SSS-RANK: Super Extraction System-Chapter 27: [ ] The Monarch’s Price
The roar of the titan shook the dust from the ceiling.
Kain, now a twenty-meter monstrosity of blood and bone, loomed over the throne room like a god of judgment. His crimson veins pulsed with magma-light, casting long, terrifying shadows across the cracked floor.
Leon lay on the steps of the dais, his body broken. His ribs were fractured, his energy reserves were critical, and his squad was gone.
He was alone.
"DO YOU SEE NOW?" Kain’s voice was no longer human. It was a tectonic rumble that vibrated in Leon’s teeth. "THIS IS POWER. THIS IS THE TRUE FACE OF THE NIGHT."
The giant raised a fist the size of a van.
Leon didn’t move. He couldn’t.
But his mind was racing.
[ SYSTEM ALERT ] 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
[ THREAT LEVEL: FATAL ]
[ SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 0.00% ]
[ SUGGESTION: FLEE ]
Flee where? Leon thought bitterly. There is no exit. There is no backup.
He looked at the hostages cowering in the corner. Iron, his Shadow Servant, had despawned. They were defenseless.
If he died, they died.
Leon closed his eyes.
He looked past the System. Past the skills. Past the mana.
He looked deep into the core of his being.
There, beneath the layers of shadow, burned a small, fragile flame.
His Life Force.
[ WARNING: HOST VITALITY CRITICAL ]
[ ATTEMPTING TO BURN LIFE FORCE FOR MANA? ]
[ Y / N ]
It was a forbidden technique. Burning life force wasn’t just exhausting; it shortened your lifespan. It ate away at your soul.
But it was the only fuel he had left.
"Yes," Leon whispered.
WHOOSH.
Pain exploded in his chest. It felt like he had swallowed a star. His veins turned black, visible under his skin. His eyes began to bleed, the crimson tears mixing with the violet glow of his power.
[ LIFE FORCE CONVERSION: ACTIVE ]
[ MANA: OVERCHARGE (200%) ]
[ DURATION: 1 MINUTE ]
One minute. That was all he had before his heart gave out.
Leon opened his eyes. They were no longer human. They were voids of pure, destructive intent.
Kain brought his fist down.
BOOM.
The impact pulverized the dais. Stone shrapnel flew like bullets.
But Leon wasn’t there.
[ SHADOW GLIDE: MAX OUTPUT ]
He was a blur. A phantom.
He didn’t run away. He ran up.
He sprinted up the giant’s arm, his boots finding purchase on the hardened blood scales.
Kain roared in confusion, swatting at his own arm with his other hand.
Leon jumped. He cleared the swipe by inches.
He landed on the giant’s shoulder.
He was face-to-face with the monster’s neck, a column of muscle thick as a redwood tree.
"HI," Leon screamed.
He didn’t use his daggers. They were too small.
He placed both hands on the giant’s neck.
[ VENOMOUS STRIKE: OVERCHARGE ]
[ SHADOW MANIFESTATION: DRILL ]
He poured every ounce of his borrowed life into the attack.
The shadows around him swirled, condensing into a massive, rotating drill of solid darkness. It hummed with a sound that made teeth ache.
He drove it into the neck.
VRRRRR-CRACK.
The drill tore through the scales. It bored into the flesh.
Kain shrieked, a sound that shattered the remaining windows high above.
Black, corrosive venom pumped into the wound, amplified by Leon’s life force. It didn’t just poison the blood; it rotted the mana itself.
Kain grabbed Leon. His massive hand wrapped around Leon’s entire body.
He squeezed.
Leon felt his armor buckle. He felt his ribs grind together.
"DIE, INSECT!" Kain bellowed.
He threw Leon.
Leon flew across the room. He smashed into the obsidian throne, shattering it.
He hit the floor and didn’t move.
[ HP: 5% ]
[ LIFE FORCE: CRITICAL ]
But Kain wasn’t celebrating.
The giant staggered. He clutched his neck. The black rot was spreading fast, turning his glowing red veins dark.
"What... have you... done?" Kain gasped.
His form destabilized. The blood armor cracked and fell away in chunks. He began to shrink.
Twenty meters. Ten meters. Two meters.
He collapsed onto the ruins of the dais, reverting to his humanoid form. He was writhing in agony, coughing up black sludge.
The venom was killing him.
Leon lay in the rubble of the throne. He couldn’t feel his legs.
Get up, he told himself. Finish it.
He dragged himself forward. Inch by inch.
Kain looked up. His eyes were wide with fear. The arrogance was gone.
"Stay back," the vampire wheezed. "You... you abomination."
Leon reached the dais. He pulled himself up.
He crawled over to the dying Marquis.
Kain tried to crawl away, but his limbs were paralyzed by the toxin.
Leon stopped over him. He looked down into the red eyes that had terrorized the city.
"Checkmate," Leon whispered.
He raised his dagger.
He drove it into Kain’s heart.
[ CRITICAL HIT ]
[ TARGET ELIMINATED ]
Kain gasped once, and then went still.
But it wasn’t over.
A thick, heavy shadow began to pool beneath the corpse. It was unlike anything Leon had ever seen. It was dense, ancient, and pulsating with a will of its own.
[ ROYAL SHADOW DETECTED ]
[ EMERGENCY PROTOCOL: LIFE-FOR-LIFE EXTRACTION ]
[ EXTRACT? Y / N ]
Leon looked at the prompt.
He was dying. He could feel his heart fluttering, weak and erratic. If he tried to extract a Royal Shadow now, the strain would likely kill him.
But if he didn’t... the power would be lost. And Kain might rise again as a spectre.
I started this, Leon thought. I finish it.
He placed his hand on the vampire’s chest.
"Extract."
The scream wasn’t audible. It was a psychic blast.
Kain’s soul fought back.
NO! YOU CANNOT HAVE ME! I AM ETERNAL!
The shadow ripped free from the body. It formed a terrifying, ghostly visage of the Marquis, jaws open to devour Leon.
It slammed into Leon’s mind.
[ WARNING: MENTAL DEFENSE FAILING ]
[ WARNING: SOUL CONSUMPTION IMMINENT ]
Leon gritted his teeth. Blood poured from his nose.
He held on. He poured the last drops of his life force into the extraction.
"You are mine," Leon hissed. "Serve me."
The struggle lasted an eternity. A battle of wills fought in the space between heartbeats.
And then... the vampire broke.
The shadow screamed one last time and shattered. It flowed into Leon’s hand, up his arm, and into his core.
[ EXTRACTION SUCCESSFUL ]
[ NEW SHADOW SERVANT ACQUIRED ]
[ SHADOW ESSENCE: +100 (MAX) ]
[ SYSTEM EVOLUTION INITIATED ]
The energy hit Leon like a tidal wave. It was too much.
His body convulsed.
Then, a memory flashed in his mind.
Not his memory. Kain’s.
A dark room. Candlelight. Kain, young and human, kneeling before a figure in the shadows.
"Drink," the figure said. Its voice was old. Ancient. "And become my son."
The figure stepped into the light. It wasn’t the Monarch. It was a vampire. The Progenitor.
Lord Malakor.
The memory shifted. The present day. Malakor sitting in a castle far away. He opened his eyes. He felt the death of his ’son’.
"Who dares?" Malakor whispered.
The connection snapped.
Leon gasped, his eyes rolling back in his head.
The darkness took him.
He fell sideways, collapsing onto the cold stone beside the dust of his enemy.
He wasn’t moving. He wasn’t breathing.
Iron, the Shadow Knight, flickered into existence one last time. He stood over his master, his sword lowered in a salute.
Then, he too dissolved into smoke.
Leon lay alone in the dark.
He had won. He had saved them.
But the price of the crown was high.
And as the light faded from his mind, Leon wondered if he had paid with his soul.
