SSS-Knight in a Hero World-Chapter 116: Employed
Following the standard procedures of signing waivers and pledge, Ferris finally arrived at the most important part.
Coming up with a hero name.
Ferris stared at the screen for a moment, but there was no sense of hesitation.
He tapped the keys with a strong press from his index finger, eventually forming the title that people will soon call him in the future.
At least for himself and potentially a dozen or more people, it was quite bold, and quite arrogant to the eyes to read.
Knight of Prophecy.
An honorific used to address the knights in his world.
Anyone from his world would immediately know what that title means, it was practically the same as putting a crosshair aimed for his head.
It was a double-edged name, it would allow Ferris to find others like him easier, but it would put him in more danger.
Though, knowing Evening’s manic descriptions of people like him, he would only need to care about dangerous people who have more control over their fractured and blended mind like Evening.
Who knows how many they were, but Ferris wasn’t afraid, he hoped that his title would act as a bait for Miss Evening to abuse.
I wonder if she has a phone number? I’ll definitely ask for it when we meet again.
As he stared blankly in a daze within his thoughts, the employee in front of him began to feel worried.
"Uhm... will that be all sir?"
"Oh, yes." he answered.
As he watched them, he jokingly thought of the name Knight of Prophecy was already taken.
After a quick tapping on the keyboard and mouse, the worker looked back at Ferris with a resounding smile.
"Your hero profile should appear on the database.
Please wait in the lobby to receive your handouts."
Handouts! "Very well." Ferris smiled before leaving towards the lobby.
After walking along the large area of the headquarters, Ferris found himself in the main lobby where heroes mingled around.
Compared to the outside, this place is much more crowded.
There he sat alone in a corner as he observed the sea of faces.
He recognized some faces, but more importantly, a group.
Ferris tried to remember their name, but seeing their colorful costumes, he remembered them as colorful fighters.
They’re looking at the public commission board, they’re happy too.
Seeing that, Ferris remembered the performance he pulled off with Judas.
His heart burned when he thought of that, but for Ferris, he was rather proud of his acting abilities.
Back then, it was the first time I saw your blessing ability in action, Ferris thought.
Since your soul is living within my soul, could I borrow your abilities like your manifestation?
There was no change within his heart.
I guess even you wouldn’t know, is it because you’re incomplete?
Ferris worried that Judas wouldn’t be the same ever again if he were to rejoin with the other so-called fragments.
He sighed heavily.
The string of loud thoughts caused him to go in front of the commission board to clear his mind.
As expected, the hundreds of thousands of digital words suppressed his emotions.
The board stretched to almost 50 meters on either side, and the thousands of commissions listed on the board updated every 30 minutes.
Of course, the board is available online, but since certain commissions can take more than one hero, it’s better to come to the board in person, which makes it easier to gain connections.
Almost immediately, Ferris began filtering out the commissions he saw.
Such as bodyguarding, which was too lengthy and left no room for free time but surprisingly, bodyguard-type commissions made up a good chunk of the commissions created.
Next was bounty hunting, which targeted certain criminals or villains. They paid more than bodyguarding but were more dangerous.
But because Ferris wasn’t vengeful to anyone, bounty hunting wasn’t appealing unless the target interested him.
Lastly, Ferris looked over the third type of commission, investigation.
[lost and found...]
[my pet cat disappeared last night...]
Hmm... Ferris doubted if investigation types were even worthwhile.
But then, he saw a rather eye-catching commission.
A bodyguard/investigation commission.
[help with exploring abandoned facility within a mountain range, protection is also needed. payment is negotiable...]
Commissioner: Marie.
Ferris took out his phone and took a picture of the details, and thankfully, it was exactly the same time the board updated.
Ferris sighed a breath of relief.
Although it’s vague, it looks interesting.
As he backed away from the board so that others can take his place, he heard his name being called out.
"Knight of Prophecy!Knight of Prophecy?"
Compared to the dangers of carrying that title...
This is worse, it’s actually embarrassing! Ferris quickly made his way towards the source so that the emotional pain would end.
One mustn’t yell out a title that carried a world’s weight in such a way, though this was partly his fault for choosing the name.
"That would be me, kind sir." Ferris stepped in front of the yelling man.
The worker looked up towards Ferris, though he wasn’t intimidated by him, in fact, there was a peculiar charisma surrounding Ferris that seemed to ease him.
And the fact that this newbie hero called him sir, the man felt a bit embarrassed.
The tired worker shook his head and focused on his job to make sure of Ferris’ identity, as he compared an ID with his face.
"It matches, this hero ID is yours and.
Congratulations, Sir Knight of Prophecy." The man handed out a white card and a thin envelope.
There isn’t normally a sir attached to that title, but that’s fine.
After thanking the man, Ferris went outside to see his new card under the bright sun.
His face was attached to the card on the top right, and his general information was listed on the left side, which included his name, hero name, and blessing, which was left blank.
Then on the bottom right of it, was his class "D Class" that had a larger font compared to the rest.
His rank wasn’t listed, since it would be uneconomical to have to update a hero’s card every hour or so.
At least for the bottom classes from D to C, rank changed constantly, while rank changes become rarer at the higher classes.
But for Ferris, ranks weren’t too important to him, as all classes had fixed pay grades regardless of rank.
But what was more important now, was the thin envelope he held!
Even though his mind imagined it to be thicker, Ferris was still satisfied with this.
Ten one-hundred-dollar bills.
He softly opened the rough paper, and pulled out a newly minted bunch of bills.
Unfortunate that he already had his lunch for today, otherwise, he would’ve taken himself on a date.
What a sweet smell, Ferris enjoyed the whiff as if it was aromatic tea, or freshly crushed coffee beans.
Although he could’ve stored his new money into his online bank, he decided to hold on to it for a bit longer for good luck.
The next order of business is...
Going home!
Ferris hurried his steps towards home, skipping public transport due to his long-lasting stamina for running so long so many times.
Despite the hefty distance, it felt as if it was a light jog in the morning.
He counted each of the turns and streets he saw and took note of them, but as he got closer, it slowly became more and more instinctive.
Step step step.
He saw the first holy tavern he saw, then close to it was the dark alleyway where he first encountered a degenerate, though, their fate was up to them as Ferris merely passed the alleyway by without batting a second look.
Before he knew it, Ferris was finally at home.
He entered the shoddy apartment building and made his way to his room.
All that was left was a single turn of the doorknob.
All he could think of now, was how musty it must’ve been inside, and how he would use his new money to at least clean it.
Clack!
The knob refused to turn.
Clack clack!
Ferris blinked in silence before remembering something.
Ah... right, I must’ve locked it before I went to the hero exam.
I should ask the landlord, and pay them my long-due rent—
Click!, clack!
The doorknob rattled before turning itself and swinging the door wide open to reveal a familiar face of a degenerate he punched on his first day in this world.
The degenerate I punched? Ferris widened his mouth.
"I-it’s you! Back away! I’ll call the cops on you this time!"
Slam! 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
The small gust of air raised his bangs for a moment before settling down as Ferris processed what had just happened.
It’s a surprise that degenerate has a roof over his head, that was a 180 turn for the better in terms of living conditions.
Ferris thought that he was in the wrong room, but he quickly realized the obvious.
Because of his sudden disappearance, it wasn’t surprising that he’s been kicked out, plus his rent was due.
But what about his things?
The most valuable thing he owned was an old laptop.
. . .
Ferris took a deep breath, he decided on going back outside, not even bothering to see the landlord anymore.
If they didn’t want his rent, then so be it.
Oh... this is a tragedy indeed.
His heart felt cold all of a sudden.
At least there was someone who sympathized with him.
Ferris pressed his hands against his forehead before dragging them down to under his chin, then into a prayer.
However, perhaps there was another who sympathized for him as another familiar thing went inside his ears.
"Young man?" an old voice called out.
Ferris turned to the solemn tone. He instantly recognized the old man as the one he saved on his first day.
Ah... there was a dragon-level threat alarm back then, was there? Ferris remembered the old man.
A Former C-Class Hero, Rank 94: Mediman.
It felt that since his return here, Ferris experienced a lot of familiar people he had already met before.
