be to grieving women with hurt and traumatized children. The lives of the Molsons, and the Havens had been falling apart, yet everybody had already been looking to benefit from the situation.
"Where was my uncle in all of this? Father was his twin. Surely he must have showed an ounce of care for someone other than himself back then," Derek asked.
It was a simple question, but it had Cassandra Haven, looking as though she had aged a thousand years in a matter of minutes, shook her head at him.
"It took a few days to get in contact with your uncle and when he finally did show up, he had been with an army of lawyers ready to take Haven Group," Derek shook visibly, his rage barely supressed.
"But that was his brother, his twin.I know that he does not care for me, or you. But father...," Cassandra shook her head.
"Your uncle has only ever cared about himself. Sebastian first and Sebastian last. There’s no room for anyone else in that selfish heart of his. It is why he does not know how his brother died to this day,"
"He doesn’t know?" Derek asked, and his mother nodded.
"Like we said, the official story we gave to the two of you and the rest of the world is that your father died of a drug overdose and Emily’s father was taken by cancer,"
It was a sad state of affairs when a man’s twin brother, somebody who was his closest blood relation, was counted as the rest of the world when it came to who deserved to know the truth.
"Your uncle has always been too quick to run to the papers with personal matters. And I also did not trust him to not try and use your father’s death as a way to get himself into the position of CEO," Emily had to nod in agreement at that.
Sebastian was cold enough to have tried to use sympathy votes.
’Oh, my twin is dead,’ to get ahead.
"But why cut each other off? You could have continued to lean on one another?"
Her mother shook her head at Emily’s question.
"And just how would we have explained suddenly knowing one another? That would have been a problem,"
"But the biggest deciding factor in us breaking contact was the two of you,"
"Us!"Emily and Derek said in unison, unable to hide their surprise. Looking at them, her mom burst into tears, and Derek’s mother had to take over.
"Whenever the two of you saw each other you would just break down in tears and cling to one another. Then you would curl up and sleep wherever you happened to be. Be it the cold hospital floor, an uncomfortable chair or the bed,"
"But the strangest thing was that if we parted you guys. When you saw each other again, you seemed to struggle to place each other like you were strangers. It often took a few minutes of just staring at one another before it seemed to click that you knew each other. It was very unnerving to see," Hearing about it was spooky enough, their moms seeing it must have been even worse.
"The two of you would go from hours of clinginess to just having these blank looks on your faces. Staring at one another without saying a word. In the end, that was what made it easier to take you two away from one another,"
"When I took you home and told you that your father had died of cancer, you believed me without question,"
"And though you were still suffering from nightmares, when they stopped, I believed that it was a sign that things were getting better. I had no idea that you were lying to protect me," Emily’s mom said, her crying now under control.
" It was the same for me too. I lied to you about the overdose, and I believed that you were getting better. That I’d made the right call. Especially when your insomnia was cured," Cassandra told her son.
Their long-held secret finally told, the two women seemed to breathe easier.
Looking around at the faces in the room. Emily could not help but let out a strangled laugh-cry. She was in a room full of liars, herself included, but she would not have headed any other way. They were all liars for the sake of good after all. freēnovelkiss.com
