Chapter 46: Elaine's pain

Elaine rushed out of the hotel, her vision blurred with tears. She didn't know where she was going—only that she needed to escape.

The sky darkened as if mourning with her, and soon, the rain began to fall. First in soft drops, then harder, soaking through her clothes, chilling her to the bone. She barely felt it. Her heart ached too much to care.

Her steps were unsteady as she wandered aimlessly down the empty street. Every breath felt like a struggle, every sob a fresh wound.

This must be my punishment.

The words played over and over in her mind, like a cruel mantra. For trusting him. For believing in love.

Her phone buzzed in her trembling hand. She almost didn't answer, but when she saw Adrian's name, something in her reached for the familiarity, the comfort.

She pressed the phone to her ear. "H-Hello?"

"Elaine?" Adrian's voice was sharp with concern. "Where are you?"

She hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper. "I... I don't know. Somewhere near the hotel. Adrian... please, come get me."

"I'm on my way. Just stay where you are."

The call ended, and Elaine stood there, rain streaming down her face, mixing with the silent tears that refused to stop. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to hold herself together, but she was unraveling.

The rain poured mercilessly, drenching the empty streets, blending with the silent sorrow that weighed on Elaine's heart. She sat on the cold pavement, knees drawn to her chest, her face wet—not just from the rain, but from the tears she couldn't stop.

Everything felt heavy. Her body, her heart, her regrets. The pain clawed at her chest, and she couldn't move, couldn't breathe, as if the storm outside mirrored the storm inside her.

Then suddenly, the rain stopped falling on her.

Elaine looked up, blinking against the droplets clinging to her lashes. An umbrella hovered over her, shielding her from the downpour. And then—him.

Adrian.

He stood there, eyes searching hers with an intensity that made her throat tighten. He said nothing, but his presence alone sent another wave of emotion crashing over her.

Before she could find her voice, before she could ask please take her away, he pulled her up.

And then he hugged her

Elaine shuddered, her fingers clutching the fabric of his shirt. The warmth of his embrace was the only thing keeping her from falling apart completely.

He guided her into the car, his hands steady even when everything in her world felt unsteady. The moment she sat down, the heater turned on, but Elaine barely felt it. Her mind was elsewhere, stuck in the past few hours, in the images she couldn't erase.

She let out a shaky breath, trying to calm herself, but the words slipped out again.

"This must be my punishment..."

Adrian froze. His grip on the steering wheel tightened.

Elaine wasn't even looking at him—her gaze was distant, her expression hollow.

"...For loving the person who supposed to be not mine," she whispered. "For believing in something that was never real."

Her hands clenched into fists, her nails digging into her palms.

"This must be my punishment."

Adrian turned to her, his eyes dark with something unreadable.

"Elaine," he said, his voice low.

But she wasn't listening. The words kept tumbling out, as if she was trying to convince herself.

"This must be my punishment—"

"No."

Adrian reached for her, cupped her face, and kissed her.

Not out of passion. Not out of love.

But to stop her from saying another word.

A single tear slipped down his cheek.

He was crying—for her.

For everything she was going through.

For the pain she didn't deserve.

"Stop." His voice was gentle but commanding. "Don't say that."

Elaine blinked, as if waking up from a trance.

His hands trembled as he pulled away, his gaze locked onto hers. He wanted to tell her it wasn't her fault. That she shouldn't blame herself. That she should never think of this as a punishment.

But not now. Not like this.

Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting her out of here.

He swallowed hard, then started the car.

Alex would pay for this.

But first—he had to take care of Elaine.

____

Alex stood in the middle of the road, his heart pounding wildly in his chest. The rain poured down, drenching him, but he barely felt it. His fingers tightened around his phone as he dialed her number again—no answer.

"Elaine, pick up," he muttered under his breath, running a frustrated hand through his soaked hair.

His eyes darted around the empty streets, searching for any sign of her. Desperation clawed at his throat. Where was she?

He took a shaky breath, trying to think. She must be close. She couldn't have gone far.

Alex's hands curled into fists. He needed to find her—to explain. She needed to hear the truth from him, not from the twisted version Olivia had fed her.

But after minutes of frantic searching and failing to find her, something inside him snapped.

With fury bubbling beneath his skin, he turned on his heel and stormed back to the hotel.

He barely registered anything as he reached the door of the room. His rage boiled over. Bang! He kicked the door open, the force rattling the walls.

Inside, Olivia sat comfortably on the couch, now dressed in a silk robe, leisurely sipping a glass of wine. She didn't even flinch at his violent entrance. Instead, she looked up at him with a smirk.

"Well, well," she mused, swirling the wine in her glass. "You look like a man who just lost something important."

Alex's vision blurred with red.

Without a word, he lunged at her, his hand wrapping around her throat.

Olivia gasped, but even as his grip tightened, her smirk remained. She stared at him, fearless, amused even, as if she had expected this.

Alex's fingers flexed, pressing harder. His breaths came in sharp, angry bursts.

"You ruined everything," he growled.

Olivia let out a weak chuckle, her nails digging into his wrist. "Did I?" she rasped.

Alex's jaw clenched. He could end it. Right here. Right now.

But then Olivia smiled, even with her air supply cut off. "Do you really think I would let you get away with what you were doing behind my back?" she choked out, eyes gleaming with cruel satisfaction.

Alex's grip faltered.

Olivia coughed, sucking in a breath as he pulled back slightly, but her smug expression never wavered.

She straightened her robe, rubbing her throat. "Face it, Alex. You thought you could outplay me, but you forgot who you're dealing with."

Alex clenched his fists, his whole body shaking with fury. "You're going to regret this," he said, his voice ice-cold. "And I will make sure of it ".

Olivia tilted her head, a slow, taunting smirk spreading across her lips. "We'll see, won't we?"

Without another word, Alex grabbed his shirt, yanked it on, and stormed out of the room.

His only thought now—Elaine.
