So I'm a Dragon, So What? - Game System-Chapter 49: Morale!
Chapter 49 - 49: Morale!
Seeing Elliot instantly incapacitate a dozen adventurers...
The noisy crowd instantly fell silent. Everyone was speechless. Ordinary people mostly had a habit of bullying the weak and fearing the strong; it was their way of survival.
Those with unyielding, steely personalities had mostly died out throughout history. Who survived to pass on their genes were mostly those skilled at just... surviving.
So, when Elliot displayed extraordinary power, they became as quiet as cicadas in winter.
"What do you think you're doing?!" Julius's voice boomed through the crowd.
The Hero held considerable prestige among humans. Even though Julius was still just a teenager, his voice carried a certain authority.
He continued, "Lord Elliot here is a guest we invited! He will help us protect this city! And this is how you treat a guest who is here to defend our city?"
As Julius spoke, the surrounding humans all lowered their heads in shame. "Hero Julius..." For some reason, despite being reprimanded by the Hero, no one dared to argue back. The title of Hero truly wasn't just for show.
"Lord Elliot, we need your strength now. I implore you to help us!" Julius bowed deeply to Elliot, his voice filled with respect. He knew very well that only with this man's help did they have a chance to save the city.
"...Alright," Elliot nodded slightly. He had already shielded Kumoko with his Divine Domain; she wouldn't be affected by the outside world.
Right now, if Flamebright City fell, it wouldn't benefit him at all. At this moment, his interests aligned with the Hero's.
"Thank you so much," the Hero said, his gratitude heartfelt.
"Let's go," Elliot sighed. He had finally gotten dragged into this battle after all. But just before leaving, his gaze swept over a certain individual in the crowd before he followed the Hero out.
The person his gaze fell upon was the mage, Anthony.
"Phew—that was close," Anthony muttered, wiping a bead of sweat. He hadn't expected this Elliot to be so incredibly strong, taking down a dozen Level 20 warriors in an instant. Good thing he hadn't personally stepped in, or he'd be the one lying on the ground now.
But, before he could even catch his breath... a massive earth spike suddenly erupted from beneath his throat, impaling him upwards, piercing grotesquely towards the sky!
...
Squelch— Anthony instantly coughed up blood, which gushed from his mouth. "AAAAAAAHHH—!!!"
As Elliot left the inn with the Hero and Lilith, an earth spike had silently extended from below, skewering him through the groin and diagonally out his mouth.
His death was incredibly gruesome, and it happened right in the middle of the crowd, all within a few seconds.
"Lord Anthony!"
"My lord! My lord! What happened to you?!" Women screamed.
The other adventurers rushed over in terror, only to find Anthony's eyes rolled back like a dead fish, blood pouring from his mouth like a fountain. He was beyond dead.
And at the tip of the earth spike, clusters of small, blood-red flowers bloomed, emitting a strange, sweet fragrance. Gasp— The onlookers sucked in a cold breath, recoiling in horror.
They had never seen anything so terrifying. A rock spike suddenly shooting up from the ground, instantly killing Lord Anthony.
Even weirder, those blood-red flowers blooming on the spike seemed to have blossomed by drawing on Anthony's blood. A perfectly fine mage, killed in broad daylight before everyone's eyes. Such (a miserable sight/too horrible to look at) death!
The city guards responsible for maintaining order quickly arrived. Seeing the scene, even they felt a little queasy.
Fortunately, the captain of the guards was composed enough. He ordered the soldiers beside him, "Pull Anthony's body out. Find a random place to bury him."
"But, the culprit..."
"Don't worry about him!" the captain barked. The most important thing now was to maintain order in the city and prepare for the imminent attack by the spider army from outside the walls!
This method of killing, impalement, had actually been tried by someone in another world; it wasn't unique.
The one who truly popularized it was the infamous Vlad the Impaler. As the son of "Vlad Dracul" (Vlad the Dragon), he earned the name "Dracula" (Son of the Dragon) and was the historical basis for the famous vampire, Count Dracula.
Legend says Vlad III had a condition where the sight of blood drove him into a frenzy, and he was known for his cruel practice of impaling prisoners of war on sharp wooden stakes, thus spreading the "Dracula" moniker throughout Europe.
Eventually, the name Dracula became inseparable from vampires.
"But I'm no Impaler Lord..." Elliot mused quietly. For a god to personally kill someone... it did seem a bit beneath his dignity.
But Elliot didn't believe that gods were truly as desireless and passionless as saints.
After all, even though he had become a god, he still possessed his past life's memories, memories of traveling with Kumoko.
That wouldn't change. He knew he hadn't yet reached a state of being completely devoid of desire or emotion.
Besides, if saints were truly without desire, then in the Investiture of the Gods, why did Saint Tongtian get angry over the fall of his disciples?
And why was Goddess Nuwa enraged by the Human Emperor's blasphemy? Ultimately, even after ascending to godhood and sainthood, joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness still existed.
"Lord Elliot... if I may be so bold, your gaze just now was a little frightening," Lilith said softly.
Snapping back to the present, Elliot nodded. "Was it? I'll pay attention."
"Oh, right, what about your pet?"
"Pet?"
"You know, the little spider that was on your shoulder," Lilith smiled sweetly.
Elliot's eyes flickered slightly. He didn't like her referring to Kumoko as a pet. Rather than a pet, it was more like... a friend?
Or perhaps... Elliot himself was a little confused. If he couldn't figure it out, he wouldn't dwell on it.
"I left her in the room," Elliot said. "The current environment isn't suitable for her to be out."
"That's true." Lilith nodded.
The rest of their journey passed in a long silence. For some reason, she felt that this Lord Elliot's attitude towards her was a bit too cold.
In his presence, it seemed her charming figure was no different from an ordinary person's, perhaps even less attractive to him than Hero Julius. So strange!
At the city gate, dark clouds pressed down, as if the city itself was about to crumble. The hundred thousand spiders had finally arrived at the city gates. It was quite a grand, imposing sight. But for the defending soldiers, it was pure torment.
"So scary..."
"Are these the spiders from the Elroe Labyrinth? What a sight!"
"Damn it! If they break into the city, the consequences will be unimaginable!"
"My heavens, there are so many! Can we really keep them out?"
"We have to hold them, even if we can't! My fiancée is still in the city! After this battle is over, I'm going back to marry her!" Many held their breath, their hearts pounding.
They swallowed hard, the tension accelerating their adrenaline, making their pulses race. Just the sight of the seemingly endless horde was enough to make the fainthearted lose their will to fight.
"Lord Ronandt!" The defending soldiers all looked towards the silver-haired human mage.
Although there were catapults on the city walls, and the soldiers were equipped with bows and crossbows, and they were all Level 10-ish human warriors with decent stats, against a spider army of this magnitude, mages clearly had the advantage.
There had always been a saying: a warrior can control a part of a battle, but a mage can destroy nations.
Most of the warriors present had probably dreamed of being mages. Warriors? Who cares about warriors? Are they even worthy of carrying a mage's shoes? Not a chance.
A truly powerful mage on the battlefield was a complete slaughter machine! Before the industrial revolution, humans could fight with numbers.
But ever since the Gatling gun was invented, a dozen men could hold off thousands. And in this world, one mage was like a hundred Gatling guns.
The comparison might seem comical, but it was quite accurate.
Taking a deep breath, Ronandt said to the surrounding soldiers, "Gentlemen, I need your cooperation..."
"...Buy me ten minutes!"
Ten minutes! Can... can we hold out that long? Looking at Lord Ronandt's posture, he was preparing to cast a large-scale destructive spell.
Such magic required a long preparation time, consumed a lot of mana, and if interrupted, the entire spell construct would fail.
But at the same time, if such a spell was successfully cast, it could potentially turn the tide of the entire battle!
Large-scale destructive magic might not be effective against high-level individual monsters, but it could inflict maximum casualties on ordinary ones.
"We swear to protect Lord Ronandt to the death!"
"We swear to protect Lord Ronandt to the death!"
"We swear to protect Lord Ronandt to the death!"
One by one, the soldiers shouted, their faces determined, as if ready to sacrifice their lives, and raised their heavy swords.
They had no other choice but to trust Lord Ronandt. To believe that this Lord Ronandt could lead them to victory!
Below the city gates, the Queen Taratect opened her sharp fangs and let out a strange, eerie screech.
And then, the other hundred thousand spider monsters echoed her cry.
After roaring, the spider monsters, like a dark, surging tide, charged towards the city.
They're coming!
Many soldiers' faces turned pale, their sword-hands trembling slightly, as if their strength had been drained. But in their hearts, they all shared the conviction that they could not retreat.
Catapults launched. Crossbows were readied. A dense hail of stones and a rain of arrows shot towards the Queen Taratect's army.
Fortunately, the current spider army wasn't professionally trained. Most of them only had basic innate abilities, lacking the capacity to cast magic.
Faced with the arrow rain and catapult stones, they could only take the hits. Soon, large swathes of spiders were hit by stones and crushed into paste.
But the spider army was fearless, trampling over the corpses of their fallen brothers and sisters, continuing their advance.
