Chapter 236: Unexpected

Warren wiped the blood from his lips as he stared back at the prey who had managed to confront him head on for the first time. He had heard their discussions in the tavern; after all, he had been there.

He had chosen Luna, the beautiful rabbit-eared girl, to be his next prey. Her party members were just extra collateral damage. What he hadn’t expected was just how much of a beast the young lady was.

Warren was of average height and build, nothing remarkable at first glance. But as he discovered that his hobby of observing people was only a small part of his actual gift, he began to change steadily. What was his actual gift, one may ask? Of course, it was murder.

His eyes gleamed with cold excitement as he sized up Luna and her group. This was no ordinary hunt anymore. This was a game of cat and mouse, but with higher stakes.

The forest around them seemed to lean in closer, shadows twisting in response to his dark thoughts. Warren flexed his fingers, savoring the sharp thrill that coursed through his veins.

"You think you can catch me?" he whispered to himself, lips curling into a sinister smile. "This is only the beginning."

Without warning, he melted back into the shadows, disappearing like smoke on the wind, leaving only the faintest rustle and a lingering chill in his wake.

Luna’s breath was steady, her eyes still glowing faintly with crimson fire as she scanned the dark woods, searching for any sign of her elusive opponent.

"We can’t let him slip away again," she said, voice low but resolute. "He’s dangerous. We have to end this before more of us get hurt."

Rachel nodded, still pale but gathering her strength. "Agreed. Let’s move carefully. He’s playing with us, but we’ll turn the tables."

Lily tightened her grip on her gun, eyes narrowing. "I’m ready whenever you are."

Warren slipped silently through the underbrush, every step calculated, every breath measured. His hand closed around the hilt of a wickedly curved dagger, its blade gleaming faintly in the dim light.

Before Lily could react, Warren lunged from the shadows, aiming his blade straight for her side. Time seemed to slow as Lily’s eyes widened in shock, fingers fumbling to raise her gun.

But Adam, still raw from his wound and barely steady on his feet, threw himself between Warren and Lily with a guttural roar, catching the dagger’s blade against his forearm.

The impact sent a shock of pain ripping through Adam’s body. Purple blood welled from the wound, sizzling where the corrosive poison began its work. He gritted his teeth, refusing to fall.

With a surge of desperate strength, Adam twisted his body and drove his own dagger upward in a swift, brutal motion into Warren’s eye.

[Critical Strike!]

Warren’s wild grin snapped into a sharp gasp as the blade pierced deep, blood spurting as he staggered backward, clutching his face.

"Not...not so fast," Adam growled, breathing heavy but steady.

Luna’s crimson eyes flared as she raised her axe, ready to press the advantage. Rachel summoned a shimmering barrier to shield Lily, who took a shaky step back.

Warren snarled through bloodied lips, but the gleam in his eye had faded. The hunter was wounded, but far from finished.

The forest seemed to hold its breath, the deadly game entering its most dangerous phase yet.

Warren staggered backward, clutching his bleeding eye, his snarls twisting into curses. Suddenly, the air around him shimmered, distorting like heat rising from the ground. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

A faint voice broke through the tense silence, trembling with quiet fury. "Enough."

Before anyone could react, Warren vanished in a blur of shadow and light, as if the forest itself had swallowed him whole.

Warren staggered backward, clutching his ruined eye, snarling in fury. Suddenly, the air around him shimmered and cracked like fragile glass breaking. Without warning, a powerful force yanked him off his feet.

He yelped, struggling against the invisible grip. "Hey! What is this? You can’t keep me trapped! I will kill you all!" he spat, voice laced with rage.

A cold, venomous voice sliced through the air before he could say more. "Silence."

Warren’s protests died in his throat as the voice filled the space with pure wrath. Adam’s blood ran cold.

The voice hissed, dripping with hatred. "You cannot hide from me, Adam. This is far from over."

Adam froze, every muscle tensing. That voice was impossible. Elise was supposed to be mute, robbed of her words. Yet there it was, clear and burning with fury.

His eyes widened in disbelief and terror. "Elise? You... you can speak?"

The voice seethed with bitter promise. "You will pay for what you did. I will see you soon. When I do, you will regret every breath."

Warren vanished into the shadows, swallowed whole by the dark forest, leaving only the echo of wrath behind.

Lily’s eyes widened as she watched Warren disappear. She glanced at Adam, her voice trembling slightly. "Who was that? That voice... it sounded familiar. Why does it scare you so much?"

"It was my Sister...the one I delivered to you as a ’present’" Adam winced as he held the flesh of his forearm together to heal faster.

"No...That can’t be!" Lily vehemently denied, her head turning towards Rachel who was equally perplexed.

"How can she speak?! I cut out her tongue myself!" Rachel asked, her voice trembling slightly, she didn’t understand how this could be.

Luna frowned, piecing it together. "If it can heal physical wounds, maybe it can undo other damage too."

Lily’s grip tightened on her gun, unease flickering in her eyes. "You mean... like Elise’s tongue?"

Adam’s jaw clenched. "Exactly. What we thought was lost might be coming back. Elise can fight back now and she may pose a danger to me and everyone else if she comes forward to them with the truth.

Lily lowered her head slightly as she began to think. After a moment of deliberation, she spoke with some hesitation.

"No..I don’t think she will do that...or she can’t. Perhaps she has undergone a mutation like Leo and she knows how your family operates Adam. There is no way she would survive if she came to them now like that."

Adam nodded slowly, wincing as his healing forearm twitched. "You may be right. If Elise has changed like we did, then she knows too much to act recklessly. She would have to be careful. But revenge has a funny way of making people act crazy..."

Luna’s eyes narrowed. "That makes her even more dangerous. Not just because of what she can do, but because of what she might be planning."

And that thought alone made everyone feel a little scared.
