SSS Awakening: I Can Steal Attributes-Chapter 56: Apartment Hunting
Usually, students would be reminded through text by either the school or by their assigned teacher.
If there were notifications regarding it, they would usually be received during the night before.
Receiving no notification only indicates that there was no class.
Since there were only a few kilometers left for his daily run, he finally decided to go back the same route and finally ask around for any available apartment nearby.
Since the morning sun had already come up, people began to show up out of their houses as well.
The place he was in was near the city center, so it was obviously packed with people during normal hours.
As he was running, he finally saw an apartment complex in the distance.
Not wasting any time, Desther approached the man that seemed to be the caretaker of the building and asked about the prices for a single room.
"I’m sorry, young man, but we are already full. None of our tenants wants to move out anytime sooner as well," the man apologized as soon as he learned of Desther’s inquiry. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Desther thanked the man before he moved toward the next location.
Unfortunately, they were all fully booked.
However, considering that this place was the center of the Radiant Shelter, Desther kind of expected this situation in advance, so he was not that disheartened and continued to search.
Anyway, if he could not find one any time soon, he planned to search the internet and see if there were any listings he could find nearby through it.
The only problem regarding this method was that nowadays, small establishments like that rarely advertise their businesses on the internet.
Those that were able to afford advertising their business online would surely not be a small one. And most of the time, in such cases, prices tend to be much higher compared to ordinary apartments.
After a few minutes of searching, Desther found another suitable apartment.
Unlike the others he inquired about earlier, this one only has a total of ten rooms and was only two storey tall.
Although this one was already a distance away from Radiant Dawn College, it was still within his acceptable range.
After asking the person in-charge, Desther finally received a somewhat positive answer.
He was an old man with gray hair and a hunchback.
"Good timing. There’s a vacant room here, but we need to wait for a week for confirmation. Are you fine with that?"
Desther looked at the old man with a hint of inquiry in his eyes.
"Oh. The previous tenant is a Combat Professional and has been away for more than two months. Like the others, we have a rule that if two months had passed and the tenant did not pay their rent and no longer showed up in person, we would consider it as the person moving out without notification."
"By that time, we could then rent the place to another person without facing any repercussions. One week from now would be the exact date that I last saw the last tenant here. If they still would not return at that time, then you can rent the place instead."
Hearing his explanation, Desther finally understood what he meant.
Danger exists everywhere nowadays, especially for Combat Professionals.
From the looks of it, if a tenant, especially a Combat Professional does not return after two months, they would consider them as deceased and declare the room as vacant for others to rent.
Although this might sound cruel if the Combat Professional returned after two months only to realize that they no longer had a place to stay and rent. However, in the eyes of the landlords, like the old man, this treatment was obviously fair and just.
In fact, waiting two months before letting others rent the place again would even mean that two months’ worth of rent would be gone from their income. In their perspective, waiting two months should already be generous enough.
"Would you mind if I see the place first?" Desther stated, not bothering to ask about the specifics of the previous tenant.
"Sure, follow me!"
A while later, Desther stared at the room full of dust.
Although the place looked well-arranged, it was still obvious that it had been a while since a person lived here because of the obvious dust on top of the furniture as well as the cobwebs at the corner of the room.
Inspecting the place, Desther thought that the size was good enough for him. There was a small kitchen, and like his current place, the room has its own bathroom and toilet as well.
The bed was also sizable enough, and there was still enough space for him to move around for his daily exercise and training.
Seeing that Desther seemed to be satisfied with the place, the old man finally revealed a crafty smile and finally told him the price of the room.
"The room will cost you 110 Awakened Credits a month. For safety purposes, we require a two-month advance deposit. If you plan to stay long term, I can consider lowering the price to 100 Awakened Credits a month... Hey, hey, stop, where are you going? Why are you running?"
The old man was not able to finish his speech as Desther immediately turned around without saying anything.
That old man was definitely trying to scam him.
There was no need to waste his time on such people. It would be better if he used the wasted time for something productive instead.
Desther found two more apartment complexes after that, but both were already full according to the person-in-charge.
Sighing, Desther decided to take a rest for a bit and try his luck online.
At this moment, Desther sat on a spacious bench in a recreational park.
Aside from him, there were also other people nearby doing all sorts of activities.
Examining his surroundings to be safe, Desther finally took out his phone and began to search for any available apartment or room for rent nearby.
As he was scrolling through his phone, a loud commotion suddenly attracted his attention.
At the same time, the long-silent, mission-giving title, the Chosen One, finally made its appearance.
