Chapter 332: Skeletons

Though Emily had been aware of the secret that she had kept since childhood. She had not realized that there were other secrets out there keeping her bound. Secrets like the fact that their mums knew one another, and that their fathers had died together.

But despite not knowing that they were there in the first place. Now that everything was out in the open, Emily felt that she could breathe easier. After going years weighed down by an invisible weight, she could finally stand straighter. That should have made Emily feel relaxed and content.

For the most part, she was. But there was still one tiny part of her that would not settle. A small voice at the back of her head whispering insistently. It should have been easy for her to push it aside and ignore it. But it was proving incredibly difficult to do.

She was at least glad that their mothers did not seem to have the same problem as her.

In a surprising turn of events, after they had talked everything out at the restaurant, Cassandra Haven had declined to return to the manor. Instead, she had spent the night at the apartment with Emily’s mum, and Emily had gone off with Derek, and the two of them were currently in bed together, just cuddling.

But Emily could not shake off the unsettled feeling that enveloped her because despite everything that she had. Which made no sense.

She and Derek were back together. Their moms were reunited after decades apart. Plus the two of them were no longer actively lying to their mothers. Those were things to be grateful for. Things that should have made her happy, but still, Emily was feeling restless. Burrowing closer to Derek, she nuzzled the tip of her nose against his skin and sighed.

"I have missed this," Emily said, and she meant every word. Those weeks after she had broken up with him had been particularly hard on her. Especially during the nights when she had been cold and alone in bed. Before Derek, being lonely in bed, had never bothered her. It was all that she had known.

But then, after him, Emily had realized that she had gotten addicted to him in the short period of time that they had been sleeping together.

The cold lonely nights when she had been in bed by herself, had really made her appreciate having his warm body next to hers. Now as they lay in bed, Emily was doing her best to enjoy it instead of worrying.

She felt a thrill when he dropped a kiss on the top of her head, before replying.

’I have missed this too," He told her, his hand settlling over the top of her arm and he began running his fingers over a small area of exposed skin. The sensationwas soothing, and it made Emily relax a bit more.

A few quiet minutes passed with them, staying just like that. Holding one another close and listening to each other’s breaths. The companionable silence was broken by Derek huffing loudly. Moving his hand from Emily’s upper arm, and towards her waist where it settled possessively.

"What is on your mind?" He asked and Emily could not help but smile.

"What makes you think that there’s something on my mind?" He laughed at that, and there was a kiss on the top of her head.

"Because I know you," He said simply.

Instead of denying and saying everything was fine. Emily sighed, clinging tighter to him. The man really did know her. She had been trying to keep all of the restlessness she felt about the situation to herself. But he had still picked up on the fact that something was on her mind, and he cared enough to want to know what it was.

Nuzzling him again, Emily settled down and gathered her thoughts. If she was going to present her case, she wanted it to be in a calm, logical manner. Instead of sounding as though she were being overly emotional. "Yesterday, after we had all talked everything out.

I got the feeling that our moms do not want to look into what happened to our dads," Emily paused tapping the pads of her fingers against Derek’s chest.

"And they have every right to feel that way. They have been through so much. I worry about what the stress of opening up old wounds would do to them," For a few moments Derek did not say anything. Then the hand around Emily’s waist tightened briefly before he let go.

"You think that we should investigate, don’t you?"

"I do, but I feel so selfish for wanting that. Everything is goingwell. I am scared that I will ruin things by looking into the past," Derek shifted and Emily thought that he was getting ready to move away from her. But he was just getting more comfortable.

"To be honest, I too have been thinking about reopening the case. I get what you are saying about our mothers,"

"But I do not feel that I will be able to rest until I have closure on this. We cannot just let sleeping dogs lie in this situation. We have to know," Derek said.

Emily bit her bottom lip. And then she released it.

"But what about our moms?" She asked. That was the major roadblock in all of this. If they dug into the past, they ran the risk of hurting their moms again. And Emily did not want that.

The two of them had already been through enough.

"How about we not tell them? We just handle things on our end, and then, if we find something, we can let them know. And if not, we will not be getting their hopes up," Derek said, and Emily found herself agreeing with him.

They had literally just cleared their respective closets of all of the skeletons a few hours prior. Now they would be adding more. But Emily at least hoped that these skeletons would not stay hidden for long.
