Chapter 781: Seven hundred seventy-nine, Yhan Cheng

The afterglow of the setting sun shone upon the earth, as people who had been busy all day gradually wrapped up their work, hurrying home.

Cooking smoke curled up, and the scent of food wafted from the kitchens of each household.

Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo walked hand in hand in the Guard’s Members Courtyard. This had become a daily ritual for them.

"Why are you beating me? My dad is a Guard Member just like your dads!" a defiant voice came from ahead.

"Your dad is no longer a Guard Member, my mom said your dad is a traitor."

"My mom said the same thing, you should’ve been kicked out of the Guard District a long time ago."

"Beat him, let’s kill this little traitor!"

Six or seven boys, around eight to nine years old, pinned a boy of about seven or eight to the ground.

The young boy endured their punches with resolute and stubborn eyes, "You’re talking nonsense! My dad is not a traitor; my dad is a hero." His mother had told him his dad hadn’t come back not because he had betrayed them, but because his mission wasn’t finished yet.

Luo Shu looked up and saw, besides these children, several Guard’s Wives around, none of whom seemed inclined to intervene, merely going about their business and glancing over occasionally, as if they were all too accustomed to such scenes.

"Stop it!" Lu Hanmo spoke up with a deep voice.

The boys were startled, immediately ceasing their bullying, and turned their heads to see Lu Hanmo, instantly too frightened to even breathe. Lu Hanmo’s presence was intimidating enough to scare the Guard District’s Guard Members, let alone these still-growing kids.

"Don’t ever bully him again, do you hear me?" Lu Hanmo said sternly.

"We... we understand..."

"We won’t... do it again..."

The children hastily nodded, some of the more timid ones shaking in their boots. They just wanted to leave this place quickly, to get home. This uncle was just too scary!

"Go on!" said Lu Hanmo.

The children scattered in all directions, as if ghosts were chasing them.

Luo Shu walked forward, reaching out to help the boy on the ground, but the boy had already gotten up. This boy was the same one who had accidentally hit her window with a ball that day. No wonder his face bore so many bruises.

"Thank you, Auntie!" the boy said to Luo Shu with a grateful smile. Ever since the news about his dad being a traitor had spread, getting beaten had become a common occurrence—he was already used to it.

"What’s your name? Why were they hitting you?" Luo Shu assessed the boy’s injuries as she asked.

The boy hesitated, biting his lip. After a long pause, he spoke, "My name is Yhan Cheng. They beat me because someone said my dad is a traitor. I know my dad isn’t a traitor; he is a good Guard Member. When I grow up, I want to be a good Guard Member just like my dad." A firm and aspiring glow twinkled in his eyes.

"You’ll definitely become a good Guard Member in the future," Luo Shu said as she ruffled the boy’s hair. Since the first time she saw him, he had made a good impression on her, and his mother, too, was a very strong woman.

"Thank you, Auntie! I will work hard," Yhan Cheng said, nodding resolutely. This auntie was so nice!

"Keep it up! I believe you can make it," Luo Shu said as she looked at Yhan Cheng’s bruised face, feeling a twinge of heartache. At such a young age, when he should be carefree, he had already borne so much that he shouldn’t have to.

She reached out with a pill in hand, offering it to Yhan Cheng, "Eat this, and your wounds will stop hurting."

"Thank you, Auntie!" Yhan Cheng took the pill and put it in his mouth.

"Do you want to become stronger?" Luo Shu asked, watching Yhan Cheng. She noticed his good potential and that with some nurturing, his future accomplishments would be boundless.

She really liked this child, especially his determined eyes. Of course, the main reason was that he was Yhan Cheng.

In her past life, Yhan Cheng grew up to become Hanmo’s guard. During one mission, he took three bullets for Hanmo. Although he didn’t die, he had to say goodbye to his career in the Guard.

The day she met him, she felt he was familiar, and only after she learned his name did she remember who he was.

In her previous life, he had taken good care of her, like an older brother, making her feel a lot of warmth. Now that they had met again in this life, she hoped to change his fate.

"I do!" Yhan Cheng nodded earnestly and with determination, "I want to be strong so I can protect my mother and me from being bullied." Besides him being bullied, his mother was also often harassed by the wives in the Guard’s Members Courtyard.

"Then from now on, come to my house every day, and I’ll help you become stronger," Luo Shu said with a smile.

Upon hearing this, Yhan Cheng looked at Luo Shu with surprise, "Can I really become stronger?"

Luo Shu smiled and nodded, patting Yhan Cheng’s back, "Let’s go, we’ll take you home."

"Okay!" A bright smile spread across Yhan Cheng’s face. He couldn’t remember the last time he had smiled so broadly.

Following Yhan Cheng’s lead, Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo arrived at his home.

As they pushed the door open, they saw it was very rudimentary yet tidy.

Yhan Cheng’s mother was sitting by the table, doing handcrafts. Although the husband’s stipend came on time every month, most of it had to be sent back to the countryside, for Yhan Cheng’s grandparents.

Hearing the door open, Lin Helian turned her head, her face showing surprise upon seeing Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo.

Coming back to her senses, Lin Helian stood up from her work, "Captain Lu! Sister-in-law Lu! Please, have a seat!" Almost everyone in the Guard District knew Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo. Although she seldom went out, she knew of them. But why had they come to her home?

"No need, we just came to bring Yhan Cheng back," Luo Shu said with a smile.

"Thank you, Sister-in-law Lu! I apologize for the trouble," Lin Helian said as soon as she saw the injuries on Yhan Cheng’s face, realizing he had been beaten again. Although pained, she couldn’t change any of it.

"I’ve talked to Yhan Cheng. Starting tomorrow, I want him to come to my house every day and I’ll teach him some things," Luo Shu said.

"Wouldn’t that be too much trouble for you? You’re also inconvenienced right now," Lin Helian said, looking toward Luo Shu’s belly. She had heard of Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo’s stories and knew they were capable people. She was assured that Yhan Cheng would be learning from them, but Luo Shu was pregnant, and she felt uneasy being a bother.

"It’s okay, I’m quite bored at home by myself, and having Yhan Cheng around can keep me company. If it’s convenient for you, you could come with Yhan Cheng," Luo Shu said with a smile. She could see that the mother and son were struggling to make ends meet, and perhaps she could lend a hand. In a way, it would be repaying Yhan Cheng for taking those three bullets for Hanmo in their past life.
