"Who is this?"

"My boyfriend."

Maddison's answer was just as short as the question, and the woman took a drink from her glass with a scowl. Her eyes trailed over Azrael's body as she examined him for a while before she turned and began to walk away.

"Ensure he doesn't steal anything. Lord knows the demonic creatures you surround yourself with outside of our supervision."

Maddison's hand tightened around Azrael's, and she bowed her head and answered.

"Yes, mother—"

"Don't call me that!"

Smash!

The woman suddenly shouted and threw her glass cup to the ground, breaking it to pieces, and Maddison jumped in fright!

The woman glared at Maddison with her teeth bared before she spoke in irritation.

"Take yourself out of my sight this moment, and if I ever hear that word from your mouth—"

The woman stopped herself as her eyes trailed towards Azrael for a moment. She then took in a breath and spoke to a maid that was already approaching them.

"Clean this up and get me another glass. My mood is soured and my night is ruined."

Maddison's mother walked away from them, and Azrael saw Maddison's eyes harden into a deep glare before she started to lead him up the stairs.

Azrael didn't know what to make of Maddison's family.

From the little interaction they had with the two members he had met so far, it was obvious that Maddison didn't downplay her relationship with them and the way they viewed her.

They hated everything about her down to her very core.

Honestly, Azrael didn't know if he could remain with a family like this if he was in Maddison's shoes.

Not only would living such a solitary existence in a house this large drive him insane, but he would probably end up being kicked out for rebelling against everything they did to him.

Compared to him, Maddison might as well be the most tolerant person in the world.

There were no more servants as they walked down a hallway, and Maddison led Azrael to an elaborate white door at the end of the hall.

She pushed it open, and Azrael felt his brow raise.

The room was dark, with only a small amount of moonlight filtering through the black curtains to provide enough light for them to move around.

But even without using his [Eye of Nyx], his natural constitution as a demigod gave Azrael eyesight that was far above what regular humans had, so he could see just fine.

The room was large, with a queen-sized bed pushed against the wall on one side. There was a dresser beside the bed with a lantern on it, and opposite that bed, there was a table with a laptop on it and a chair beside it.

Most of the room was bare, and if not for a few stuffed toys and clothes thrown about, Azrael would think that no one stayed there.

There were no pictures on the wall and no bright colors in the room.

It looked more like an abandoned room in a haunted house than the room of a sixteen-year-old girl.

Maddison clicked the door shut behind her before she resumed picking her clothes and stuffed animals off the ground. She rolled them up and tossed them into a hamper at the side, and Azrael just stood with his hands in his pockets and watched her.

When she was done, she stood opposite him with her head bowed and a sad look on her face.

Azrael scratched the back of his head and finally wondered what he was doing in the room.

He never intended to come this far with her in the first place. Azrael just thought he would accompany her until she met with her parents before leaving.

It was just that his encounter with Maddison's mother left him too stunned to leave. Seeing the sort of life she lived made it harder for him to just abandon her after she asked him for help.

But now that she was back in her room… he had to leave.

"Look—"

"I'm sorry… about my mum."

Azrael was about to speak, but Maddison spoke over him as she hugged her arms around her body. She was still not looking at him, but the light shining from the curtains allowed Azrael to see her wet eyes.

Azrael sighed internally.

He didn't know how to handle emotional girls, so he just said:

"It's fine. I'm not one to talk about parents, but I'm not sure that woman qualifies to be a mother with the way she acted."

Maddison turned to glance at Azrael in surprise, and Azrael wondered if she took offense to what he said.

But then, Maddison laughed softly while cleaning her eyes, and Azrael smiled when she spoke.

"No, she doesn't qualify to be a mother at all. You're right."

Azrael ran a hand through his hair again.

Most of the burns on his body were already healed, so he was feeling a lot better now, and he decided that he really had to get back before it got too late.

"Well, since you're feeling better, I should get back. Scar's going to throw us into hell tomorrow – his words, not mine – so I need to sleep."

Azrael turned to leave, but Maddison quickly spoke.

"W-Wait!"

Maddison reached out and grabbed Azrael by the arm, and Azrael turned around to see her staring at him with wide, desperate eyes.

Azrael's eyes narrowed in confusion, and he turned to face her fully.

"What is it?"

Maddison's words were caught in her throat. She tried to speak, but it felt like her entire body was disobeying her commands, and she couldn't even put strength into her lungs.

She swallowed as her eyes trailed down Azrael's face, to his lips, and then finally down to his chest as a blush rose on her cheeks.

Maddison already knew what she wanted to do. She still remembered the dance they had at the party and how it had been cut short abruptly.

She wanted to finish that dance, but she could feel her confidence wavering.

Would Azrael stop her again like last time?

Did he even want her?

These questions threatened to kill her on the inside, and she took a step away from Azrael as her confidence died a brutal death. But she was surprised when Azrael took her by the shoulder and leaned down to join their lips.

It was like the world vanished.

A white high-pitched noise whined in Maddison's ear as she felt Azrael's lips on her own. Her eyes widened to astronomical degrees, and her entire body froze rigid like a rock!

Azrael pressed himself forward into Maddison's chest and wrapped a hand around her back to pull her closer. His other hand traveled up her back, into her dark hair, and Maddison suddenly felt the world rush back into existence as she realized this was really happening.

Azrael was kissing her.

Maddison's body relaxed into his arms as her eyes closed gently. Her hands went up to Azrael's head, and her fingers entangled themselves in his hair, pressing him tighter against her lips as she tried to melt her body into his own.

Maddison wanted to feel all of him, and she wanted him to take all of her.

Azrael's hand on her back went down slightly and brushed against the top of her rear, and Maddison felt her entire body shiver as her lips parted in a gasp.

She arched her back, pressing her chest against Azrael's own as she hung off his neck desperately.

Maddison started to take steps back, hoping to drag him toward the bed, but Azrael pulled back from the kiss before things could go too far.

Maddison felt a part of her soul leave with him, and she groaned in despair.

They were both breathing heavily, and their eyes were locked in an intense stare.

Maddison glanced down at his lips and found herself mesmerized by how swollen they were.

She had done that to him and she wanted to do more.

Maddison started to pull Azrael down for another kiss.

"I need to go."

Azrael's words brought Maddison back to her senses, and she felt him slowly let go of her waist. Maddison suddenly realized that she was rushing things, and she blushed as she let go of him and stepped back.

Maddison's legs shook, and she almost fell to the ground from how numb they were, but she managed to catch herself before she wrapped her hands around her stomach to stop the butterflies.

Azrael gave Maddison a small smile when he was sure that she wasn't going to fall, and Maddison became certain at that moment that she loved him.

He looked at his watch.

"Can your driver take me back to the dorm?"

Maddison still didn't trust her voice, so she nodded, and Azrael thanked her.

"Make sure you get some rest. Goodnight, Maddison."

"G-Goodnight, Azrael."

Once he was gone, Maddison finally lost all the feeling in her legs and fell to her knees before sitting back on the floor. There was a large blush on her face that she couldn't get rid of no matter how hard she tried, and when she raised her hand to touch her lips tenderly, the memory of their kiss ran through her head on repeat like some sort of fever dream.

At that moment, Maddison forgot all about what she had done that night.

She forgot about what had been done to her, and she didn't care about what could happen in the future.

The only thing that was important was the fact that Azrael hadn't rejected her.

For the first time in her life, someone had accepted her for who she was, and she finally knew she wasn't alone.

Maddison put her hands on her face and cried.
