SSS Awakening : I can Adapt to Everything-Chapter 11: Daily Quests
Hide woke up to the sound of nothing.
The ceiling above him was a flat, unblemished white. He searched it for something familiar—vent grates or light strips... and found nothing at first.
His chest rose and fell.
There was a second where his mind tried to put him back on the street: violet blood, the smell of rot. Then the memory slipped sideways and he felt the absence instead.
There was no weight on his body, no ringing in his ears from claws on metal. Just the thin hospital sheet over bare skin.
He moved his fingers.
They obeyed, curling into the fabric. The sheet had that particular texture all hospital linen had, a little rough and stiff at the seams.
He pushed himself up straight, his throat was dry.
"...H-hello?" His voice sounded small in the stillness. "Is— is anyone here? I’m awake."
Silence answered. He waited for some time... but there was no reply from behind the door. The quiet didn’t budge.
He frowned and turned his head, slowly, testing for the dull drag of injuries. His neck ached, but it moved. To his left there was a blank wall, pale and clean.
To his right, a closed door, seamless and no handle on his side—just a vertical strip of darker material where it would slide.
There were no windows either.
He sucked in a breath.
His torso was bare, without any bandages or any type on injury. Just a scar on his left forearm that had already healed.
His heart kicked harder.
"Kai? Risa?" The names came out before he could stop them. He swallowed. "Anyone?"
A soft chime flickered at the top of his vision.
The System unfolded, ignoring the absence of human response like it was irrelevant.
[Adaptive Override — Post Combat Analysis]
Forced deactivation after extreme fatigue.
Location: Whole Body
Source: Stamina Loss
Severity: Increased Probability of Death
System query: Initiate adaptation sequence for this risk type?
[Awaiting command.]
He stared at the text for a heartbeat too long. He had blacked out after he killed those beasts, because he ran out of stamina.
His tongue felt thick.
"...Evolve," Hide whispered.
The System accepted it at once.
[Adapting – 0%]
[3%]
[6%]
He clenched his jaw and tried to pull his legs toward the edge of the bed.
His hips shifted, but nothing happened below his waist.
There was no resistance. It was like his body ended somewhere around mid-thigh and the rest was someone else’s problem.
A cold line traced down his spine.
He instantly grabbed the edge of the blanket with fingers and peeled it back from his legs.
Two black rings circled his ankles.
They weren’t bulky, he couldn’t even feel them to tell if they were actually. He could just see the narrow bands of matte metal, snug against the skin.
Faint blue symbols wandered across their surfaces in lazy loops, fading and starting over.
He tried to wiggle his toes, calves... knees and thighs. His brain sent the signals; there was simply no answer from the other side.
"What the..." his jaw clenched on its own.
He let the blanket fall back over the bands and sank his shoulders deeper into the pillow, breath coming a little too fast.
Kai and Risa were in a car that had turned into a metal coffin.
He was here.
Alive and somehow trapped.
The thought came with a sharp stab of guilt that the System could not blunt. He gripped the sheet until his knuckles went white.
"They’re fine," he told himself under his breath, because there was nobody else in the room to tell him anything. "If I’m here, someone pulled us out. They wouldn’t... they wouldn’t leave them."
He turned his head toward the door again.
"Hey!" His voice cracked on the word. "Is anyone out there? I’m awake. I— I can talk. Where are my friends?"
There was still no answer.
A prickle ran across the back of his neck.
He dragged his gaze up to the corners of the room.
At first, all he saw was white. Smooth join between wall and ceiling, no obvious seams. Then his eyes adjusted to the slight differences in texture.
There were tiny, circular recess in each upper corner. No larger than a coin, the same color as the wall and easy to miss unless you were looking for them.
There were four cameras in this room. One per corner.
Little black pupils, if you let your imagination tilt.
"Of course," he whispered.
He was being observed.
Now that he was free... he called the system window to study it in more details. He hadn’t gotten any time to check the new changes back then.
He simply called ’Class state’ in his thoughts and the system window opened in front of his eyes.

’Hmm... it has quite changed. I have 5 Non-Allocated points now. I must have gotten them after leveling up. Then there is this new option of Inventory and Daily quests.’
But then again, he had a very peculiar question from the moment he got the system.
’Why don’t I have an attribute for mana? I know that the normal state ring doesn’t show it because I don’t have a talent, but even the system doesn’t.’
Then as if answering his thoughts a window appeared in front of him. It was a small one.
[Skills do not use Mana as a base]
Hide read it and felt a little... weird? Yeah, it was weird having someone look into your thoughts.
"Well, fuck that."
First Hide opened the inventory and found that there were 20 slots. out of 20, two were filled. One was a beginners sword and a potion that doubles the physical attributes for 10 minutes, he must have gotten these as level up reward.
Then, he clicked on daily quests.
