"—quite unique, isn’t it, Ms. Bei? Ms. Bei?"
A nudge on her shoulder snapped Bei Sangyun out of her daze. She instinctively turned toward the person who nudged her, breaking the eye contact in the process.
Oh no.
She wanted to look back again. Her eyes weren’t deceiving her—Fei Chuan had been looking at her, hadn’t he?
She was just about to turn when someone in the group caught her attention. "I saw something similar to the photo you showed us. Just earlier, actually."
Bei Sangyun quickly turned her focus to the speaker. "Are you sure? Where?"
"Well, I’m not completely sure it’s the exact same one. But I remember the design—it was unique and looked old, with chains wrapped around it..."
Bei Sangyun’s eyes lit up. "Where did you see it?"
"I sneaked down to the lower floors earlier to meet a friend. That’s where I saw it."
"Do you remember who had it?"
"He looked familiar, but I don’t know his name. He’s young—probably a young master from some family. But if you look around, you’ll spot him easily. That necklace stands out—it’s pretty odd-looking."
Bei Sangyun thanked the speaker, gave one last glance at Fei Chuan—who was no longer looking at her—and left in a hurry.
It wasn’t unusual for guests on the higher floors to be unfamiliar with those on the lower floors.
Although the guests on the lower floors were also wealthy and somewhat well-known, they couldn’t compare to the big shots gathered upstairs.
Bei Sangyun entered the elevator and pressed the button for the floor where the other venue was located.
Just as the elevator doors closed, Fei Chuan appeared in the hallway. An usher stood nearby. Fei Chuan glanced at the elevator panel and saw it stop two floors below.
"Did the young lady who just passed by take this elevator?" he asked.
The usher nodded politely. "Would you like a lift to the lower floors?"
"Yes, please."
Fei Chuan stepped into the next elevator, intent on following her. As for why she had gone to the lower floors, he had no idea. It was rare for anyone from the upper levels to head downstairs. If someone wanted to make connections, it was usually better to network on the higher floors.
When he arrived, the atmosphere was noticeably different. The upper floor had been elegant, ambient, and classical, while this level was loud, lively, and buzzing with energy. The crowd here was clearly younger and more liberal.
Fei Chuan looked around, scanning the crowd for any sign of Bei Sangyun.
"Oh! I know you—Fei Chuan, right?" a young woman suddenly stepped in his way. She was stunningly beautiful, but Fei Chuan didn’t even glance at her as he tried to walk past.
"Excuse me."
"Wait! You owe us a drink from last time. Remember?"
"I don’t. You must be mistaking me for someone else," Fei Chuan replied, attempting to move around her.
But the woman was persistent. She grabbed his arm, stopping him. "No way I’d mistake you for someone else—especially someone like you. Come join us at the table. Let’s pick up where we left off."
Fei Chuan frowned. "I’m busy right now. Let go."
"Oh, come on. You were so friendly with us last time, I thought we were having a good time. If it wasn’t for that crazy woman who suddenly threatened me and my friend, we would’ve had more fun."
Fei Chuan paused. He looked at the woman again but still didn’t recognize her. Yet... her story felt familiar.
"You remember now?" she continued. "We couldn’t get close to you again after that—"
Her words trailed off as her gaze shifted. "Oh. That’s her. What is she doing here? Is she your stalker or something?"
Fei Chuan turned in the direction she was looking and saw Bei Sangyun talking to another man.
Bei Sangyun. freewёbnoνel.com
He quickly pulled his arm away and left without another word.
"Hey! Where are you going?" the woman called after him.
Fei Chuan ignored her and headed toward Bei Sangyun.
His hurried steps gradually slowed as he neared. His heart pounded louder and louder, each beat thudding in his ears like a drum.
What should he say?
Should he start with an apology?
How should he apologize to show her he meant every word?
He watched as the man she was speaking with nodded, and Bei Sangyun followed him toward the private rooms.
Fei Chuan quickened his pace.
From a distance, he could hear the man’s loud laughter. The man leaned in, steadily closing the space between himself and Bei Sangyun.
Fei Chuan’s frown deepened. He moved faster.
The two stopped in front of one of the private rooms. The man opened the door and gestured for Bei Sangyun to follow him inside.
But Bei Sangyun didn’t move. She remained by the door.
As Fei Chuan neared he heard the man spoke.
"Come on," the man coaxed. "Let’s share a drink first. Then I’ll show you what you’re looking for."
Fei Chuan’s expression turned grim. He was about to interrupt when he heard Bei Sangyun respond sharply.
"If you really have what I’m looking for, I’m willing to offer a handsome reward. But if you’re just wasting my time, take my word—you’ll be too scared to step out of your room again."
The man chuckled. "No need to be so serious. It’s not like I have any bad intentions. I just wanted to invite you for a drink—" He reached out, about to touch her arm.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed his wrist.
"Then just show it to her," Fei Chuan said, his grip tightening. His face was grim. "If you truly mean no harm, there’s no reason to bring her all the way here."
Bei Sangyun’s eyes widened, looking at Fei Chuan.
She hadn’t noticed his presence until now. He had been on the upper floor earlier... Did he follow her?
The man winced, clearly in pain. "Alright, alright! Let me go!"
Fei Chuan finally released him, his jaw clenched. Those filthy hands were about to touch her.
The man rubbed his wrist, already turning red with a forming bruise. He clicked his tongue in irritation. "Forget it. I don’t feel like showing it anymore."
Bei Sangyun snapped out of her daze. Although she was startled by Fei Chuan’s sudden appearance and the unexpected protectiveness he showed—and although she wanted to ask him why he was here, why he followed her, why he was interfering, why he suddenly seemed to care—she set it all aside for now.
She calmed down her fast beating hear and tried to focus on what was at front.
This matter at hand took priority.
She stepped forward. "You said you’d show it to me."
"That was on the condition you’d share a drink," the man said, casting an impatient glance at Fei Chuan. "But clearly, you don’t need anyone offering you one now."
Bei Sangyun pursed her lips. She wasn’t someone who would easily follow a stranger, however she was desperate. She had followed him all the way here just to catch a glimpse and confirm if it was the necklace she was looking for.
She had been patient enough to come this far, and now this man was backing off, testing the last of her patience.
Bei Sangyun took a deep breath and tried again. "Aren’t you interested in the reward? I might not be familiar to you, but I assure you, I can offer enough money or compensation for your time."
"I don’t need money."
"Then what do you need?" Bei Sangyun asked, her expression turning solemn. If this man made things difficult, she would have to force her way through.
The man glanced at Fei Chuan behind her and smirked. "I already told you. If you come inside and share a drink with me, I might change my mind."
Fei Chuan frowned and glanced at Bei Sangyun. He wanted to step in. It didn’t matter what the man wanted—there had to be other ways for her to get what she came for.
Though he didn’t know what it was about, he could offer his help.
Bei Sangyun frowned as well. She had come here prepared—but doing this in front of Fei Chuan... she was starting to have second thoughts.
She glanced at him. Fei Chuan showed no sign of leaving.
Just as she was contemplating whether she should send someone to rob the man later, he added, "If you don’t want to, never mind."
Bei Sangyun sighed. "Fine. Just one glass."
The man smiled. "Of course."
Fei Chuan’s expression darkened. He stepped in before they entered the room. "I should join too."
Both of them turned to him.
Bei Sangyun was stunned once again.
Fei Chuan met her gaze, then looked at the man. "Isn’t it more fun to have more people to share a drink?"
The man looked Fei Chuan up and down. His eyes showing malice. He grinned. "Sure, why not."
