Starting With SSS-rank: I Get A New Skill Every Livestream-Chapter 48: Flirting
So now... Kyle was sharing a seat with his ex-girlfriend.
How she had managed to pull this off was still beyond him, but he knew one thing for certain, Amanda’s eyesight was perfectly fine. She could spot a pebble across a river without squinting and read a book up close without the slightest strain.
So yes, she had lied and somehow convinced the teacher to let her sit near the front. Not even the first row, but the third one, exactly where Kyle was seated.
Kyle couldn’t help but wonder if she had actually asked her clan for help over something so trivial. He hoped not.
"I hope we can get along," she said as she settled beside him.
By now, Kyle understood that the misunderstanding between them had been born from the burden Amanda carried as a Nightwalker.
But Amanda knew something else, Kyle had no idea about the aether world, and yet she was trying so hard to stay close to him.
He knew she couldn’t tell him the real reason behind their separation, and yet she didn’t want to let him go. She was desperate to be with him again. That was why, even after what he had said yesterday, after how badly he had treated her, she was still here, smiling so brightly, just happy to share a desk with him.
The thought weighed heavily on his chest. He looked down and bit his lower lip.
"Umm..." she spoke hesitantly, "Please don’t be upset... I won’t disturb you, I promise."
Her smile faded, her eyes turning glossy.
Kyle let out a quiet sigh and said nothing.
’System... can you check how many people are staring at us? And what about Ethan?’
[Inspecting...]
[Seventeen individuals are glancing in your direction. As for Ethan, he has been staring at you continuously. If the host wishes, God’s Eye can further analyze the target’s current emotions.]
’No need,’ Kyle snickered inwardly. He didn’t need the system to tell him that the blond bitch was furious.
Kyle had already noticed Ethan’s plan. He had intended to sit with Amanda today by asking Hannah to switch with Clara. But Amanda had acted two steps ahead, changing her seat on her own to sit at the front.
Soon, the class began. The teacher started her lecture on historical figures, mentioning that the upcoming trip would focus on monuments, museums, and related sites.
Kyle began taking notes. The semester exams were close, and he had been slacking off far too much.
Just then, the system notified him,
[Another person is staring at the host quite intently.]
[And that person is very close to the host.]
Kyle let out a quiet sigh and glanced at his neighbor. Just as the system had said, Amanda was looking at him, her hand absentmindedly drawing circles on the paper.
He shook his head and scribbled a few words on the last page of his notebook before sliding it toward her.
Amanda was caught off guard. She lowered her gaze and read what he had written.
[Graduating from uni is no longer the goal?]
Her face warmed instantly. Had he caught her staring? She thought she had been discreet.
And the way he had written it, instead of glaring at her, made her heart skip a beat.
It reminded her of the old days, when they used to exchange small notes like this, teasing each other.
Unable to stop herself, she wrote something in return and hesitantly slid the notebook back to him, half-expecting him to ignore it or even complain to the teacher.
But he read it.
[I have this lecture covered. Don’t worry.]
The moment he saw it, she regretted those last two words. It sounded as if she assumed he would worry about her.
Now that he had read it, a mild panic set in as she waited for his response.
Soon, Kyle slid the notebook back.
[I am not concerned about you, but myself. So stop staring, or I might not be able to focus.]
Disbelief and a quiet joy filled her chest, and she couldn’t stop herself from smiling.
She didn’t know what had changed or why he wasn’t reacting negatively to her anymore, but she didn’t want it to stop.
Even if this was all just a dream, if she were still in her pajamas, lying on her bed and imagining this entire moment, she wanted it to last, even if only for a few weeks.
She wanted to write more, even knowing she might ruin the moment. But when she saw him focusing on the lecture again, she held herself back.
She knew Kyle took his studies seriously, even more so after everything he had gone through recently.
Her chest felt heavy whenever she thought about the time his company had shut down and how devastated he had been.
It had been his first big step, starting something of his own. It wasn’t even related to his major, but he believed that gaining experience mattered more. Amanda had supported him back then, but things hadn’t turned out as they had hoped.
Since then, Kyle’s confidence had taken a hit.
But now, it seemed like he was finally finding his footing again, slowly moving toward a better future.
So disturbing him any further would be unfair.
Classes continued like usual however, Amanda was quite happy today.
In between the lectures, she exchanged just a few words with Kyle, like when she asked if he wanted a spare pen, or when she asked her for a spare eraser.
It was fun. It was almost like they had returned to the days when they were close but not dating. Yes, it was slightly disheartening that things have grown to the point she had to think twice before speaking them. But at least, this was better than being ignored or hated by the man.
As the fourth lecture drew to an end, and everyone prepared to leave, Amanda suddenly saw Kyle extending his notebook towards her.
Surprised, she looked down. And the moment she saw the words written there, her mind went blank,
[Meet me near the locker room on the third floor. Come alone and don’t tell anyone you are meeting me.]
