The morning sun cast a golden glow over the basketball court as Adrian stood, arms crossed, watching Elaine dribble the ball with surprising ease. He had to admit, she was a fast learner. Her movements were fluid, her grip on the ball confident, and her focus unwavering. It was as if she had been playing for years, yet he knew she was new to this.
Around them, a small crowd had gathered—mostly girls who had, at some point, tried to gain Adrian's attention under the pretense of learning basketball. Yet none had succeeded. Now, they watched Elaine with envy, whispering among themselves. Why did she get his attention? Why was he actually teaching her when he had brushed off everyone else?
And they weren't wrong—Adrian himself had wondered if she was using this as some kind of tactic, just like the others. He had even intentionally shown up late that morning, expecting her to be gone out of frustration. But to his surprise, instead of leaving, Elaine had scolded him for his tardiness.
"You're late," she had said firmly, arms crossed, eyes narrowed. "If you don't take this seriously, why agree in the first place?"
That was when Adrian knew she was different. Unlike the others, she wasn't here to flirt or waste his time. She was serious about learning, and she never once tried to use charm to gain his favor.
He watched her now, noting her determination. She was naturally talented, but more than that, she was committed. It was a rare thing to see, and although he still held some suspicion that she might eventually show her true colors, he found himself relieved—for now, at least, she was proving him wrong.

Later that day, in the cafeteria, Mary and Ryan sat chatting animatedly when Elaine showed up sometime later. Mary smirked and teased her, "So, how's your basketball teacher?"
Elaine rolled her eyes and brushed off the comment. "I'm serious about learning basketball. Nothing else."
Meanwhile, Adrian entered the cafeteria and quickly noticed the lack of available seats. There were only two empty seats left—one next to a girl who looked like she might faint if he sat beside her, and another near a girl who gave off an unsettlingly creepy vibe. Neither option appealed to him, and he decided to leave rather than deal with unnecessary disturbances.
Just as he turned to go, Elaine's voice rang out. "Adrian, sit here."
The entire cafeteria fell into silence. All eyes turned toward them, as if they were witnessing something fascinating unfold.
Adrian paused for a moment, then, without a word, walked towards her table and took the seat next to her. The murmurs resumed, hushed yet excited, as people watched the two of them with curiosity.
As they settled in, Mary, always eager to break the silence, grinned. "So, let's introduce ourselves properly. I'm Mary, and this sulking one here is Ryan."
Adrian barely looked up from his seat. "Adrian," he said flatly before pulling out a business book and flipping it open, immersing himself in its pages.
Elaine, without glancing at anyone, simply ate her lunch in silence. The once lively table quickly fell into an awkward stillness, as if the air had been sucked out of the conversation. No one quite knew what to say next.
