Chapter 351: Calming Violence

Cassandra Haven was used to nerve wrecking situations. But the intense situations that she had grown accustomed to, were mostly centered around business deals and tense negotiations.

Having to wait in the hospital for word on whether or not her son was still alive and well, was a different kind of tense situation. One that Cassandra did not want to be part of, but she did not have a choice.

Not only had her son nearly drowned, Derek had also been shot.

Bullet wounds were complex. The injury from it could cause all sorts of problems for both Derek and Emily. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

Thinking that someone had not only forced them over the edge. But they had also shot at them too, made Cassandra so angry. Were she in a better state of mind. She would have been doing something about it. Putting all of her effort into finding out who had dared to point a gun at her son, not resting until they were found.

That was what she should have been doing. Being proactive. Making sure that her mind was kept occupied. But Cassandra was in no shape for such a demanding task.

She had barely been able to give out the orders to keep the press away, and to also call in her own private security when she had been informed of Derek and Emily’s additional injuries. Her son being afforded as much protection as she could give him.

And the press also being kept away for privacy had been as much forward thinking, as Cassandra’s overwhelmed mind had been able to do. Now she sat in the private waiting room watching as Jane got up from time to time to pace, unable to do anything but wait.

It was as though there had been this huge wall erected, one that separated the normal take charge Cassandra, and the mom Cassandra. Leaving the softer motherly side of her as the more dominant part. Making it impossible to think of doing anything other than making sure that she waited for news on her son. Hoping and praying that he made it out alive.

During the hours that she’d been in the waiting room with only an equally worried Jane for company. Cassandra had almost begun to believe that nothing could pull her out of that state. That she would be stuck as a nervous wreck forever. Waiting for news and unsure on how to proceed with anything else.

But then in had come her brother-in-law.

And like the wrecking ball that he was. Just the sight of him was enough to destroy the emotional wall that Cassandra had accidentally constructed. Rage instantly pooling in her veins as she’d watched the smug idiot waltz into the waiting room.

Looking as though he were having the time of his life. She had already kicked him out at the search site. Anyone else would have been able to read between the lines, and realize that they were not welcome at all.

But Sebastian was the type of fool who needed to be told more than once. But still, with all of her rage, Cassandra had never once thought of resorting to physical violence, which was why it was so satisfying to see Jane doing something that she hadn’t thought of.

The look of absolute shock on Sebastian’s face was something that she would relish for a long time. And even now, as he shook, clearly embarrassed. Trying to puff up his chest and look threatening, Jane could not help but smirk.

To the outside world, Sebastian might have seemed like a worried uncle. That was the persona that he had perfected for outsiders. But Cassandra knew better. Sebastian did not care for her son at all. Even when Derek had been a baby. Sebastian had seen him as nothing more, than the reason that the position of CEO was getting further, and further away from him.

This sudden show of worry from the man was nothing more than an act. And so, Cassandra did not even bother addressing the slap as she looked at her brother-in-law.

"We both know that you do not care, Sebastian. What are you doing here now?" She asked him outright. The satisfaction that she had gotten from seeing him take a slap to the cheek, fading quickly. She was far too worried about her son, for the cheer she’d felt to last.

Nodding at the security to let him go. Cassandra went to sit down, taking Jane’s hand and bringing the other woman with her. Fun as it would be to watch her tear Sebastian apart. Jane needed to be in hospital waiting for news on her daughter. Not in a jail cell.

She watched as he shrugged out of the hold of loosened the guards. When they tried to grab him again, Cassandra shook her head, and they stopped. The sooner Sebastian said what he had come to say. The sooner he would leave.

"Had I known that you were in the company of a wild cat. I would have kept my distance," He glared at Jane and she returned the look. Shaking his head as though he were dislodging something foul, Sebastian turned back to Cassandra.

" Anyhow, sister-in-law, what brings me here is my love for my nephew," He said. And Cassandra wanted to scoff, but instead she let him continue.

"The press are out there, wanting to know what is going on. This is quite the story. And I’m here to offer my services to be the family spokesperson, so that I be the one to relay details in a manner that will not damage the family reputation," Cassandra looked at him, and then she looked back to Jane.

The other woman was wide-eyed, her mouth slightly agape. Clearly feeling the same disbelief that Cassandra was.

Was Sebastian for real? Was he seriously worrying about the press at this moment? In fact, he was not worried about the press. He wanted to be the one to sell the story. Basking in the limelight, using her son’s situation for his own benefit.

All of a sudden, the slap that Jane had given him did not feel as though it were enough.

"Get out, and do not come back Sebastian. I mean it. You are the CEO, just like you have always wanted. If you do not want me interfering and ruining that for you, then you will stay out of my business. My son and I have done fine without you all of these years, and we will continue to do so without you, you conniving snake,"

Rather than be shamed, Sebastian actually seemed to preen at the last part. He lifted his hands in mock surrender, and left without kicking up a fuss. Just like he had done back at the tent.

A strange light in his eyes, and a smirk dancing at the corners of his mouth. Like he was listening to a joke only he understood.

His strange reaction tripped alarm bells in Cassandra’s mind. But she was too flustered by everything going on to try and figure out why she felt so uneasy.

Once he was gone, Cassandra felt all of the strength leave her, and she rested her head against Jane’s shoulder...exhausted.

"If he comes back again, we should break a few bones, maybe knock out some of his teeth," Jane said, and Cassandra could not help a weak laugh. Adding her own two cents on the matter.

"Maybe even pull out that hair of his. He had a hair transplant a few years back. He would freak if he lost a handful of it," Cassandra said. All of a sudden she felt grateful to her useless brother-in-law.

Their mutual dislike for him was helping to turn their attention away from the situation with their children. With any luck, they could pass a bit more time talking about all the bad things they would do to him if given the chance.

And news on their children would come before they ran out of all the ways in which they wanted to punish Sebastian for being such an insensitive idiot.

Hopefully, it would be good news.
