Chapter 37: Love declaration

Elaine lay in bed, wrapped in a blanket, her head resting against the pillow as she fought off the dizziness. Her body felt weak, exhaustion weighing her down.

Adrian sat on the edge of the bed, carefully placing a damp cloth on her forehead. His usual cold demeanor softened with concern.

"You need to rest," he said firmly, adjusting the covers around her.

Mary sat cross-legged on the floor, munching on a snack. "Yeah, Elaine. You've been pushing yourself too much lately. Maybe your body is just forcing you to take a break."

Ryan leaned against the wall with his arms crossed. "Or maybe it's emotional stress. You've been through a lot, you know."

Elaine sighed, closing her eyes for a moment before opening them again. "I'm fine. It's just a little fever."

Adrian scoffed. "You call this little?" He gestured toward the medicine and warm soup he had brought. "Eat, then sleep. No arguments."

Elaine gave him a small smile, touched by his care. "You sound like a mother."

Mary and Ryan chuckled, and even Adrian's lips twitched in amusement.

As the night deepened, the quiet hum of their voices filled the room. Despite feeling weak, Elaine found comfort in the presence of the people who cared about her.

That night her mobile went off . Elaine stared at the phone screen, Alex's name glowing in the dim room. Her fingers hovered over the decline button, her heart twisting. What did he want now? He was engaged. He had made his choice.

She let the call ring out, but a few seconds later, her phone vibrated again.

She sighed, slipping out of bed carefully so she wouldn't wake Mary, who was curled up beside her. Mary had insisted on staying over because Elaine was sick. She didn't know how she got so lucky to have people like this in her life.

Steeling herself, she grabbed a sweater and stepped outside into the cold night. If Alex wanted to talk, this would be the last time.

Alex standing infront of his car. Elaine stopped a few steps away from him, crossing her arms. "Are you out of your mind?" she asked, her voice laced with disbelief.

Alex didn't flinch. He simply opened the car door and looked at her. "Get in, Elaine."

She let out a sharp laugh. "You don't ask how I am, you don't say a word for days, and now you show up in the middle of the night telling me to get in your car? What is wrong with you?"

His jaw tightened, his eyes dark and unreadable. "Just get in, Elaine."

She shook her head. "No. Not until you tell me why."

Alex let out a heavy breath, running a hand through his hair. "Because if you don't, I will do it in my way and you won't that "

Elaine's heart skipped a beat. There was something in his voice—something raw, desperate.

Elaine huffed and sat stiffly in the passenger seat, arms crossed, eyes burning into Alex's profile. "Where are you taking me?" she asked again, but he remained silent, his grip tightening on the steering wheel.

The car finally came to a stop near a quiet park, one she recognized—it was near his office. But unlike before, there was no one around, just the dim glow of streetlights and the distant hum of the city.

Alex turned to her then, his gaze scanning her face. His brows furrowed as he took in her pale complexion, the way her lips were dry and cracked. Without thinking, he reached out, his fingers gently cupping her face. "Elaine... are you okay?" His voice was softer now, concerned.

Elaine's eyes widened at the sudden touch before she pushed his hand away, stepping back. "Are you out of your mind?" she snapped, her voice shaking with anger. "You don't get to touch me ,you were the one who decided to put distance between us. You made your choice, Alex. So what are we doing here now?"

Alex exhaled, his hands clenching at his sides before he finally spoke. "I don't know, Elaine," he admitted, his voice raw. "I thought I could do it. I thought I could let you go. But it turns out... I can't. Every time I see you with him, it eats me up inside. And now, standing here, I just—" He shook his head. "How am I supposed to marry someone else when my heart has never stopped wanting you?

Elaine let out a shaky breath, her heart twisting at his words. She had spent so long trying to move on, convincing herself that he had made his choice, that she had no place in his life anymore. And yet, here he was, looking at her like she was the only thing that mattered.

Elaine swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay firm. "Alex... you made your choice," she said, her voice quieter this time. "You don't get to say this now. Not after everything."

"I know," he whispered, his jaw tightening. "And I regret it every single day."

Elaine swallowed, her heart pounding. She wanted to believe him, but could she?

Alex stepped closer, his eyes searching hers desperately. His voice was low, filled with determination.

"Elaine, I will do something—I will break this marriage," he said, his breath uneven. "I can't live without you. How am I supposed to when my heart is slipping away? I will find a way. I will fix this for us."

Elaine let out a bitter laugh, stepping back. Her eyes burned as she looked at him. "And what about me, Alex?" she asked, her voice breaking. "What about society? People will point fingers at me. They will make me the culprit. You don't understand—everything about this is wrong. You can't break it now."

Alex clenched his fists. "I don't care about them. I care about you."

"But they won't care about me," Elaine snapped. "And what you're doing now—it's cheating, Alex. You're making a full circle back to what my mother did. You're pushing me toward the same fate she had to endure."

Alex's expression faltered, guilt washing over him. He had never thought of it that way.

Alex took a deep breath, his hands trembling as he reached for hers. "You don't have to worry, Elaine. Just trust me," he pleaded. "I will make everything right. No one will point fingers at you. No one will blame you. I'll make sure of it." His eyes searched hers desperately, looking for the trust he once had. "Please... be with me, Elaine. We've both wasted enough time."

Elaine's heart pounded against her chest. Everything in her wanted to believe him, to hold onto the love she had buried deep inside. But reality crashed into her like a wave. Even if Alex and Olivia didn't love each other, even if this engagement was nothing but duty—it was still cheating.

She clenched her fists, her voice barely above a whisper. "Alex... this is wrong."

His jaw tightened, pain flickering in his eyes. "Why does it have to be wrong if we love each other?"

Elaine shook her head. "Because love isn't the only thing that matters."

A lump formed in her throat. She had spent her whole life watching her mother suffer, enduring whispers, judgment, and loneliness. She refused to walk the same path. She had already endured enough.

Alex looked at her eyes, his grip firm yet gentle on her hands. "No, Elaine. There is no cheating," he insisted, his voice filled with desperation. "We love each other. And with Olivia... there was never love. She still has a boyfriend behind my back. This marriage is doomed from the start—it's just a show for the public. I will do anything to break it. Just give me one month, and everything will come under my control."

Elaine stared at him, her mind in turmoil. She knew what he was saying made sense, but that didn't erase the weight of guilt pressing on her chest. "Alex..." she hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper. "Whatever we're doing... it's wrong."

Alex cupped her face gently, forcing her to look into his pleading eyes. "Then why does it feel right?"

Her breath hitched. She wanted to deny it, to push him away, to remind herself of the boundaries she had set. But deep down, she knew—she had never stopped loving him. And maybe, just maybe, she never would.
