SSS-Knight in a Hero World-Chapter 121: Once again thinking
Upon accepting the grace of Prin’s wallet, Ferris did not attempt to be frugal this time around and opted for a more expensive place to fill his stomach.
And according to Ferris’ idea of expensive, this meant a restaurant that wasn’t owned by a continent-wide fast food chain, but those family-owned ones.
Since they lacked transportation, the whole act of finding the restaurant took a bit too much of their time.
Nevertheless, Ferris had not once opened his phone a second time so that he could focus on himself more and formulate his agenda for the day.
First off was the result of his request to take on the bodyguarding commission, which would be done later after his meal.
After that was to go to Prin’s house located by the countryside of City 17.
But it was also possible for him to take a detour and buy a weapon, "legally". That way, Ferris could finally act as a proper knight and openly carry his weapon around.
Otherwise, his hero name would have been useless.
But I really don’t want to hassle Magpie, she’s been waiting for me for so damn long! Ferris thought bitterly, before deciding on making the trip to Prin’s home a priority.
He wasn’t in a hurry after all, even if his request for the bodyguarding commission was accepted, it wouldn’t happen immediately, it would take at most a day or two to prepare and organize the trip to the mysterious facility.
Amidst his quiet thoughts, the two finally settled down inside a cozy restaurant beside a park.
This was his first time here, and also his first time dining in such a restaurant in this life.
Is this what they call the upper-class life? Ferris raised his chin up to observe the relatively empty streets.
He was wrong.
Ferris didn’t hold back on the ordering, he wanted to use Prin’s grace to its maximum and so, he reclined on his seat to read through the pages of delicacies he may pick.
But of course, just beside his menu was Magpie staring at him with an expressionless gaze, then Ferris noticed that she hadn’t picked up the menu in front of her. "Are you not going to eat?" he tilted his head to the side of his own menu.
As always, Magpie took her time to think about how she would reply.
After a few seconds, she finally opened her mouth and said, "I do not know what to select."
She can’t pick for herself... and she didn’t state that she couldn’t eat!
Ever since he met her, Ferris had been wondering how Magpie, who was an artificial being, fed herself or rather, energized herself to continue functioning.
He even thought of a charger that plugs into her body physically and his mind wandered back then on where it would be plugged in until he realized that wireless technologies existed, ceasing his previous thought in the process.
But now, he knew that she could actually eat!
Does she have taste buds? And...
Where does "it" go out?
. . .
Ferris shook his head in his imagination. You’re too old to be wondering about nonsense. he reminded himself before helping Magpie with her dilemma. "I’ll order for you then, if you don’t mind."
"I do not mind."
For himself, he chose a rather heavy breakfast that was nearly for three people. For Magpie, he didn’t hold back on the amount as he selected various dishes, rich, creamy, sweet, sour, savory, nearly everything that stimulates the tongue differently, he picked without hesitation.
I’m sure Magpie has some sort of advanced stomach to digest organic materials, and even if she has...
I’ll take it out as leftovers for myself. he thought.
Yes, I’ll take it out to prevent food waste.
I’m selecting this amount for Magpie, so she could experience the many tastes of food, it’s for her sake. Ferris deluded himself, but he knew very well what he was scheming.
After the selection, Ferris placed the order to dine in.
While waiting for the food, Ferris settled his phone on the table and started meditating in silence.
He couldn’t help but remind himself of what Mediman said, that his body wasn’t at its prime state or maximum state.
He checked his essence, to him it was normal and the amount within him was at its maximum.
Could he be referring to my maximization?
Maximizing my body to cope with the new essence, and maximizing the essence itself, those were the two key aspects of adjusting to the new layer.
Of course, there was the unique layer ability that needed mastering, but he already knew how it works, and he didn’t need to focus on maximizing it, as the two aspects of adjusting to the new layer passively increased the control and effects of his unique ability.
I can store about a large bag’s worth of things within my domain, and the increase of its quality isn’t that much at my 8th layer.
It’s rather gimmicky... I’m only looking forward to my next unique ability where I can expand my domain to parts of my body.
Next ability...
Ferris ceased his meditation as he focused his thoughts.
New ability? Maybe Mediman detected a new ability I obtained at the 8th layer?
That’s far-fetched and even if that man is right, I’d have no idea what this ability is.
After a while of analyzing his body and essence, he sighed coldly.
A knight can only dream.
Ferris resumed his meditation, thanks to that, he felt the time around him move faster and he was suddenly surprised by the great feast laid out before him.
Goodness gracious! Ferris almost screamed.
A single pitcher might not be enough.
Ferris sat there dumbfounded, but at the same time, he didn’t want to pick up his fork yet and start devouring everything like a beast.
This wasn’t the expired food he ate outside in a remote town, this was a public place and it required him to be tactful with his manners.
As he couldn’t wait any longer, he was about to say something to Magpie before he was caught off guard by her.
"Are we supposed to do a ceremony before a meal?"
Ferris was taken aback. Ceremony?
Magpie stared and blinked.
Ceremony??
Ferris also stared and blinked before realizing, ah, she must be curious about customs like those. I have no idea what to say though.
Back in my order, we’d just eat and drink and on special occasions, brawl like buffoons...
Obviously, I won’t punch Magpie in the gut! Ferris had a strange thought about her and Yaromech, but at least the later meant calming down a drunkard.
Ferris carefully observed her, and after seeing her expressionless face, he could feel a sense of curiosity within her opal-like iris.
"...Praying," he answered. "Some people pray before eating."
"Praying?" Magpie said before going silent as if she was searching up something within her head.
Suddenly, she asked, "Who’s God?"
God is a strange person who visits my dreams and confuses the hell out of me sometimes. Ferris silently lampooned but stopped quickly so he wouldn’t get a sudden visit tonight, though he wouldn’t actually mind that happening.
"Don’t think about it too hard, just do this."
Ferris clasped his hands together, Magpie followed shortly after.
"Pray to the people you know, wish them to be well." he softly said as he turned silent.
He prayed to his mother, he prayed to Tailor’s family, he prayed to Prin, he prayed to Magpie and the rest of the good people he knew in this world.
After that, he prayed for the otherworld, which took him a long time to finish.
In the background, he heard Magpie speaking his name and Prin’s as she wished them "Good bodily functionality."
That statement snapped him out of his trance about the otherworld.
Ferris finally picked up his utensils at the moment he woke up. "Let’s eat."
