Spirit's Ascension-Chapter 62—New abilities
After confirming that he was alone, Cole finally felt safe enough to summon the Empty Codex into the world.
He willed its appearance and after stirring his life energy a bit, the codex appeared.
Upon summoning it, Cole felt an otherworldly pressure descend. Like a sovereign arriving in the mundane world.
The pressure didn’t last long though, it vanished as fast as it appeared leaving just the Codex there.
Cole looked at the physical appearance of the Codex with wide eyes.
Previously, it already looked mystical and special enough but right now it doesn’t appear like something that belongs to the world at all.
The runes all over it were pulsating slightly releasing faint light. Every pulsation releasing an aura of dominance.
Then Cole checked inside it, it was looking for the changes in the pages but he was quickly disappointed.
Nothing really changed inside the Codex except the full reformation of the combusted page.
The thin page formed from the earlier combustion too had been completely revitalized and became as thick as he should.
"Don’t tell me that’s all," Cole said with downcasted eyes.
He had expected some massive change but he only got some reconstruction.
Upon every advancement people get One more ability, at least that he knew of, but he didn’t get anything.
"The gap has further widened uhh," he said with a melancholic face.
"Still stuck with the record ability."
At that moment, Cole wanted nothing more than to scream and crash out.
The World seemed to be playing pranks on him. He Awakened a 1-star Innate spirit, so he was always on the shorter leg and now that he expected a new ability, he got nothing.
"Hahahahahahah, Life really is unfair," He said.
While trying to Console, Cole decided to check through the Codex again while trying to grab at the last straw.
"Something, just give me something," He thought.
He looked at the empty pages and also the page containing the Kinetic Acceleration ability.
His eyes suddenly widened while a small smile appeared on his face.
"I haven’t been totally forgotten by the heavens," He said.
He focused his eyes on the page with the Kinetic Acceleration ability and more information began to flood his mind.
Despite not getting any new ability, he had gotten something. He tried his best to remain calm though as the new feature is more like a double-edged sword.
After shuffling through the information he just received, he finally got a full grasp on the new feature.
He could change tiny details about abilities he has recorded. That is, recorded abilities weren’t completely fixed anymore, he could change small details.
It might not sound like a whole lot, but only Cole himself knew how devastating that would be.
But the feature is based on the fact that he understood the details he was changing and how it works.
For example, taking his former ability into context, Flaming fist. If he had this new feature then, he could change the temperature of the flame itself or even change it from flaming fist to flaming arm.
It might sound cool and powerful but only Cole knew how costly it actually was.
He needed to truly understand the change he was about to enact, and he just couldn’t change flaming fist to flame ball.
The changes he could add were limited and he needed true understanding to actually change anything.
Cole realized something very important about the new feature he just received.
It was in line with his point of comprehension when advancing.
"Does that mean, the more I advance in the future, the more features I get," He asked. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
His earlier disappointment had completely vanished from his face and it was now replaced with utter excitement.
He was quite satisfied with what he just got, so Cole decided to cancel his summon of the Codex and get some rest.
He was physically invigorated after his advancement but mentally he was very exhausted.
"Who knew advancement would take so much mental strength," He said.
Slowly, his eyelids drooped before fully and Cole was sent to the dream world fully.
Hours flew by as the sun sunk down the horizon, Cole still nestled in bed with no signs of getting up.
"Get up, lazy kid," Cole suddenly heard from his sleep.
"Your time here is up," the voice continued.
Cole groggily opened his eyes to check who it was. The moment he did, he was snapped fully awake as he rushed to his feet.
Standing by the bed was the stern head nurse, she had warned Cole not to fall asleep during the day as it would hamper his healing.
The first time it happened Cole was made to face harsh punishment, so seeing the woman now, fear crept into him.
"Uhmmm, I can explain," he said anxiously.
"I am fully healed, that’s why I could afford to sleep," Cole said.
Hearing his words, the nurse looked at him with skeptical eyes, before activating what seemed to be her ability.
Green aura shrouded her eyes while she stared straight at Cole. Cole felt slightly uncomfortable as he could feel all of his secrets lay bare in front of her.
"Did you advance," She asked.
Cole didn’t say a word, only responding with a smug smile.
"Little bastard, you almost lost your life," she screamed at Cole.
"Your brazen actions will eventually lead to your ultimate death," She continued.
Now, Cole was totally confused, he expected the nurse to be excited at his advancement and not such a reaction from her.
Instead of excitement she looked extremely annoyed at him.
"Is something wrong with advancing?" Cole asked.
"Is something wrong, are you really asking me that," You should thank the stars for your trashy talent or you would have been dead by now.
"You have been healing here for days, so you could afford to Move and do everything normally but do you think you are fine?"
"Your body is filled with micro injuries and tears everywhere,"
The nurse continued to berate Cole even more, but instead of feeling remorseful, Cole felt completely confused.
He didn’t understand how advancing could have killed and how his trashy talent saved him.
"I don’t understand," Cole said.
"Let me tell you something you don’t know," the head nurse said.
