Bei Sangyun made it abundantly clear to him that he didn’t stand a chance. He knew it too well; he had lost before the fight even began.
But why did it have to be Fei Chuan of all people?
He had been constantly compared to him in the past, and he never once won against Fei Chuan.
He thought Fei Chuan’s domineering reign had passed and ended. But here he was, losing to him again.
Jang Shin felt bitter and unwilling. Despite knowing it was unnecessary to pursue Fei Chuan, he still sought him out.
It was a petty move, but he wanted to unsettle Fei Chuan, hoping he wouldn’t succeed. It would be better if Bei Sangyun saw Fei Chuan’s ugly side, so Jang Shin aimed to expose him.
However, he didn’t anticipate Fei Chuan boldly admitting his flaws and even claiming that Bei Sangyun liked that aspect of him.
"You admitted it yourself. You’re using her to satisfy your ego. You don’t deserve her," Jang Shin asserted.
Fei Chuan’s gaze turned cold. "Did you come here just to say that? Do you think your words will matter? She rejected you, so you came to me. For what? To make yourself feel better?"
Fei Chuan advanced, his demeanor menacing. "I’m not inclined to entertain your grievances. Cry or vent elsewhere. Regardless of what you say, I won’t comply with your wishes."
Fei Chuan prepared to leave, but Jang Shin blocked his path. "You can’t even keep her. Your standing in the Fei family isn’t what it used to be. You’re no longer the exalted young master back then. How can you even help her? If you genuinely care for her, then stop playing games and leading her on."
Jang Shin continued to provoke Fei Chuan. Fei Chuan halted, meeting Jang Shin’s gaze expressionlessly.
Jang Shin thought he had struck a nerve, so he continued to provoke Fei Chuan, "If the Fei family learns that a member of the Lin family is pursuing you, what do you think will happen? Your family won’t support you, and I’ve heard that you and Fei Min don’t get along. When he returns and discovers this news, what do you think he’ll do? Do you believe you can protect her?"
Fei Chuan’s gaze turned dangerously cold.
Jang Shin felt a twinge of intimidation, yet excitement bubbled within him. If he couldn’t change Bei Sangyun’s mind, perhaps he could sway Fei Chuan’s—
"Nice try. But you’re mistaken on several accounts," Fei Chuan interjected, interrupting his thoughts. "First, I don’t need my family’s approval for my decisions. Second, I can handle Fei Min. And lastly, Bei Sangyun isn’t someone who needs my protection."
Fei Chuan smirked. "So what you fear won’t come to pass. But thank you for your concern." He patted Jang Shin’s shoulder as if genuinely appreciative of his worries.
Withdrawing his hand, Fei Chuan showed a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "As I said, don’t waste your time. I’ll let it slide this time, but if you try a stunt like this again, I won’t be as forgiving."
....
The winter season was coming to an end, and the cold weather gradually receded as spring approached.
Despite the milder temperatures, Bei Sangyun still donned Fei Chuan’s coat, idly kicking a small rock in front of her out of boredom.
She waited for Fei Chuan three blocks away from the school’s entrance, near the food stall they frequented.
Ever since Bei Sangyun obtained Fei Chuan’s permission to pursue him, she often brought him to this area after school, on her words, she wanted to ’treat’ him as a gesture of affection.
Bei Sangyun got a text message from Fei Chuan earlier that he would be delayed for a few minutes and she could go ahead without him.
Bei Sangyun chose to wait in their familiar spot rather than proceed without him.
She pondered what ’business’ Fei Chuan had dealt with before meeting her. He was not in any trouble, wasn’t he?
"What are you thinking about?"
The familiar voice snapped Bei Sangyun out of her thoughts, and her eyes brightened as she looked up at the person before her.
"I was thinking about you. Finished with your business?" she inquired.
Fei Chuan hummed lightly. "Mhm. Are you hungry?"
"I’ve been starving. Since you made me wait, it’s your treat," Bei Sangyun teased.
A light smile graced Fei Chuan’s lips. "Okay."
Bei Sangyun chuckled in response.
Fei Chuan glanced at her as they walked, his eyes softening unknowingly.
Suddenly, Jang Shin’s earlier words came to his mind. He found himself asking, "I heard I have an inflated ego and have been using you for my low self-esteem. What do you think about that?"
Although Fei Chuan confidently answered Jang Shin earlier, he still had some reservations. Would Bei Sangyun still like him if she heard this? What would she think of him?
"Who told you that? They’re absolutely right," Bei Sangyun replied nonchalantly.
Fei Chuan was left speechless by her casual response. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Did her reaction mean it was nothing, or was there something more to it? He couldn’t decipher anything from her reply.
Sensing his silence, Bei Sangyun chuckled. "Are you seriously concerned about that? I’ve known you at your worst. You were intolerant, picky, ungentlemanly, apathetic, and incredibly annoying when we were children. As an adult, you’ve become ten times more irritating."
Fei Chuan’s expression turned grim.
If he was so annoying to her, what did she even like about him? How had she come to like him?
"...It surely took me a lifetime to learn more than that," Bei Sangyun murmured. Then, she looked up at him with the sweetest smile Fei Chuan had ever seen.
"I know many of your flaws. And I don’t know when they became adorable to my eyes. I’m beginning to discover your good sides, and the more I find them, the more I like you. That beautiful process is what brings a smile to my face every day."
Fei Chuan gazed into her sincere eyes. Time seemed to stand still, and everything around them seemed to glow. Fei Chuan’s heart raced so intensely, that it felt as if it might burst.
Overwhelmed by her genuine and lovely confession, he found himself unable to speak.
