Chapter 60: Ding!

Ding! Ding! Ding!

The signal to start the fight!

The two of them tensed immediately, their bodies like strung wire. Jasper narrowed his eyes. He’d seen the way Riven moved earlier and he’d come up with a counter in his head. ’...as a Necromancer... he might be fast, but his body will be weak... I’ll get him that way!’

Just like before, Riven didn’t waste time, but he didn’t rush in either since he had no idea what his opponent’s power was. ’...I wish I could raise four undead...’

Instead, he used his Shape technique, and then his figure blurred as he ran forward. Wind whipped around the platform, snapping as the two of them used extreme speed.

Bam!

Riven didn’t hold back. With his two hands on his sword, he used his speed momentum and put his body against the sword in a swing.

The air whined as the sword slashed down, but Jasper was just as fast and he was in front of Riven, directly opposite his sword slash. He carried no weapon of his own, yet he faced a sword!

Crack!

Just as the sword was about to hit him, Jasper punched the sword strike. He punched it!

Riven had a moment to be surprised before his hand trembled with painful vibration and the shockwave of them colliding sent them apart.

Riven was thrown back, but he used his foot to press down on the platform so he didn’t leave it. His hands were almost numb and his shoulder painful. "What type of hand is that to be able to punch my sword like that?"

Riven knew he didn’t know any sophisticated techniques. What he learned from the village was nothing more than slashing and how to run very fast from animals that couldn’t be killed.

But things were different now. Although he still didn’t know any technique, what he knew was that he had power. His body was basically filled with energy from his Sigil. He could afford to use more aura than his peers in the same rank.

And he did, but Jasper had punched him right off. ’...I guess I shouldn’t underestimate him... he must be the rank one from the rank two set for something...’

Jasper rolled his shoulder. "What’s that? There’s nothing special about your sword strike and you still rush at me like that? You’re really a barbarian."

But inside his mind, Jasper was frowning because he still couldn’t feel his hand from the backlash of colliding with Riven. ’...just what type of strength does that village fool have?... things might get complicated... I better finish him off...’

Riven couldn’t read minds, so he didn’t know what Jasper was thinking. Instead, he straightened. "Maybe I really will have to go all out."

He used his Enhance technique and made his skin tougher and stronger, gaining a green luster. The painful vibration was gone from his hand and he was once again bursting with energy.

Jasper snorted. "That’s not going to help you. I must admit that your strength is more than I expected, but so what? You’re still a village baboon that’s wet behind the ears. You should have kept your mouth shut."

"You are the one running your mouth since though," Riven pointed out.

Jasper gritted his teeth as giggles spread out. His eyes flashed. "You’re dead."

And then he made his move. The space around him seemed to grow slightly distorted.

"Huh?" Riven blinked because suddenly Jasper was standing in front of him.

He was so surprised that he couldn’t even react in time! Jasper was simply too fast for Riven. It was as if he was there and then he was in front of him, as if he disappeared and appeared in a blink.

Riven’s head screamed. Energy burst through his body in scorching waves and all his muscles tensed as he began to leap away.

But of course, it was too late!

Jasper’s hand snapped out in a punch that seemed to make the air crack and bend. Riven saw the shadows of the punch just when it hit him solidly in the stomach.

Bam!

Pain flared from his stomach. His gut clenched so tight he felt as if he would vomit as he lurched backwards. He hit the ground and almost fell to his knees as he skidded back, his left hand gripped his stomach in surprise.

It was painful. Riven’s hand tightened on his sword. ’...how is that possible... he’s faster than me? I didn’t even see him move!... that’s insane! We are in the same rank!...’

His concentration broke and he began to hear the whispers from the students around him.

"He actually withstood Jasper’s punch!"

"Are you sure this guy isn’t stronger than he looks? A lot of us vomit blood when we were hit, but this guy wasn’t even sweating after taking one of his punches!"

Riven blinked. Indeed, he wasn’t sweating. In fact, he wasn’t feeling the pain again. The Undying Sigil had sent the Undying passive energy to his stomach. And since it had healing properties, it quickly washed away the pain and the effects.

"Oh? You’re still standing? I did use my best punch there, you know. I should be ashamed of myself. I won’t let that happen again!" Jasper said. His eyes were shining with a feverish light as if he’d finally seen the toy he had been waiting to get his hands on.

Riven straightened his back. ’...I’ll get him for sure... he can’t be... can’t be faster than me...’

This time, Riven was the one to directly attack. He flung himself forward into a leap like a bouncing monster. He cleared the space between them in a leap, his sword pulled back for a deadly swing.

But.

Riven suddenly found himself back on the ground with Jasper in front of him, already aiming a punch at his throat. His brain almost struggled to catch up, but fortunately, he had been preparing for something to happen, so he just jumped back.

At least he should be jumping back, but he simply remained where he was and Jasper almost punched his head right off if he hadn’t adjusted his sword as a block.

Riven grinned as he watched Jasper’s right hand suddenly change direction upward. At the same time, his left shoulder twitched and Riven was sent blasting back again, his chest almost crushed.
